Spotify and Samsung’s March 8, 2019 partnership expansion put Spotify on millions of new Samsung mobile devices and offered six months of Premium to some eligible U.S. buyers. It built on a broader deal announced in 2018 to connect Spotify with Samsung’s phones, Bixby voice assistant, TVs, tablets, watches and other services. Neither preinstallation nor the trial applied to every Samsung owner. The announcements that followed added more device-specific features, but they should not be mistaken for part of the 2019 expansion.
What the March 2019 announcement actually changed
Spotify described the March 8 announcement as an expansion of the partnership it had made with Samsung the previous August. Its most concrete change was distribution: Spotify said the app would come pre-installed on millions of new Samsung mobile devices globally. The named devices included the Galaxy S10, S10+, S10e and S10 5G, the Galaxy Fold, and select Galaxy A-series phones. The announcement also said availability could vary by region and carrier, so this was never a promise that every Samsung phone would arrive with Spotify.
For eligible consumers in the United States, the announcement included a separate promotion: six months of Spotify Premium with select Samsung devices, subject to terms and redemption. The app being present on a phone and a Premium trial being available were two distinct benefits. Spotify’s 2019 announcement and its U.S. trial terms describe the historical offer; neither establishes that the promotion is available now.
In practical terms, preinstallation was mainly a shortcut: a buyer could discover Spotify during setup instead of searching an app store. It did not automatically create a Spotify account, make Premium free, or guarantee that the app could not be removed. It also did not mean that all Samsung models, carriers or countries were covered.

How the deal developed
- August 9, 2018 — The foundation: Spotify and Samsung said Spotify would be Samsung’s “go-to music service provider.” Their plan included account linking during device setup and closer connections among Spotify, Bixby, Samsung Music, SmartThings and Samsung hardware. Spotify discussed phones, tablets, TVs, smartwatches and Galaxy Home-related setup and connected-device scenarios. The description came from Spotify’s 2018 interview with CEO Daniel Ek. “Go-to” described the partnership’s intended role; it should not be read as proof that Spotify was the exclusive music service across every Samsung product or market.
- March 8, 2019 — More phones and a U.S. trial: Spotify announced preinstallation on millions of new Samsung mobile devices, named several Galaxy models, and outlined the six-month Premium offer for eligible U.S. buyers.
- February 11, 2020 — Device-specific additions: Spotify highlighted new Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S20 family and Galaxy Z Flip, along with Galaxy Buds+ integration and Bixby Routines that could trigger playlists. These were later developments, not features introduced by the March 2019 announcement. See Spotify’s 2020 device announcement.
- June 14, 2021 — Wider stated preinstallation scope: Spotify said preinstallation would continue on new Galaxy S, A, M and F phones released that year, as well as Galaxy tablets and Samsung Smart TVs. The announcement also discussed a three-month offer for eligible users. That was another time- and eligibility-bound promotion, not a standing benefit for Samsung owners. See the 2021 announcement.
- August 16, 2022 — A separate listening feature: Spotify described a Group Session option through Google Meet on Android phones. A host could start a session from Meet’s three-dot menu and invite up to eight friends; participants listened using their own Spotify Premium accounts. This was not a Samsung-only feature or part of the 2019 announcement. Details are in Spotify’s 2022 post.
This sequence matters: the partnership was an evolving set of integrations and promotions, not one feature bundle delivered to every Samsung device at once.
What integration meant for Samsung users
The aim was to make Spotify easier to find and use across Samsung’s ecosystem. Account linking could reduce setup friction; Samsung Music and SmartThings were part of the 2018 integration vision; and selected devices and software could connect Spotify with voice control, routines, TVs, tablets, watches or audio accessories. The precise experience depended on the product and its software. An announcement that an integration was planned or available on selected hardware is not a guarantee it works on every device today.

Bixby is a good example of the distinction. Spotify describes voice control on certain Samsung Galaxy models, listing the Galaxy Note8, Galaxy S8 and newer devices on its Bixby support page. That is not a promise that every Bixby command works on every phone. Model, region, language, software and account setup can all matter. If a command fails, check that Spotify is installed and signed in, update the relevant apps and device software, and consult current support information for the specific model. A historical partnership announcement cannot confirm that a feature remains available on a particular device in 2026.
Premium trials were promotions, not part of preinstallation
The 2019 six-month offer was for eligible U.S. consumers buying select devices under separate terms. Spotify’s terms specifically refer to newly purchased Galaxy S10 models with the pre-installed Spotify application. Eligibility rules and redemption mattered; simply owning a Samsung phone did not qualify someone automatically. Later Spotify announcements described different offers, including three months for some eligible users, with their own conditions.

Trials can be limited to new Premium subscribers or people who have not redeemed a similar offer before, and a trial may convert to a paid plan unless cancelled under its terms. Read the offer’s current conditions before redeeming and note its end date and renewal terms. Do not rely on an old announcement or assume an offer is still active. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page shows current plan information, but prices and introductory offers can change and differ by country.
Checking a Samsung phone today
The historical announcements do not establish which current Galaxy models come with Spotify or qualify for a trial. To check your own device without assuming eligibility:

- If Spotify is missing, search for it in Google Play or the Galaxy Store and install it from an official store. A missing app may mean the model or market was not included, it was removed or disabled, or the phone is refurbished or second-hand.
- Open Spotify and sign in or create an account. If a Samsung feature asks you to link accounts, follow that device’s setup flow; account linking is not the same as receiving Premium.
- If you want to try Bixby control, test a simple playback request only after confirming that the model and region are supported. Commands and menus can vary with software versions.
- For a trial, check the offer displayed in Spotify or the relevant Samsung promotion channel, then read the terms for model, country, carrier, purchase date and prior-trial restrictions.
- If an integration is unavailable, update Spotify, Bixby and Samsung software, then check their current support pages. There is no universal menu path that can be guaranteed across every Galaxy model and software version.
Who benefits most?
The arrangement is most useful if you already use Spotify and are buying a Samsung device anyway: the app may be easier to discover, and supported integrations can make playback more convenient across devices you own. It is less compelling as a reason to choose a phone by itself. Spotify works on many non-Samsung devices too, and preinstallation does not improve the music catalog or make Premium compulsory.

The commercial logic ran in both directions: Samsung could offer a more connected entertainment experience, while Spotify gained prominent placement and a path to reach Galaxy buyers. For a user, that translates mainly into convenience and occasional, conditional promotions—not a universal subscription entitlement.
What is confirmed in 2026—and what is not
The cited first-party announcements document the partnership’s history through 2022. They do not confirm that every feature, preinstallation arrangement or free-trial offer remains active on every Samsung device in August 2026. Check current Spotify and Samsung support or offer information for a specific model and country rather than treating a 2019 device list as a present-day compatibility guide.
