LINE announced on February 16, 2016, that it would discontinue MixRadio. The service did not end that day: LINE said the wind-down would take several weeks, and its first-quarter 2016 financial report records MixRadio’s music-distribution business as having ended in March 2016.
What happened to MixRadio?
LINE Corporation said it would discontinue the operations of its subsidiary, MixRadio Limited. Its February 16, 2016 announcement described a planned closure over the coming weeks, as LINE worked with its technical team and partners. LINE’s first-quarter 2016 financial report later confirms that the MixRadio music-distribution business ended in March 2016. The available sources do not establish an exact final day.
So February 16 was the announcement date, not the date the service instantly disappeared.
Why did LINE close it?
LINE’s stated explanation combined MixRadio’s performance with the financial challenges and operating costs of running a music-streaming service. The company also cited its corporate priorities and said it judged future growth for MixRadio difficult to ensure. Those are LINE’s stated reasons; they do not establish that MixRadio was unprofitable or identify a single technical failure, licensing dispute, or user-number threshold.

LINE MUSIC was part of the strategic context, but LINE did not say it alone caused the shutdown. The company said LINE MUSIC would continue in Japan and Thailand. That does not mean it replaced MixRadio worldwide.
How MixRadio went from Nokia to LINE
- MixRadio grew out of Nokia’s music services.
- After Microsoft acquired Nokia’s Devices and Services business, MixRadio came under Microsoft.
- In December 2014, LINE agreed to acquire MixRadio’s business and assets from Microsoft Mobile Oy, as described in LINE’s acquisition announcement.
- LINE operated MixRadio before announcing its discontinuation in February 2016; the business ended in March.
LINE acquired the MixRadio business and assets—not Nokia or its handset operation. The shutdown came roughly fourteen months after the acquisition agreement.

What MixRadio offered
MixRadio was a personalized, radio-style streaming service, not simply an on-demand music catalogue. Listeners could create mixes around their musical tastes, with curated selections spanning genres, moods, and occasions. LINE’s 2014 description also highlighted offline listening for mixes and characterized the product as mobile-first. At the time of that announcement, LINE said MixRadio was available in 31 countries; that figure describes availability then, not a guarantee of access in every country throughout its later life.
Its product and business model changed over time. Contemporary coverage reported that LINE expanded availability to Android and iOS beyond MixRadio’s earlier Windows Phone focus, and that the LINE-era service used advertising and no paid tier. These details are reported by Gadgets 360 and Thurrott; they should not be confused with a single, unchanged product configuration across the service’s history.

What MixRadio users were told
LINE’s announcement said it would work with its technical team and partners to make the closure smooth. It did not set out a detailed user transition plan, refund policy, account-export process, or replacement service. The sources do not verify that playlists, listening history, or recommendations transferred automatically to LINE MUSIC, so users should not assume that they did.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the shutdown mattered
MixRadio represented a distinctive strand of Nokia’s mobile software history: a personalized listening experience that carried on through Microsoft ownership and then a brief period under LINE. Its closure also illustrated the difficulty of sustaining a separate streaming service amid high operating costs and financial pressure—challenges LINE explicitly cited, without publishing a more specific breakdown in its shutdown notice. The decision was a retreat from operating MixRadio, not merely a temporary app suspension.
