Spotify lyrics can disappear for two very different reasons: lyrics may not be available for that particular song, version, device, or market—or the Spotify app may be failing to load them. Start by testing another song on the same device. If lyrics appear for other tracks, repeatedly reinstalling Spotify will probably not help; the missing lyrics are more likely a catalog or rights-availability issue.
Spotify says lyrics are available to both Free and Premium users, but not necessarily for every song or device. Premium is therefore not a general fix for missing lyrics.
First, identify which problem you have
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first move |
|---|---|---|
| Lyrics are missing from one song | The lyrics are unavailable for that track, release, version, device, or market. | Play another song, then try another version of the same song if one exists. |
| Lyrics are missing from every song on one device | The lyrics control, preview setting, app, cache, connection, or device software may be the problem. | Check the Lyrics control, restart Spotify, and compare with the web player. |
| Lyrics are missing on several devices | A service-side, account-side, market, or catalog problem becomes more plausible. | Test several songs and check Spotify’s official issue channels. |
| The Lyrics button disappeared after an update | The interface or lyrics-preview control may have changed. | Use the current mobile or desktop path below rather than an old screenshot. |
Spotify explains that lyrics availability can vary by song and device and depends partly on agreements with rights holders. New lyrics can also be added over time. That means a single missing track is not automatically evidence that your account, phone, or subscription is broken.
Make sure you are opening lyrics the right way
On an Android phone, iPhone, or tablet
- Start playing a song.
- Open the Now Playing screen by tapping the song bar at the bottom of the app.
- Scroll down to the Lyrics section.
Depending on the current app layout and device, Spotify may show a lyrics card or a control that you can tap to expand. If the lyrics card is collapsed, the lyrics have not necessarily been removed.

On the desktop app or web player
- Play a song.
- Look along the bottom playback bar.
- Select Lyrics.
The desktop and web-player layout can differ from the mobile layout. If the control is absent for one track but present for another, test several songs before changing app settings.
On a supported TV, game console, car system, or other device
Open the song’s playback view and select the device’s Lyrics option if it is available. Not every Spotify-compatible device supports lyrics in the same way, so a feature visible on a phone may not appear on a speaker, television, car interface, or console.
Fix Spotify lyrics not showing on mobile
1. Check the Lyrics preview setting
On mobile, open the Now Playing screen, tap the three-dot menu, and tap Lyrics to switch the lyrics preview on or off. If the preview has been turned off, switching it back on may restore the lyrics card for tracks that support it.
This setting only applies where lyrics are available. It cannot create lyrics for a song that Spotify does not currently provide. Spotify also notes that lyrics preview is not available on music videos, so a music-video version may behave differently from the standard audio track.
2. Test a different song
Play a well-known track that normally has lyrics, preferably from a different album or artist. This simple test separates a track-level availability problem from a device-level app problem:
- Other songs show lyrics: the original song or release likely has an availability limitation. Check for another version, such as a remaster, album release, clean version, or single.
- No songs show lyrics: continue with the app, connection, cache, and device checks below.
3. Fully close and reopen Spotify
Exit Spotify completely rather than merely switching to another app. Reopen it, play a song, and check the Lyrics section again. Restarting is a low-risk first step because it does not remove downloads, playlists, or account data.

4. Update Spotify and your device
Install any pending Spotify update from your device’s app store. Then check for an operating-system update in the device’s system settings. Spotify includes both app and device updates in its general troubleshooting guidance because outdated software can cause display, playback, and content-loading problems.
5. Confirm the connection and Offline Mode
Make sure the phone or tablet is online and that Spotify is not stuck in Offline Mode. If possible, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or test a different Wi-Fi network. A connection that is good enough for a cached song may still fail to load additional lyrics data.

6. Clear Spotify’s cache
Use Spotify’s in-app storage settings to clear the cache, then restart the app. The exact menu wording can vary by operating-system version, but it is generally found under your profile picture, Settings and privacy, and a storage or cache section.
Clearing the cache is not the same as deleting your Spotify account, removing playlists, or cancelling Premium. It removes temporary files. However, avoid confusing Clear cache with options that remove downloaded music or podcasts if you want to preserve offline content.
7. Reinstall Spotify only after the other steps
Uninstalling and reinstalling the app can repair a damaged local installation, but it has a significant practical cost: Spotify says downloaded music and podcasts must be downloaded again afterward. Use this step when lyrics are missing for every song on one device and the less disruptive fixes have failed.
Before reinstalling, make sure you know your sign-in method and have enough time and data to restore offline downloads. Reinstallation is not a guaranteed fix for lyrics that are unavailable because of song, market, device-support, or rights-holder limitations.

What to do when lyrics are missing from only one song
Do not treat a single missing track as proof that Spotify is malfunctioning. Spotify says lyrics may not be available for all songs and devices, and availability can change as rights-holder agreements and catalog data change.
Use this checklist:
- Play another song on the same device.
- Search for the exact song title and inspect alternate releases.
- Try the album version instead of a playlist or compilation version, or vice versa.
- Compare the standard audio recording with a music-video version, remembering that lyrics preview is not available on music videos.
- Try the same track in the desktop app or web player.
If other songs work and the same track has no lyrics across devices, there may be nothing to repair locally. You can report the missing catalog item to Spotify, check for a known issue, and try again later rather than repeatedly clearing the cache or buying a new phone.
What to do when lyrics are missing from every song
When the problem affects every track on one device, prioritize local troubleshooting:
- Verify that you are looking for the Lyrics control in the correct place.
- Turn the mobile Lyrics preview setting back on.
- Restart Spotify.
- Update Spotify and the operating system.
- Check the connection and Offline Mode.
- Clear the cache.
- Compare with another device or the web player.
- Reinstall Spotify if the problem remains and re-downloading offline content is acceptable.
If lyrics work in the web player but not in the phone app, the issue is probably limited to the phone’s app installation, device configuration, or software version. If lyrics fail everywhere, move to the service and account checks below.

Check Spotify’s service status before doing anything drastic
A widespread issue can make local fixes ineffective. Check @SpotifyStatus and Spotify’s Community Ongoing Issues board for reports affecting lyrics, playback, or content loading.
Status information is time-sensitive. A page showing normal operation at one moment does not prove that a later lyrics problem is local, and a lack of a public incident does not prove that your account is at fault. Use the service check alongside the one-song-versus-every-song and one-device-versus-every-device tests.

Do you need Spotify Premium to see lyrics?
No. Spotify’s current support information says lyrics are available to both Free and Premium users. Upgrading is therefore not an evidence-based solution when lyrics are missing because a song, device, market, or rights-holder agreement does not provide them.
Premium may be relevant for other reasons, such as offline listening, but that is separate from lyrics availability. Do not upgrade solely to unlock a Lyrics button that is absent for one track or unsupported on one device.
When to contact Spotify
Contact Spotify support or report the issue after you have established the pattern and completed the practical device checks. Include:
- Whether the problem affects one song or every song.
- The exact song title, artist, album, and version.
- Your country or market.
- Your device model and operating-system version.
- Whether you are using the mobile app, desktop app, web player, or another supported device.
- Your Spotify app version.
- Whether lyrics work on another device or in the web player.
- Whether the problem began after an update or account change.
This information helps distinguish an unavailable catalog item from an app or service problem. Avoid sending your password or other sensitive account information in a public forum.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
- Do not assume Premium is required. It is not.
- Do not reinstall immediately. You will need to download offline music and podcasts again.
- Do not promise that clearing the cache will restore lyrics. It only addresses possible local app data problems.
- Do not assume every missing lyric is caused by one specific provider, licensing dispute, or outage. Spotify’s public guidance supports general availability and rights limitations, not a single explanation for every track.
- Do not buy a new phone to solve the problem. First compare the web player, another device, and multiple songs.
Optional Windows troubleshooting
If Spotify lyrics are missing alongside broader Windows app crashes, severe sluggishness, or repeated cache and installation problems, you can investigate the computer as a whole after completing Spotify’s official steps. General system-cleanup or troubleshooting software may be relevant to those broader PC symptoms, but it is not an official Spotify lyrics fix and should not be used as a substitute for checking song availability, the web player, Spotify updates, or known issues.
For broader Windows repair or stability issues beyond Spotify itself, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional troubleshooting tool to consider, not an official fix for missing lyrics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are Spotify lyrics missing from only one song?
The lyrics may not currently be available for that song, release, version, device, or market. Test another song and look for an alternate release before troubleshooting the app.

Can Offline Mode stop Spotify lyrics from appearing?
It can prevent Spotify from loading content that requires an online connection. Confirm that the app is online, turn off Offline Mode if necessary, and test another network.
Will reinstalling Spotify restore missing lyrics?
It may help if the local app installation is damaged, but it cannot add lyrics that Spotify does not provide for a song or device. Reinstalling also means downloading saved offline music and podcasts again.
Do I need a new phone when Spotify lyrics are not showing?
Usually not. First test another song, the web player, and another device, then update Spotify and the operating system and clear the cache. The result of those comparisons is more useful than replacing hardware.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: test another song first. Lyrics missing from one track usually indicate availability or catalog limits; lyrics missing from every track on one device call for app, connection, cache, and update checks. Compare with the web player before reinstalling, and do not upgrade to Premium solely to get lyrics.
