Spotify’s independent-author audiobook program is real, but it is not an open self-publishing service. Launched in March 2025 and later formalized as Spotify Audiobook Selects, it invites authors to submit manuscripts for consideration. Spotify produces and distributes titles it selects, and says selected authors receive a guaranteed advance and royalties. As of August 18, 2026, the latest submission window listed on Spotify’s page is closed. Authors with a finished audiobook can still use the separate, self-service Spotify for Authors route.
What Spotify launched
On March 13, 2025, Spotify announced a publishing initiative for independent authors: a selective program for short-form fiction, not a service where anyone could upload a manuscript and receive an audiobook. Authors submitted stories; Spotify chose which projects to acquire, then handled audiobook production and distribution for accepted work. Spotify later gave the initiative the name Spotify Audiobook Selects. Its first announced cohort comprised 16 audiobooks in October 2025.

That distinction matters. Selects is an acquisition and production opportunity. Spotify for Authors is the separate platform for authors and rights holders who already have a finished audiobook to distribute on Spotify. Spotify’s original launch announcement described both possibilities, but they are not interchangeable.

The program exists, but the latest listed submission window is closed. Spotify’s current Selects page tells authors to check back for the next theme announcement. Do not treat the older launch announcement or a past call for submissions as evidence that applications are open today; the live Selects page is the best place to confirm status and criteria.

Spotify describes Selects as using themed submission windows, with calls expected twice a year, but that cadence does not mean submissions are continuously open or that a specific next window is guaranteed. The program’s themes and eligibility requirements can change from one call to another.
Who was eligible—and why the rules may change
The initial March 2025 call sought English-language short fiction of roughly 10,000–20,000 words in romance, mystery or thriller, and science fiction or fantasy. Cross-genre stories were welcome. The author needed to control the audio rights. Spotify excluded erotica and children’s content and said submissions would be assessed on a rolling basis.
A later Selects call used different criteria: adult or new-adult romance novellas of 10,000–40,000 words, with tropes including enemies-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine, fake marriage, friends-to-lovers, and only one bed. Erotica and children’s content were again excluded.

These are examples of past calls, not permanent eligibility rules. A story that fit the first call may not fit a later one. Spotify says submissions outside the active criteria will not be considered, so check the live theme before preparing an application.
What selected authors receive
Spotify says accepted Selects projects receive professional audiobook production at no cost to the author, a guaranteed advance, industry-standard royalties, marketing and promotion, and distribution beyond Spotify, with potential translations. Spotify’s FAQ says a Selects title is not necessarily Spotify-exclusive: it may also reach other digital retail and library platforms, subject to the author’s agreement.
Those are program-level descriptions, not a published standard contract. Spotify does not disclose a universal advance amount, acceptance rate, or fixed Selects royalty percentage on the public page. The agreement governs the actual rights, royalty calculation, term, territories, payment schedule, distribution, and other obligations. “Wide distribution” does not establish that every retailer, library service, territory, or translation will be included in every deal.

How a Selects submission works
- Check the current theme and status. Start at Spotify’s Audiobook Selects page; do not rely on an old call.
- Confirm fit. Check the active genre, audience, word count, language, and exclusions. A full-length novel or a manuscript outside the requested theme may not qualify.
- Verify audio rights. You need the rights required for the submission and any eventual agreement. If a publisher, producer, narrator, or another party controls audio rights, resolve that before submitting.
- Submit through Spotify’s designated form. Sending a manuscript does not guarantee selection or a response.
- Review any offer carefully. Spotify says it will contact authors it is interested in and enter into an agreement with selected authors. Read the contract before committing.
Spotify’s FAQ says submissions are assessed on a rolling basis and that an author who has not heard back within 12 weeks can assume Spotify has decided not to proceed. Treat that as Spotify’s response guidance, not a promise that every applicant will receive a personal reply by a deadline.

Spotify says a story already published in print or ebook may be submitted if it has never been published in audio and the author still controls the necessary rights. The public FAQ also says authors may promote, market, and distribute the work in other formats and on other platforms, subject to the agreement.
That does not settle every rights question. A contract may impose terms that affect audio exploitation, territories, translations, or other uses. Authors should assess the actual agreement rather than assume that the public FAQ overrides its terms.

Spotify for Authors also offers author tools and analytics. Directly uploading there does not automatically send a book to every audiobook retailer. Spotify’s support page explains the separate Spotify for Authors and Voices by INaudio paths. Authors who want broader distribution should compare that option with other distributors and check each service’s terms.

Spotify’s Spotify for Authors Distribution Terms, last updated May 4, 2026, describe two payment models:
- A-la-carte purchases: the author or rights holder receives 50% of the suggested retail price set for the audiobook, under the terms.
- Subscription listening: royalties come from a Spotify-defined market-level revenue pool. A title’s share is based on its pro-rata share of audiobook consumption as determined under Spotify’s terms.
The subscription model is not a fixed amount per sale, minute, or listening hour in the published terms. Do not project earnings using a guaranteed per-listen rate unless the applicable agreement actually provides one. The 50% figure applies to the stated a-la-carte model, not automatically to subscription listening or Selects contracts.

Rights and contract points to check
Before accepting a Selects offer—or choosing a direct-distribution route—make sure you understand:
- whether audio rights are exclusive or non-exclusive, and for which languages and territories;
- the contract term, renewal provisions, and how rights revert;
- who controls narrator selection, production decisions, and approval of the finished recording;
- the advance amount, payment schedule, whether it is recoupable, and how royalties are calculated;
- what “marketing and promotion” commits Spotify to do, versus what remains discretionary;
- who controls translations and any adaptation or derivative-format rights;
- what happens if production is delayed, a title is not released, or the project is discontinued;
- the author’s warranties and indemnities, including permissions for third-party text, music, sound effects, or other material;
- how to request removal and what access may continue after a title is withdrawn.
The public Selects page does not provide a universal contract or standard advance. Get the full agreement and evaluate it in light of your existing publishing and audio-rights commitments.
Removal and changing distribution plans
Under Spotify’s direct-distribution terms, an author or company may ask Spotify to stop distributing audiobook content. Spotify says it will make commercially reasonable efforts to remove it within 30 business days, subject to exceptions. Previously purchased a-la-carte access may continue, and subscription listeners who accessed a title before removal may retain access for as long as Spotify considers commercially reasonable. Removal is therefore not necessarily immediate or a complete erasure of prior access.
Which route makes sense?
- Consider Selects if you have a short manuscript that matches an active theme, control its audio rights, want Spotify to arrange production, and are comfortable with an editorial selection process and contract-specific terms. It is not a dependable production plan unless your manuscript is accepted.
- Consider Spotify for Authors if you already have a finished audiobook, want a non-exclusive Spotify channel, and are prepared to manage or have managed production, metadata, and audio quality. Digital-voice narration is a separate self-publishing possibility, not a Selects production promise.
- Compare distributors if your strategy depends on reaching several retailers or library services. Spotify’s direct upload is not universal distribution; INaudio is an optional additional route, with its own workflow and terms.
The central trade-off is straightforward: Selects can reduce production cost and workload, but selection is uncertain and the deal governs your rights and control. Self-publishing avoids an editorial gate and offers a direct, non-exclusive Spotify path, but you must bring the finished audio and make your own distribution decisions.
