Yes—Spotify launched lossless streaming in 2025. Called Lossless in the app, it rolled out to eligible Premium listeners in supported markets and streams at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz in FLAC. It is part of Premium rather than a separate Spotify HiFi subscription, but you need a compatible playback path to hear the signal without another lossy conversion.
From Spotify HiFi promise to Lossless rollout
Spotify first announced Spotify HiFi on February 22, 2021, promising CD-quality lossless audio. The feature did not arrive then. On September 10, 2025, Spotify announced that Lossless had begun rolling out to Premium subscribers. By October 6, the company said it was available in more than 50 markets, including the United States in the initial rollout. Spotify’s 2021 announcement and its 2025 launch announcement mark the gap between the promise and the product.
The name changed, too: the launched feature is called Lossless, not a separately sold HiFi tier. Availability depends on market, Premium eligibility, app and playback-device support. Spotify says Lossless is available for nearly every song in its catalog, not necessarily every individual track.
What quality does Spotify Lossless provide?
Spotify’s published maximum is up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC stereo. FLAC is a lossless format: unlike a lossy encoding, it preserves the audio data in the file. The 44.1 kHz sample rate is the same rate used for CD audio; 24-bit depth is greater than a CD’s 16-bit depth.

That specification is not the same as saying Spotify offers high-resolution streaming at 24-bit/96 kHz or 192 kHz. “Lossless” means the encoded stream preserves its source data; “hi-res” is commonly used for higher sample rates or bit depths. Nor can a lossless file repair a poor recording or master, undo heavy dynamic-range compression, or create detail that is not present in the source. Spotify says loudness normalization still applies regardless of format, so Lossless does not automatically make a track louder. Does Lossless cost extra?
Spotify lists Lossless as a Premium feature on its U.S. plan page, not as a separate subscription surcharge. At the time the cited page was checked, it showed Premium Individual at $12.99 per month after the displayed introductory offer, Student at $6.99, Duo at $18.99, and Family at $21.99. Prices and promotions vary by country and can change; check the current U.S. Premium page or your local Spotify checkout for the amount that applies to you. Do not assume every plan in every market has identical access.
How to turn Lossless on
Lossless is not necessarily enabled automatically. Set it on each device you use, and choose separately for streaming over Wi-Fi, streaming over cellular, and downloads.

- Open Spotify and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Open Audio Quality on iOS or Media Quality on Android. Labels can differ by app version.
- Choose Lossless for the relevant Wi-Fi, cellular, and download settings.
On desktop, open Spotify’s settings and look for the audio or media quality controls; choose Lossless for streaming and downloads where the option is available. Menu names and availability can differ among desktop versions and connected devices. Spotify’s Premium benefits help page provides current account guidance.
Check the Now Playing view or playback bar for a Lossless indicator. When using Spotify Connect, check the Connect Picker or the device’s quality indicator as well. The label confirms the selected Spotify playback quality, not necessarily the final signal reaching your ears: Bluetooth, an operating-system mixer, a DAC, receiver, or speaker may alter the output. What equipment and connection do you need?
A practical best-case chain is: eligible Spotify Premium account, Lossless enabled for the device, stable Wi-Fi, and wired headphones or speakers—or a supported non-Bluetooth route such as Spotify Connect. You do not need an expensive DAC to try the feature; a compatible app/device and wired playback path are the key starting points.

Bluetooth is the common catch. In Spotify’s normal supported setup, its Lossless stream does not arrive at Bluetooth headphones as an uncompressed lossless signal. The app may be set to Lossless while Bluetooth transmits audio using a lossy codec. That is a practical limit of this playback path, not a blanket claim that every Bluetooth technology is incapable of lossless audio.

Confirm the exact model and firmware: Spotify’s broad compatibility with thousands of Connect devices does not mean all of them support Lossless. The launch announcement named supported Connect devices from brands including Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser, but brand names alone do not establish support for every product. Spotify said additional devices, including Sonos and Amazon devices, were expected in the following month; check the current compatibility information for your specific model rather than relying on that announcement.

Lossless preserves more of the source data than a lossy stream, but that technical distinction does not guarantee an audible improvement for every person or setup. You are more likely to notice a difference with wired headphones or speakers, in a quiet room, using a well-recorded track and a playback chain that avoids unnecessary processing. If you compare formats, use the same recording and master and match playback volume; otherwise a louder version or a different master can bias the comparison.

You may notice little or nothing through Bluetooth headphones, small speakers, a noisy car, or a heavily processed playback chain. Lossless will not make a compressed or poorly mastered recording sound newly detailed. If you already enjoy Spotify and mostly listen over Bluetooth, it may be reasonable to leave a lower quality selected rather than spend more data and storage for a difference you may not hear.
Data, downloads, and buffering
Lossless files are larger than Spotify’s compressed streams. Expect higher cellular-data use, more storage for offline playlists, and potentially longer downloads, buffering, or startup when the connection is weak. Spotify’s support guidance recommends a steady connection of roughly 1.5–2 Mbps for the best Lossless listening experience; that is guidance, not a guarantee against congestion or interruptions on a busy network. - Consider a lower quality for cellular streaming.
- Download large playlists over a stable connection and check available storage.
- Allow extra time for a first play or download, especially on a weak network.
Spotify Lossless or another music service?
Spotify is a sensible choice if you value its recommendations, playlists, social features, device handoff, and existing listening history, and want lossless playback within an eligible Premium plan. Its format ceiling is up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, so it may not suit listeners whose priority is higher sample rates, explicit hi-res catalog labeling, audiophile-oriented controls, immersive formats, or a particular catalog.
Those priorities can justify comparing Apple Music, TIDAL, Qobuz, or Amazon Music, but no service is universally better. Compare the formats actually available to you, supported devices, catalog and discovery features, ecosystem, and local price. The right question is not simply which service has the largest number on its format label; it is whether its playback options and library fit how you listen.
If Lossless is missing or does not seem to work
- The option is missing: Confirm that your account has an eligible Premium plan and that Lossless is available in your market. Update the app, check the correct device, and look for platform-specific menu labels.
- It sounds compressed: Confirm Lossless is enabled on the playback device, check whether the audio is going over Bluetooth, and verify that the speaker or receiver supports Spotify Lossless and is connected through the intended route. Compare the same master at matched volume.
- It buffers or starts slowly: Try stable Wi-Fi, lower cellular quality, or download the track over a stronger connection. Reconnect the playback device and confirm its own quality setting.
Spotify selects the best playback format supported by the account, app, connection, and receiving setup. Premium access alone does not guarantee that every link in the chain is lossless.
