Spellbound pairs a fairy-tale adventure with a more intimate story about a teenager trying to reconnect with parents she no longer understands. Rachel Zegler gives the film a strong musical center, while its most affecting idea is that repairing a family takes effort from more than one side. The film’s emotional ambitions are clearer than its pacing, but its fantasy conceit gives the family conflict an accessible shape.
What is Spellbound about?
Directed by Vicky Jenson, Spellbound follows Princess Ellian on the eve of her fifteenth birthday. A spell turns her parents, Queen Ellsmere and King Solon, into monsters, and when they escape the palace, Ellian has to find a way to reverse the curse while protecting her family and kingdom. The setup is a classic fairy-tale emergency; beneath it is a familiar adolescent problem: how to live with parents who can feel distant, frustrating, or changed.
Jenson described the story as being about the “alienation that can happen as we grow up” and the steps parents and children take toward better understanding. That framing gives the film a useful emotional compass, though it is the characters’ choices—not the allegory alone—that have to make the family story convincing.
Does the family story work?
The monster spell externalizes a family in crisis. Ellian’s parents are physically transformed, but the more meaningful change is the distance between them and their daughter. The fantasy gives that distance a visible, comic form, allowing the film to move between peril and humor without losing sight of its central relationship.

The idea is strongest when the adventure makes room for Ellian’s perspective: she is not simply solving a magical puzzle, but trying to restore a family life that has become difficult to recognize. At times, the broad fantasy machinery competes with that quieter emotional thread. The film’s tenderness is therefore a quality it reaches for rather than sustains evenly; its most compelling moments come when the spectacle serves the relationships instead of crowding them out.
Rachel Zegler and the voice cast
Zegler voices Ellian, and her singing is a central draw. The role asks her to carry both the musical lift and the character’s uncertainty, giving the princess more to do than react to the spell. Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem voice Queen Ellsmere and King Solon, respectively, while John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane, Tituss Burgess, and Dee Bradley Baker round out the ensemble. Lithgow also voices Flink after a body-swap spell.

The ensemble helps the story shift between comedy and family drama, although the film’s emotional focus stays with Ellian and her parents. Zegler’s vocal performance gives the songs a natural anchor; the dramatic material is most effective when it lets her play Ellian as a teenager negotiating a difficult relationship, rather than only as the heroine of a quest.

Alan Menken composed the score, with lyrics by Glenn Slater. Netflix’s film guide reports nine original songs; Menken’s official page lists these titles:

The listed titles include the reprise and reflect Menken’s full song list; Netflix describes the film as having nine original songs. The musical numbers give the characters room to express feelings that the adventure plot might otherwise hurry past. Their success depends on whether a song deepens a relationship or moves the story along, rather than simply pausing it. Zegler’s voice makes the musical format a particular strength, even when the film’s pacing keeps the emotional material from landing with equal force throughout.
Animation, tone, and pacing
Spellbound uses colorful fantasy imagery, comic transformations, and fairy-tale peril to make its family subject approachable. That combination gives the film an inviting surface, but it also creates a balancing act: the larger the adventure becomes, the more carefully the story must return to Ellian’s personal stakes. The contrast is part of the film’s appeal, though it can leave the family drama feeling less developed than its premise promises.

For viewers drawn to animated musicals, the Menken-Slater songs and Zegler’s performance offer a clear reason to watch. For families, the parent-child conflict gives the spectacle something more substantial to explore than a quest to break a spell. The film is gentler and more emotionally minded than its monster premise might suggest, but it is not a uniformly affecting drama.
