Short answer: Spotify did test restricting in-app lyrics for some Free users in 2024, but that is not the company’s current general policy. As of August 2026, Spotify’s support guidance says ordinary online lyrics are available on both Free and Premium accounts, subject to song, market, device and rights-holder limitations. Premium’s clear lyric-specific advantage is access to lyrics while downloaded music is being played offline.
What the headline gets right—and wrong
“Spotify wants to put in-app lyrics behind a paywall” describes a real 2024 experiment, not a confirmed permanent worldwide rule. Some Free users saw a Premium upsell when they opened lyrics; reports also described accounts limited to roughly three lyric views per month. The rollout varied by account and market, and Spotify did not announce that every Free listener had lost lyrics.

Spotify later told TechCrunch that it was expanding lyrics availability for Free users globally. Its current support documentation lists lyrics for both Free and Premium tiers, while warning that availability can differ by country, device, song and licensing agreement.
The most accurate 2026 summary is therefore: Spotify tested a paywall for ordinary lyrics, then moved toward broader Free access while reserving offline lyrics for Premium.

What was actually restricted in 2024?
The 2024 change was not a single, universal switch. Accounts in the test could see a Premium upsell after selecting the lyrics panel. Some reports described a monthly allowance of approximately three songs. Because the evidence came from different users and markets, that number should be treated as a reported test condition—not a rule that applied to every Free account.
The experiment could also be affected by account, device, country or app version. A screenshot from a user in one market could show a genuine Spotify test without proving a global policy. Spotify’s own explanation is that features can vary with market conditions, devices and agreements with rights holders.

What Free and Premium users get in 2026
| Lyric function | Free | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary online lyrics | Generally available, where the song, device, market and rights allow | Generally available, with the same availability caveats |
| Lyric translations | Available worldwide where translations exist, according to Spotify’s February 2026 announcement | Available worldwide where translations exist |
| Mobile and tablet lyric previews | Rolling out globally | Rolling out globally |
| Lyrics saved for downloaded music and usable offline | Not included | Premium feature |
Spotify’s current lyrics support page says lyrics are available across Free and Premium tiers, but not for every song or device. The February 2026 product announcement makes the paid distinction clearer: offline lyrics accompany downloaded tracks for Premium users, while online lyrics, translations and mobile previews are offered to both tiers.

Why lyrics may be missing even when an account is not paywalled
A blank or missing lyrics panel is not proof that Spotify has put the account behind a subscription wall. Check these possibilities:

- Offline playback on a Free account. Downloaded music and offline lyrics are tied to Premium.
- A moved control. The lyrics card may appear below album artwork or a Canvas preview rather than where it appeared before.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Try several well-known tracks that normally have lyrics.
- Confirm that Spotify is online and that the account is not attempting offline playback.
- Update the Spotify app.
- Use the official Now Playing or desktop-player path for your device.
- Test another supported device to separate an account issue from a platform limitation.
- If lyrics are absent across otherwise supported songs, contact Spotify Support and include your country, device and app version.
Is Premium worth paying for if you only want lyrics?
For ordinary online lyric viewing, no: Spotify’s current documentation does not say that a Free listener must subscribe. Premium becomes relevant if you want lyrics available with downloaded music while offline, along with the broader Premium package.
| Free tier | Premium tier |
|---|---|
| Online lyrics, translations and supported mobile previews | Those features plus offline lyrics with downloaded tracks |
| Advertising and Free-plan playback limits remain | Ad-free listening, offline music and greater playback control |
| Availability can vary by market, device, song and experiment | More predictable access to enhanced and offline features, but plan terms still vary by market |
Spotify’s live Premium page should be checked for current prices and introductory offers. Prices, taxes, plans and promotions change by country and date, so an old dollar figure is not a reliable reason to subscribe.

Why would Spotify test a lyrics paywall?
This section is inference rather than a stated explanation from Spotify. Lyrics are a visible feature that many listeners open repeatedly, making them a plausible upgrade prompt. Spotify says lyrics are viewed hundreds of millions of times per day in its 2026 announcement, so restricting them could test whether a small inconvenience converts Free listeners to Premium without removing the music catalog itself.
Spotify’s 2025 annual filing describes Free as an ad-supported acquisition and engagement channel and includes lyrics among copyrighted elements in its licensing environment. That provides business context, but it does not prove that licensing costs caused the 2024 test or that the experiment succeeded or failed financially.
Is another universal lyrics paywall coming?
There is no verified public announcement in the available 2026 material of a new plan to make all ordinary lyrics Premium-only. The strongest current evidence points the other way: Spotify’s support page lists lyrics for Free and Premium, and its February 2026 announcement explicitly includes translations and mobile previews for both tiers.
Spotify can still test features by market, account or device, and its availability language leaves room for future changes. That possibility is not evidence of a current global paywall.
Alternatives when Spotify’s lyric panel does not work for you
| Service | Useful for | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music | A paid streaming replacement with synchronized lyrics in Apple’s ecosystem | Less suitable if you want to keep Spotify as your main service and only need occasional lyrics |
| YouTube Music | YouTube’s music-video ecosystem and user-uploaded catalog | May not preserve Spotify playlists, recommendations or library continuity |
| Musixmatch | A separate lyrics-focused lookup service | Synchronization, ads, privacy and platform integration can vary |
| Genius | Annotations, explanations and song context | Not primarily an offline, hands-free synchronized lyric player |
The bottom line
Spotify really did experiment with restricting lyrics for some Free users in 2024. But as of August 2026, its official documentation still provides ordinary online lyrics to both Free and Premium users, with availability limits for songs, markets and devices. The clear lyric-related Premium advantage is offline access—not a blanket requirement to pay before reading lyrics online.
