Spotify Jam is available in the desktop app, but it is not a new 2026 launch. Spotify added desktop support in March 2024. The feature lets people listen to the same Spotify session together, add songs to a shared queue, and receive group recommendations. A Premium account is required to host a Jam or join one remotely; Free users may join some Premium-hosted Jams in person.
What Spotify Jam does
Jam is Spotify’s synchronized listening feature. Everyone in a session can contribute songs to a shared queue, while Spotify can suggest tracks based on the group’s combined listening tastes. The host can also manage participants and control whether guests may change the volume or alter what is playing.
It works in two broad ways:
- In-person Jam: People contribute from their phones while one host device or speaker plays the session.
- Remote Jam: Participants listen from separate devices. Remote participation requires Spotify Premium.
Jam is not a built-in voice or video chat room. It synchronizes Spotify playback and queue activity, so groups that want conversation will need a separate chat service.

When did Spotify Jam come to desktop?
Spotify announced Jam globally on September 26, 2023. The company later announced desktop availability on March 13, 2024, with Spotify Community posts describing the desktop rollout on March 14 and 15. Current Spotify support documentation still includes instructions for starting and managing a Jam from desktop.

That means headlines describing Spotify as newly bringing Jam to desktop in 2026 are misleading. The desktop feature remains available, but its original rollout happened in 2024.

Who needs Spotify Premium?

The important distinction is between remote and in-person participation. It is inaccurate to say that every participant always needs Premium, but a Free account cannot freely join a remote Jam.
How to start a Jam on Spotify desktop
- Open the installed Spotify desktop app and sign in.
- Find the track or playlist you want to use as the starting point.
- Click the three-dot menu, or right-click the track or playlist.
- Select Start a Jam.
- Click Invite.
- Share the generated QR code or Share link.
Spotify’s exact labels and layout can vary by operating system, app version, account type, and rollout state. If the option is not visible on a general page, try opening the menu for a specific track or playlist. The current Spotify Jam support page is the best reference for the latest interface.
How friends join
Participants can open the host’s invitation link, scan the QR code, or follow Spotify’s prompts in the device and Jam interface. For an in-person session, people can also bring their phones close together—approximately within one metre—with Spotify accounts signed in and Bluetooth enabled.

After opening the invitation, Spotify may ask whether the person is joining remotely or in person. A Premium account is required for remote listening. Free users may join an in-person Jam hosted by a Premium subscriber, generally contributing through the host’s playback setup rather than independently streaming the session.
A desktop computer can host or join the session, while participants may still use mobile devices to join, select listening modes, and contribute tracks.
What the host and guests can control
Jam is collaborative, but it is not completely democratic by default. The host retains moderation powers, including:
- Removing participants.
- Allowing or blocking guest volume changes.
- Allowing or blocking changes to what is playing.
- Ending the session by leaving it.
Guests can add tracks through Search or Spotify’s group recommendations. A host can allow guests to add songs while preventing them from changing the currently playing track. This setup is useful for parties or group work sessions where everyone should suggest music but one person should prevent constant skips.
Speakers and playback devices
Spotify says Jam works with smart speakers and most Bluetooth speakers. Before starting, the host should select the intended speaker from Spotify’s available-device list. In an in-person Jam, that host device or speaker normally provides the shared audio.

If guests cannot change the volume, the host may not have enabled shared volume control, or the speaker may not support the relevant controls. In that case, adjust volume from the host device or the speaker itself.

How to leave or end a Jam
A participant can leave through the current device or Jam interface by selecting Leave, or by switching to another playback device. The host’s departure is different: according to Spotify’s current support instructions, leaving as host ends the Jam for everyone.
If the group wants to continue, another Premium participant must start a new session.
Troubleshooting Spotify Jam
“Start a Jam” is missing
- Confirm that the signed-in account has an active Premium subscription.
- Update and restart the Spotify desktop app.
- Right-click a specific track or playlist instead of using a general page menu.
- Confirm that you are using the installed desktop app rather than a browser tab.
- Check Spotify’s current support documentation if the option remains unavailable.
Do not assume that reinstalling Spotify will always solve the problem. Subscription status, account configuration, region, and rollout state can also affect what appears.
The invitation link does not work
- Make sure the host has not ended the Jam.
- Ask the participant to open the link while signed in to Spotify.
- Try the QR code or create a new share link.
- Check whether a Free user is attempting to join remotely.
- Confirm that the participant is not using an old or expired invitation.
Playback is not synchronized
- Confirm that everyone joined the same Jam rather than merely opening the same playlist.
- Check that the host selected the correct playback device.
- Verify that the speaker supports the relevant Jam controls.
- Have participants leave and rejoin if the session appears stale.
Spotify describes Jam as real-time shared listening, but that does not guarantee perfect synchronization or uninterrupted playback under every network condition.

Guests can add songs but cannot control playback
This may be intentional. The host can permit queue additions while disabling the setting that lets guests change what is playing.

Spotify added Listening Activity and Request to Jam to Messages in January 2026. These features let eligible users see what friends are listening to and request a remote Jam from a Messages conversation.
This is separate from the desktop workflow. The original Jam starts from a track or playlist menu; Request to Jam starts inside Spotify Messages. Spotify described the Messages features as rolling out in Messages-enabled markets, so they should not be treated as universally available. Listening Activity is also opt-in and includes visibility controls.
For a desktop Jam, the reliable starting point remains the track or playlist menu followed by Start a Jam.
Is Spotify Jam right for your group?
Jam is a strong choice when everyone already uses Spotify, the group wants a temporary shared queue, and one person should moderate playback. It is especially practical for an in-person gathering with one speaker or for a remote group in which every listener has Premium.

It is a poor fit when remote participants use Free accounts, the group relies on different music services, or the goal is a permanent editable playlist. It is also not a replacement for voice or video chat.
For groups that want synchronized Spotify listening alongside Discord text or voice chat, Spotify supports Discord integration and Listen Along. Spotify identifies Listen Along as a Premium feature and notes that listening with a Free user may result in silence during advertisements. Discord is therefore better suited to groups that prioritize communication, while Jam is more directly suited to collaborative queue building.
What Spotify Premium costs in the United States
Spotify’s U.S. Premium page showed the following prices in August 2026: Individual at $12.99 per month, Student at $6.99, Duo at $18.99, and Family at $21.99. Eligible new Individual subscribers were shown a limited introductory offer of one month at $0, followed by $12.99 per month.
Prices, taxes, promotions, and eligibility can change, and these figures apply specifically to the United States. Someone who only attends occasional in-person Jams may not need their own Premium account if a Premium host supplies the playback device. Remote participants do need Premium under Spotify’s current Jam rules. See Spotify’s official Premium page for current regional terms.
Bottom line
Spotify Jam is a real-time shared listening session with a collaborative queue, group recommendations, and host moderation—not a voice or video party. It has been available in Spotify’s desktop app since March 2024. Premium is required to host or join remotely, while Free users may still participate in some Premium-hosted in-person sessions. For a Spotify-centric group that wants to choose music together, Jam is a convenient fit; for mixed-service groups or remote Free users, its subscription limits are decisive.
