It was a manually installed Win32 desktop client, version 1.1.86.857—not a new Spotify service or a confirmed current download. Spotify warned that some video podcasts would not play, and recommended the web player for those episodes. The release is best understood as a historical milestone for Windows on ARM, not proof that the 2022 beta remains supported in 2026.
What Spotify released
Spotify’s Community moderator announced a beta build of the Windows desktop client compiled for ARM64. Spotify asked Windows-on-ARM users to try it and provide feedback before a broader release. The version identified in the release post was 1.1.86.857. Spotify’s release post and a May 31, 2022 report from Thurrott document the launch.
“Native” has a specific, limited meaning here: the desktop application was built for the 64-bit ARM architecture. It was still Spotify’s Win32 desktop app, not a redesign made exclusively for ARM. Native execution avoids depending entirely on Windows compatibility translation for a differently compiled app, but does not guarantee full feature parity, stability, or better performance in every situation.
Why an ARM64 build mattered
Before the beta, Windows ARM users commonly relied on a Spotify desktop build that was not native to their processor architecture. The ARM client addressed a long-running request in Spotify’s community, where users had sought a native version for years. That thread is evidence of demand among participants, not a measure of Spotify’s total customer base. The community request and rollout thread records the discussion.

A native app can reduce reliance on emulation or code translation and may improve compatibility with ARM Windows systems. One community member reported faster startup and playlist loading, but that is an individual observation, not a controlled benchmark. The release does not establish a general battery-life, CPU, memory, or speed improvement.
Which PCs it was meant for
The beta was for Windows PCs with ARM processors, not standard Intel- or AMD-based Windows computers. Examples raised in Spotify’s community discussion included Microsoft Surface Pro X models with SQ1 or SQ2 processors, Samsung Galaxy Book 2, the ARM variant of Galaxy Book S, Galaxy Book Go, Thomson Neo z3, and other Qualcomm Snapdragon-based Windows PCs. These are examples mentioned by users, not an official or exhaustive compatibility list. The device discussion also includes user reports, which should not be treated as Spotify certification.

- Windows on ARM means Windows running on ARM processor hardware.
- ARM64 is the 64-bit ARM architecture targeted by this build.
- An ARM64 app does not make every device identical: drivers, codecs, DRM, and peripherals can vary by PC and Windows configuration.
How installation worked at launch
Spotify distributed the beta through a special Community link rather than presenting it as a routine update to every Windows installation. The moderator instructed users to confirm that their PC had an ARM processor and uninstall earlier Spotify versions before installing. The release post contains Spotify’s original installation guidance.
- Check the PC’s processor or system information and confirm it is an ARM-based Windows device; a thin or lightweight laptop is not necessarily ARM-based.
- Uninstall the existing Spotify desktop app before installing the beta, as Spotify directed. If you rely on custom local settings, make a note of them first.
- At the time, download the ARM beta from Spotify’s special Community-provided link and run its installer.
- Sign in and test the features you use, then report problems in the Spotify Community thread.
This describes the 2022 beta process, not a recommendation to install an old build now. The available records do not establish that the beta link remains available, that its installer is supported, or that this version became Spotify’s standard ARM distribution. For a current installation, begin at Spotify’s official Windows download page and verify the package’s architecture and support status rather than assuming it is the same ARM64 beta.

- Laptop sitting too low on your desk: Raise it to eye level on a gas spring arm that adjusts from 9 to 18.75 inches and holds where you leave it. A hex key sets the tension, turning one way for heavier laptops and the other for lighter ones.
- Covered for as long as you own it: Mount-It! backs this laptop arm with a lifetime manufacturer warranty and US-based product specialists, available during standard business hours. If setup, tension, or fit raises a question, a product specialist can help.
- Fits laptops up to 17 inches and 13.2 lbs: Side holders open from 9.5 to 16.5 inches wide, and locking buckles, traction pads, and tabs keep the laptop from slipping. The 11.75 x 11 inch tray is ventilated so warm air escapes beneath. Check your laptop's width and weight first.
- Full motion for every working position: A 360 degree swivel, 90 degree tilt, and reach from 10.5 to 23.5 inches let you pull the screen close, push it back, or angle it toward a video call, then reposition it between sitting and standing.
- Screen up high, keyboard and mouse below: This laptop stand arm is a raised screen, not a typing surface, so pair it with an external keyboard and mouse. It clamps to the desk edge instead of a riser taking up space, and cable clips route cords along it.
Known limitations and reported problems
Some video podcasts did not play
Spotify explicitly warned that some video podcast episodes could fail in the beta, sometimes with a prompt to update the client. The stated workaround was Spotify’s web player: open the episode in the desktop app, choose Share, copy its web link, and paste that link into a browser. Spotify identified this as a video-podcast issue; it did not say that ordinary music or every audio-only podcast was affected. Spotify’s notice gives the workaround.
Some users reported sign-in errors
Later community posts included user reports of an accesspoint:19 error and difficulty signing in. Those reports do not establish that every installation failed, and the available discussion does not establish whether or when the issue was resolved. They are distinct from Spotify’s specifically documented video-podcast limitation. The later community feedback is anecdotal rather than a formal product-wide notice.

How it differed from Spotify’s other Windows options
Spotify has offered Windows access through a direct desktop download and the Microsoft Store, as well as its web player. These are separate distribution routes; their existence does not show that a particular current installer is ARM-native. In a later troubleshooting discussion, Spotify Community guidance suggested switching between the direct-download and Store versions for desktop-app problems. That was general advice, not confirmation that either package was the 2022 ARM beta. The troubleshooting response discusses those routes.
| Option | What the evidence establishes | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 ARM64 beta | Native ARM64 Win32 beta, version 1.1.86.857, distributed manually. |
That the historical installer is still available or supported. |
| Regular desktop download | A separate Spotify Windows installation route. | That every direct-download build is ARM64-native. |
| Microsoft Store app | A separate Windows distribution route discussed in Spotify troubleshooting. | That the Store package is the same app or architecture as the beta. |
| Web player | Spotify recommended it for affected video podcast episodes. | That it is the ARM desktop app or has identical desktop-app behavior. |
Who the beta suited—and who should be cautious
| Reader | Practical assessment |
|---|---|
| ARM PC owner who mainly listens to music or audio podcasts | A reasonable beta candidate at launch if willing to install manually and test. |
| Someone who regularly watches video podcasts | The web player was the documented workaround for affected episodes. |
| Intel- or AMD-based Windows PC owner | The ARM build was not intended for this hardware. |
| User relying on Spotify for work-critical playback | Beta status and reported sign-in problems made an experimental build a poor default. |
| Developer or Windows ARM enthusiast | The beta offered a way to evaluate native app support and provide feedback. |
What the launch did—and did not—say about Windows on ARM
Spotify’s beta was a meaningful sign that a mainstream desktop app was being built for ARM Windows. It did not establish that Windows ARM software compatibility was solved: support remained application-specific, and the beta itself had a documented feature limitation. Nor did “native” mean that every Windows ARM edition, device, or feature would work identically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe timeline is straightforward despite a date typo in the earlier discussion. Spotify’s community announcement appeared on May 24, 2022 and said the beta would arrive the following week, but referred to “30th of June,” which conflicts with the surrounding timing. The release post identifies the beta as ready on May 30, 2022; Thurrott reported it on May 31. Community users discussed both successful use and login problems in June. The announcement and release post show the distinction.
