If Spotify says it is offline, will not load, or will not play on Wi‑Fi, first check whether the connection actually reaches the internet. Open a website, then try Spotify on mobile data or another Wi‑Fi network. If Spotify works elsewhere, focus on the original network; if it fails everywhere, check Spotify’s status and troubleshoot the app or device.
Diagnose the problem before changing settings
A Wi‑Fi icon means your device is connected to a wireless access point; it does not guarantee that the network has working internet access or allows Spotify. Use these comparisons to narrow down the cause.
| What you notice | Likely area to check | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify works on mobile data but not on one Wi‑Fi network | Router, captive portal, filtering, or network policy | Try another Wi‑Fi and complete any browser sign-in page |
| Spotify fails on every network | Offline mode, app, device, account, or Spotify service | Check Spotify’s playback guidance and its official status account, @SpotifyStatus |
| Other websites and apps also fail on the same Wi‑Fi | Device connection, router, or internet service provider | Reconnect Wi‑Fi and check whether other devices are affected |
| Only the desktop app fails | Desktop app data, firewall, proxy, VPN, or security software | Test Spotify in a browser, then check app updates and firewall permissions |
| Spotify says “Offline” | Spotify’s app-level Offline mode may be enabled | Turn off Offline mode in Spotify settings |
| Downloaded tracks play, but search or streaming does not | Local downloads work, but online connectivity may not | Check Offline mode and test a different network |
Spotify recommends checking other apps and websites, toggling Wi‑Fi, trying another connection, and checking for service issues. Its offline troubleshooting guide and playback troubleshooting guide cover the core checks below.
1. Turn off Spotify Offline mode
Spotify’s Offline mode is separate from your phone’s Airplane mode and from having downloaded music. When Offline mode is on, tracks that are not downloaded may be unavailable even if Wi‑Fi works.

On a phone or tablet
- Open Spotify and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy, then Data-saving and offline.
- Turn Offline mode off if it is enabled.
On a computer
On Mac, open the Spotify menu in the Apple menu bar. On Windows, open File or the three-dot menu. Turn off Offline mode if it is selected. Menu labels can vary by app version; Spotify’s current offline instructions provide the reference paths.
2. Reconnect Wi‑Fi and restart the router
- Switch Wi‑Fi off on the affected device.
- Wait about 30 seconds, then switch Wi‑Fi back on.
- Reopen Spotify and test playback.
- If the problem remains and you control the router, restart it and wait until other devices have internet access before testing again.
Also open a normal web page and try another online app. If they fail too, troubleshoot the network rather than Spotify. Test another device on the same Wi‑Fi and the affected device on a different network; move closer to the router if the signal is weak. Restarting is not the same as factory-resetting a router: a factory reset erases configuration and should only be done under the router maker’s or ISP’s instructions.
3. Check for network restrictions or a sign-in page
Schools, workplaces, hotels, libraries, airports, and other shared networks may restrict Spotify. On a captive-portal network, open a browser and complete the sign-in or terms-of-service page before reopening the app.
If Spotify works on mobile data or home Wi‑Fi but not on managed Wi‑Fi, ask the network administrator whether Spotify is permitted. Do not try to bypass school or workplace rules. A VPN can change traffic routing, but it may be prohibited, slow the connection, or create another failure; it is not a universal Spotify fix.

4. Update Spotify and your device
Install Spotify updates through the device’s official app store or Spotify’s official desktop distribution channel. If practical, install pending operating-system updates and restart the device. Update controls differ across Android, iOS/iPadOS, Windows, macOS, smart TVs, and game consoles, so use the update screen for your platform rather than assuming a single menu path. Avoid unofficial or modified Spotify builds.
5. Clear Spotify’s cache
Spotify lists clearing cache among its playback troubleshooting steps. Cache is temporary data; clearing it is different from erasing all app storage or reinstalling, which can require signing in again and downloading offline content again.
Android
A typical path is Settings → Apps → Spotify → Storage → Clear cache. The exact labels vary by Android version and device maker.
iPhone and iPad
iOS does not provide the same universal system-level cache button as Android. Use Spotify’s in-app storage or cache control if available; otherwise follow Spotify’s platform-specific support instructions before removing the app.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Desktop
Use Spotify’s official cache or storage controls, or its clean-reinstall instructions. Avoid deleting guessed folders: cache locations depend on the operating system and how Spotify was installed. Spotify’s playback help includes the cache-clearing recommendation.
6. Check desktop firewall and security settings
A Windows firewall or third-party security tool may block Spotify. Proxy settings, VPNs, antivirus web shields, DNS filters, ad blockers, or parental controls can also interfere, though none is the cause of every playback failure.
- Check whether your firewall or security software is blocking Spotify.
- If you confirm a block, allow the official Spotify application through the relevant control.
- Restore normal protection immediately; do not leave a firewall or antivirus disabled.
- If this is a work or school computer, contact its administrator rather than changing managed security settings.
Spotify identifies desktop firewall permissions as a possible connection issue in its offline help and playback help.
7. Reinstall Spotify only after the earlier checks
Reinstalling can help if local app files are damaged, but it will not fix a network block, router failure, or service outage. Before uninstalling, confirm you know the email address or login method for your account and understand that downloaded music and podcasts may need to be downloaded again.

When to contact support
- Internet provider: Other websites and apps fail, or multiple devices cannot reach the internet on your home network.
- Network administrator: Spotify works on other networks but not on school, work, hotel, or other managed Wi‑Fi.
- Router or security-software provider: Home filtering or firewall settings appear to be blocking Spotify.
- Spotify: The problem persists across networks after app troubleshooting, or Spotify’s official status communication reports an incident. Spotify Community’s connection troubleshooting FAQ also recommends comparing networks and checking router or firewall permissions.
- Device manufacturer: Spotify fails only on one device after updating and reinstalling, while it works elsewhere.
Use offline downloads as a contingency, not a repair
Spotify Premium supports offline downloads, which can keep music available when you know internet access will be unreliable. Downloads do not repair Wi‑Fi, remove network restrictions, or resolve an outage; the feature is a fallback for listening, not a troubleshooting step. Spotify’s offline-download page describes the feature and its conditions. Availability and account terms can vary by market.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Spotify say it is offline when Wi‑Fi is connected?
The Wi‑Fi connection may not have working internet access, Spotify’s Offline mode may be on, or the network may restrict Spotify. Open a website, check Offline mode, and compare with another network.
Why does Spotify work on mobile data but not Wi‑Fi?
That comparison points toward the Wi‑Fi network, router, captive portal, filtering, firewall, or network policy. It is a useful clue, not proof of one specific cause.
Will clearing Spotify’s cache delete my playlists?
Clearing cache removes temporary files and is not the same as deleting your account or playlists. Clearing app storage or reinstalling is more disruptive and may require signing in again and re-downloading offline content.

Will reinstalling Spotify delete downloaded songs?
Downloaded music and podcasts may need to be downloaded again after reinstalling. Confirm your login method and available device storage first.
Can a VPN fix Spotify on Wi‑Fi?
A VPN may change traffic routing, but it is not a guaranteed fix, can reduce performance, and may violate a managed network’s rules.
Does Spotify Premium fix Wi‑Fi playback?
No. Premium’s offline downloads can provide a listening fallback, but a subscription does not fix a broken connection, network block, firewall, app corruption, or service outage.
Why does Spotify work in a browser but not the app?
The desktop or mobile app may need an update, cache cleanup, a firewall permission, or a reinstall. If the browser works on the same device and network, a general Wi‑Fi outage is less likely.
