The U.S. launch in November 2022 offered up to 720p HD; Netflix upgraded the tier to 1080p Full HD, two simultaneous streams and downloads in November 2023. In the United States, Netflix currently lists Standard with ads at $8.99 per month, with advertising, a small number of unavailable titles, device-compatibility exceptions and no listed 4K benefit.
Was Netflix’s ad tier ever 480p?
No official Netflix announcement identified 480p as the plan’s resolution. Netflix’s October 13, 2022 launch announcement specified video quality of up to 720p/HD for Basic with Ads. You can read the announcement at Netflix’s newsroom.
The 480p figure may have come from an older plan description, a rumor or leak, a device or browser limitation, or a moment when adaptive streaming reduced quality. A plan’s advertised maximum is not a frame-by-frame guarantee: the title master, device, app, browser, digital-rights management, account settings, bandwidth and network stability all affect actual playback.
Therefore, seeing 480p on one device or session does not establish a 480p limit for the subscription. The current official maximum for Standard with ads is 1080p Full HD.

What Netflix launched in 2022
Netflix announced Basic with Ads on October 13, 2022, with U.S. availability scheduled for November 3, 2022, at $6.99 per month. The launch specification included:
- Up to 720p/HD video quality.
- An average of four to five minutes of advertising per hour, according to Netflix’s launch description.
- Commercials before and during programs.
- Some movies and shows unavailable because Netflix did not yet hold the necessary advertising rights.
- No downloads for offline viewing.
The initial rollout covered 12 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico and Spain. Availability and plan names can change by market.
What changed in November 2023
In its one-year update, Netflix said the ad-supported tier would receive three major upgrades: 1080p video instead of 720p, two concurrent streams instead of one, and downloads for offline viewing. The announcement is available at Netflix’s newsroom.
That update makes “720p with no downloads” an accurate description of the launch product, but not of the current plan. Articles repeating those specifications without a date are outdated.

What Standard with ads includes in the U.S.
Netflix’s U.S. consumer page, viewed August 18, 2026, lists the following features for Standard with ads:
| Feature | Current U.S. detail |
|---|---|
| Monthly price | $8.99 per month |
| Maximum listed resolution | 1080p / Full HD |
| Simultaneous streams | 2 |
| Downloads | Included |
| Advertising | Ads before and during selected programming |
| Profiles | Up to 5 |
| 4K/Ultra HD | Not listed as included |
| Catalog | A small number of titles may be unavailable because of licensing |
These are U.S. details at that date, not a universal price or feature promise. Taxes, currencies, plan names, billing partners and availability vary by country. Check Netflix’s current plan page for your market.
How the ads work now
Netflix describes the current experience as a few short ads per hour. Ads can run before and during selected shows and films; some newly released movies may show ads only before playback. You cannot skip or fast-forward while an ad is playing. Netflix indicates the number of ads in a break and can show expected breaks on the playback progress bar.
The four-to-five-minute figure belongs to Netflix’s 2022 launch description. It should not be treated as a fixed current allowance for every title or viewing session.

The restrictions that still matter
Some titles are locked
A title can appear in Netflix’s catalog yet remain unavailable to an ad-plan member because of licensing. Netflix marks affected programs with a lock icon. Rights differ by country and can change when agreements are renewed, so this is a catalog-rights issue rather than a resolution issue.
Older devices may not support the ad experience
Netflix says a small percentage of devices cannot run the ad-supported service because their app or operating system cannot be updated to software that supports ads. To check a device:
- Open Netflix and open the profile icon or Get Help menu.
- Select Plan Compatibility when that option appears.
- Review whether the device supports the ad-supported experience.
Menu labels vary by device, app version and language. If the device is incompatible, update its software where possible, try a newer TV app, streaming box, console, phone, tablet or browser, or use a plan supported by that device. Netflix’s guidance is at its Help Center.
4K is not listed
Netflix positions Standard with ads as a 1080p plan and does not list 4K/Ultra HD as an included feature. A 4K television alone does not make Netflix stream in 4K on this tier. Netflix’s current page does not provide a basis for declaring every HDR, Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos feature categorically disabled, so those technologies should not be treated as universally excluded without specific documentation.

Bundles may differ
The ad-supported plan may not be offered through every third-party billing partner or package. If Netflix is included with a carrier or other bundle, check that provider’s plan options rather than assuming direct Netflix availability.
Kids profiles are a limited exception
Netflix’s U.S. ad-plan page says Kids profiles do not have ads. That does not make the rest of the account ad-free.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why playback might show 480p
If a stream looks like 480p despite a 1080p plan maximum, investigate the playback setup rather than assuming a subscription cap:
- Check for an outdated Netflix app or device operating system.
- Try the supported Netflix app instead of a browser with different DRM limits.
- Test the connection for instability or insufficient bandwidth.
- Allow adaptive streaming time to increase quality after playback starts.
- Review account playback settings and the title’s available master.
- Compare another supported device before drawing a plan-level conclusion.
“Up to 1080p” describes the highest supported quality under suitable conditions, not a guarantee that every frame will be delivered at that resolution.

Who should choose each Netflix option?
Standard with ads
This is the practical choice for a budget-conscious household that mainly watches on 1080p screens, can tolerate interruptions, needs downloads and two streams, and does not depend on titles that may be locked. The current trade-off is no longer chiefly resolution; it is advertising, licensing exclusions, device compatibility and a lower picture-quality ceiling than Premium.
Ad-free Standard
Choose an ad-free Standard option if uninterrupted viewing matters and two simultaneous streams are enough. Netflix’s price and availability depend on your country and billing arrangement, so use the live account comparison rather than relying on an old published figure.
Premium
Premium is the relevant direction for households seeking Netflix’s highest included resolution, 4K/Ultra HD where supported, and more simultaneous streams. Confirm current local features and price on Netflix before subscribing.
Bottom line
Netflix’s ad tier should be described as a lower-cost 1080p plan with advertising—not a 480p plan. The 720p limit, one-stream allowance and lack of downloads belonged to the 2022 launch. Today, check the lock icon for title availability, verify device compatibility, and choose an ad-free or Premium tier if interruptions or 4K expectations outweigh the savings.
