Spoilers for Split, Unbreakable, and Glass. Split ends with two distinct reveals: Kevin’s Beast is treated as a real superhuman threat in the film’s fictional world, and a closing diner scene reveals that David Dunn—Bruce Willis’s character from Unbreakable—exists in the same story universe. The second reveal turns Kevin’s story into a bridge between the films.
What happens at the end of Split?
Kevin Wendell Crumb, played by James McAvoy, has 23 known personalities, according to the premise in Universal Pictures’ official film synopsis. As the climax unfolds, the personality known as the Beast emerges as a physically extraordinary danger. The film presents this as more than a performance or a story Kevin is telling; it is a heightened, supernatural turn within the thriller’s fictional world. TIME’s discussion of the ending describes this apparent superhuman reveal.

Casey Cooke survives her encounter with the Beast. The film connects his decision to spare her with her history of abuse. That is the story’s dramatic and moral logic, not a factual account of trauma or dissociative identity disorder.
What is the final twist?
After the main events, the film cuts to a diner. The Unbreakable score is heard, then Bruce Willis appears as David Dunn. The Independent’s ending coverage identifies the appearance and the musical cue as the reveal that links the films.

#1 Best Overall
The scene does not reveal that David caused Kevin’s story or explain every connection between them. Its point is broader: David Dunn exists in the same world as Kevin, so Split is not an isolated story. The ending confirms a shared narrative with Unbreakable, a connection also discussed in Rotten Tomatoes’ oral history.
Why are there two reveals?
The Beast changes how Kevin’s story reads
The Beast reveal answers the immediate question of what Kevin’s most dangerous identity represents. Rather than resolving the climax as an ordinary thriller about a person pretending to have extraordinary abilities, the film makes the threat physically real within its own heightened world.

David Dunn changes the scale of the story
David’s appearance answers a different question: where does Kevin’s story fit? The diner scene expands the film’s scope from a contained character thriller to part of the world established by Unbreakable. The Beast is a twist about the nature of the threat; David is the twist about the universe the story inhabits.
How does Glass continue the story?
Glass brings together characters from Unbreakable and Split, continuing the connected story. Shyamalan discussed the ending and continuation in a Mandatory spoiler interview; the connection is also covered in the Rotten Tomatoes oral history. For story order, watch Unbreakable before Split, then Glass.

What the ending does—and does not—say about DID
Split uses a fictional, heightened depiction of dissociative identity disorder and trauma to build a thriller. The Beast’s powers, the film’s portrayal of identity, and its idea that suffering grants unusual abilities are elements of that fiction—not clinical information about real people with DID. The story’s link between Casey’s abuse history and her survival should likewise be understood as a character-and-plot choice, not a general claim about trauma.
