Forgot to download music before your flight? Spotify’s Offline Backup may give you something to play: it builds an offline playlist from tracks already cached on your device, including recently streamed and queued music. It’s a useful safety net for Premium subscribers, but it can’t guarantee that a particular album or playlist will be there.
What Spotify Offline Backup does
Offline Backup is an automatically assembled playlist based on music Spotify has already stored on your device while you listen. Its contents can include recently streamed and queued tracks, and the selection can change as you keep listening. Spotify says the feature requires no manual playlist downloads; that does not mean it uses no storage. Cached audio still takes up space on your phone.
Spotify introduced Offline Backup on October 3, 2024, so it is not a new 2026 feature. The company describes it as a way to keep listening when a connection disappears. The important limitation is that it reflects what has been cached—not necessarily every song you like or the specific music you planned to hear. Spotify’s launch announcement explains how the playlist is created.
Why it can help on a flight
Airport Wi-Fi may be unreliable, restricted or unavailable, and cellular service typically drops after takeoff. If you forgot to prepare downloads, Offline Backup may still offer familiar music that you streamed recently. That makes it particularly handy for a short flight or as a backup when your listening habits are fairly consistent.

It is not a promise that your flight playlist will be intact. Recently streamed does not mean everything you enjoy is cached. A track you played long ago, a new release you sampled briefly, or a particular album you expect to hear may not appear. Spotify does not publish a guaranteed track count, fixed selection or specific retention period for Offline Backup.
How to find and play it
Spotify’s support documentation says Offline Backup is available to Premium users and requires Offline listening to be enabled. To try it:

- While you have a connection, make sure the Spotify app is up to date and check that Offline listening is switched on.
- Listen to the music you are most likely to want on your trip. Offline Backup draws on audio already cached by the app.
- When you are offline, open Spotify and tap Home, or search for Offline Backup.
- Tap Play active to start listening.
On mobile, Spotify documents mood and genre filters, as well as sorting or search options for title, artist, album, frequently played and recommended. The available controls may differ in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Spotify’s support page lists mobile phones, Android Auto and CarPlay as supported interfaces; this is not a general Free-tier offline music feature. See Spotify’s current Offline Backup instructions.

For a flight, deliberate downloads are the safer choice. Open the playlist or album you want, tap Download and confirm that it shows as downloaded. Then test playback with your phone in airplane mode before you leave for the airport. Spotify says Premium users can download up to 10,000 songs per device on up to five devices; it recommends at least 1 GB of free storage, though actual use depends on audio quality. Spotify also says conventional downloads require the account to connect online at least once every 30 days. That documented rule concerns conventional downloads; do not assume it describes Offline Backup’s own retention period. Spotify’s offline-download page has the current download details.

When to rely on it—and when not to
- Occasional flyer: Offline Backup is a worthwhile fallback if you often forget downloads and are happy with a familiar mix.
- Long-haul traveler: Download and test the albums or playlists you want before leaving. Treat Offline Backup as extra cover.
- Specific listening needs: If you need a particular playlist for sleep, anxiety management, work or concentration, do not depend on a cache you cannot curate.
- Limited phone storage: Clear space and download a small, carefully chosen playlist rather than assuming a large cache will be available.
Offline playback remains inside Spotify and depends on the app, account, subscription and music availability. It does not provide unrestricted audio files you can play in another music app. If your Premium subscription may lapse, or you are concerned about a track’s availability, prepare an appropriate backup.

First check that your account is Premium and Offline listening is enabled. Reconnect briefly before departure, update the app and play some of the music you want so Spotify has a chance to cache it. Check that your phone has free storage, then look on Home or search for “Offline Backup.” Finally, test in airplane mode. These checks can help, but they do not guarantee a particular song will be available; if it matters, download it deliberately and confirm it plays offline.
