No—not as a blanket policy. Spotify’s current support page says ordinary lyrics are available to both Free and Premium users, though not for every song, device, or market. The headline describes a real past restriction: Spotify tested and rolled it out to some Free users in 2023 and 2024, then expanded access again. A newer distinction matters now: Spotify says offline lyrics are rolling out for Premium users.
What Spotify Free and Premium users get now
Spotify’s current lyrics help page lists lyrics for both Free and Premium. That does not guarantee lyrics for every track or device: Spotify says availability can vary by song, market, device, and rights-holder agreement.

Spotify announced the offline-lyrics feature on February 4, 2026: lyrics are saved with downloaded songs, and offline lyrics are rolling out globally for Premium users. The same announcement says lyric previews are rolling out for both tiers on mobile and tablet. Rollout language does not mean the feature has reached every account. See Spotify’s announcement.
How Spotify’s lyrics restriction unfolded
2021: lyrics launched for both tiers
On November 18, 2021, Spotify announced lyrics for Free and Premium users globally across supported platforms through its partnership with Musixmatch. Spotify’s launch announcement described the feature’s availability at that time.

September 2023: a limited Premium-only test
Spotify tested removing lyrics for selected Free users in two markets. Affected listeners saw a prompt to enjoy lyrics with Premium. Spotify described the change as a test, not a permanent worldwide policy; reports also noted inconsistent behavior across accounts and devices. TechCrunch reported on the test.
May 2024: a broader but uneven restriction
Reports described a wider rollout in which affected Free users were limited to lyrics for three songs per month, while some saw a Premium prompt. That three-song limit was reported for the 2024 rollout; it is not evidence of a current universal limit or of a restriction affecting every Free account worldwide. Spotify did not clearly announce it as a permanent global paywall. TechCrunch covered the rollout.

July 2024: Spotify expanded Free access again
On July 30, Spotify said it would expand lyrics availability for Free users so more people could see lyrics globally. Coverage described the move as a reversal of the earlier restriction. Spotify did not set out a single universal limit for every market or say that all future lyrics tests were over. See TechCrunch’s report and Engadget’s coverage.
Why lyrics may be missing from a song
- The song has no available lyrics. Spotify says lyrics are not available for every track. Rights-holder agreements can affect whether they appear, so a missing lyric does not by itself mean it has been paywalled.
- The device or market differs. Spotify says lyrics availability can vary by device and market, and features may roll out gradually.
- You want to see lyrics offline. Offline lyrics are a separate feature from ordinary in-app lyrics and are rolling out for Premium users.
- A setting or app behavior is involved. The mobile lyrics-preview control may be off, and the interface can differ across devices.
- Your account may be in a test or inconsistent rollout. Spotify has tested changes to lyrics access before, but one prompt does not establish a permanent global policy.
How to check lyrics and troubleshoot
- Try another song. Open a different, familiar track. If its lyrics appear, the first song may lack available lyrics rather than indicate an account-wide restriction.
- Open Now Playing. Lyrics may appear beneath the album artwork or over the Canvas on mobile, when available.
- Check the lyrics-preview control on mobile. In Now Playing, tap the three-dot menu (horizontal dots on iOS, vertical dots on Android), then tap Lyrics to turn the preview off or on. This is Spotify’s currently documented route; the interface may change. Spotify notes that lyrics previews are not available on music videos. Details are on its lyrics support page.
- Check what you mean by “offline.” If you are trying to view lyrics without an internet connection, check whether Premium’s offline-lyrics rollout is available on your account.
- Update Spotify and compare another supported device. These are general troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed fix for licensing or rollout limits.
- If lyrics are missing across tracks, check account and market behavior. A Premium prompt may reflect an account-specific test or local availability. If the issue persists across songs and devices, contact Spotify support.
Should you subscribe just to get lyrics?
If you only want ordinary online lyrics, a subscription is usually unnecessary: Spotify’s current help page says Free users can access lyrics too. Premium may be relevant if offline listening and offline lyrics matter to you, but it does not guarantee lyrics for every song. Consider the full set of subscription features rather than paying because one track is missing lyrics.
