Spotify has raised its U.S. Premium prices again. Individual subscribers now pay $12.99 per month instead of $11.99; Duo and Family each increased by $2 per month, while Student increased by $1. The new charge does not begin for everyone on one universal date: Spotify says affected subscribers receive notice by email and generally get a one-month grace period before the higher price applies on their next relevant billing date.
Spotify Premium’s new U.S. prices
Spotify announced the change on January 15, 2026. The announcement covered the United States, Estonia, and Latvia, but the figures below are specifically for the U.S. market. Spotify’s current U.S. Premium page lists these monthly prices:

The annual figures assume 12 monthly payments and exclude sales tax, local taxes, payment-provider charges, and any special billing arrangement. In percentage terms, the increases are approximately 8.3% for Individual, 11.8% for Duo, 10% for Family, and 16.7% for Student.

The announcement date and your actual price-change date are different. Spotify’s price-update guidance says affected subscribers receive an email explaining the change and have one month to cancel before the new price takes effect.

The higher rate is generally connected to your next applicable billing cycle after that notification period. Two U.S. subscribers may therefore see the new charge on different dates, depending on when they joined Spotify or last changed their billing arrangements. Reports describing the change as beginning for everyone in February 2026 can be misleading if they imply one universal billing day.
To find your personal date and amount:
- Sign in to Spotify.
- Open your account page.
- Review the billing information and next billing date.
- Check Spotify’s price-change email or the price shown in your account.
- If you plan to cancel or change plans, do it before the next billing date.
Your final charge may be higher than the advertised figure if tax applies. Subscribers billed through Apple, Google, a telecom company, or another partner may also need to manage the subscription through that provider rather than directly through Spotify.
What each plan includes
Premium Individual: $12.99 per month
Individual provides one Premium account. Spotify’s current U.S. page also lists 15 hours per month of audiobook listening from its subscriber audiobook catalog. This is the straightforward option for one person who wants ad-free Premium music, offline listening, and the rest of Spotify’s paid features.

Premium Duo: $18.99 per month
Duo provides two Premium accounts. Spotify describes it for couples living at the same address. The plan manager receives the listed audiobook listening benefit; it should not be read as 15 audiobook hours automatically applying to both members.
At the advertised price, two eligible users would pay about $9.50 per person per month if they split the bill evenly. That comparison only makes sense when the users meet Spotify’s household eligibility requirements.

Premium Family: $21.99 per month
Family supports up to six Premium accounts and includes parental controls. Spotify’s page lists the audiobook benefit for the plan manager, not for every member. Family is intended for members residing at the same address.
Before tax, the monthly cost works out to approximately $3.67 per person with six eligible users, $5.50 with four, or $7.33 with three. Those are mathematical illustrations, not permission to share an account outside Spotify’s rules.

Student offers one verified Premium account at a discounted rate. The U.S. offer also includes Hulu subject to eligibility and the terms of the offer. A school email address alone should not be treated as a guarantee of eligibility: Spotify’s verification requirements apply, and the offer can have additional conditions.
Why Spotify says it raised the prices
In its January 2026 announcement, Spotify said the adjustment reflects the value of its service and its ability to continue benefiting artists and creators. That is Spotify’s stated rationale, not evidence that the entire increase is passed directly to artists as royalties.
The company’s announcement does not identify a specific cost item as the cause. Claims that the increase was specifically driven by lossless audio, operating costs, or another individual factor should therefore be treated as outside analysis rather than confirmed Spotify reasoning.

This is Spotify’s third U.S. increase since 2023

- 2026: Individual moved to $12.99, Duo to $18.99, Family to $21.99, and Student to $6.99 as affected subscribers reached the relevant billing cycles after notification.
That sequence is why independent coverage describes the January 2026 announcement as Spotify’s third U.S. price increase since 2023. It does not mean every country has followed the same schedule or has the same prices.
What can you do if you do not want to pay more?
Check whether another Spotify plan fits
An Individual subscriber who qualifies can investigate Student. Two people paying separately for Individual may find Duo cheaper, while a household with several eligible members may find Family more economical. The savings depend on actual household use: paying for unused places does not automatically make Family the best value.
Spotify’s support page directs subscribers who do not want the new price to check the website for other eligible plans. Plan changes can have their own timing and eligibility rules, so review the offer shown in your account before confirming a switch.
Use Spotify Free
Spotify also maintains a free, ad-supported tier. It may suit people who listen occasionally and can accept advertising and fewer Premium controls. It is less suitable for anyone who depends on uninterrupted playback, offline downloads, or full on-demand control.

Use a gift card only for the plan it supports
Spotify says gift cards can still be redeemed even if they were purchased at a lower price, but they apply only to Premium Individual. A gift card is not a general way to prepay Duo, Family, or Student.
Cancel before the next billing date
Spotify says subscribers can cancel at any time, but cancellation should be completed before the next billing date if the goal is to avoid the next charge. Canceling after a payment has been processed may not reverse that billing cycle’s charge.
Premium access generally continues through the period already paid for. Downloaded music is not a permanent ownership right, so offline downloads may stop being available after Premium ends. Playlists and saved library content are associated with the account and may remain when returning to the free tier, but users should not assume every feature behaves identically after cancellation. Preserve or export any information that is important before changing services.

Spotify says trial users receive one month at the original price after the trial ends; the new plan price applies after that additional period. Promotional rates may have separate end dates and terms, so an introductory price should not be assumed to continue indefinitely.

Apple, Google, telecom, and other partner-billed subscriptions can follow different account-management steps. If Spotify does not show the cancellation controls you expect, check the provider that appears on your receipt or payment statement. Regional pricing also varies: the U.S. prices in this article should not be applied to other countries.

Should you keep Spotify Premium?
Keeping the subscription is easier to justify if you rely on Spotify’s existing playlists, recommendations, social features, device integrations, offline listening, or audiobook allowance. Duo and Family can remain relatively inexpensive per person when they are used by enough eligible people at the same address.
A plan change deserves closer consideration if you rarely listen offline, have an eligible Student account, are paying for two separate Individual plans in one household, or have several household members who can legitimately use Family. Spotify Free may be enough for occasional listeners.
Switching to Apple Music, YouTube Music or YouTube Premium, or TIDAL is another legitimate option, but current prices and comparable features should be checked directly before assuming a rival is cheaper. The practical question is not simply which service has the lowest headline price; it is whether the new service replaces the playlists, catalog access, device support, family arrangements, and other features you actually use.

The bottom line
For U.S. subscribers, the increase is $1 per month for Individual and Student and $2 per month for Duo and Family. The new price is not charged to every subscriber on one fixed day. Look at Spotify’s notification email, account billing page, and next billing date, then change plans or cancel before that date if the higher bill is not worthwhile for you.
