SoundCloud did add broad AI-related language to its terms, but the headline needs a historical qualification. Language introduced in a February 2024 terms update appeared to allow uploaded content to “inform, train, develop” or serve as input to AI and machine-intelligence technologies. After public backlash in May 2025, SoundCloud said the wording was too broad and clarified that generative AI models intended to replicate or synthesize a user’s voice, music, or likeness require explicit consent.
That is not the same as proof that SoundCloud trained a generative model on users’ music. The available evidence separates three questions: what the terms appeared to permit, what SoundCloud said it had actually done, and what its current public policy promises.
The short answer
- Yes: SoundCloud’s terms contained broad AI-related language, reportedly added in February 2024.
- No: the available evidence does not prove that SoundCloud trained a generative AI model on user uploads.
- SoundCloud’s explanation: the language was intended to cover internal systems for recommendations, content organization, fraud detection, discovery, and content identification.
- After backlash: on May 14, 2025, CEO Eliah Seton said the wording was too broad and unclear.
- Current position: SoundCloud’s public AI-partnership language and current terms say that generative AI training intended to replicate or synthesize a user’s voice, music, or likeness requires explicit consent through an opt-in mechanism.
The most accurate description is therefore: SoundCloud appeared to grant itself broad AI-related permissions through its terms, then narrowed and clarified the policy after criticism. It did not simply reverse every use of machine learning on the platform.

The disputed language stated that uploaded content could be used to “inform, train, develop” or serve as input to AI or machine-intelligence technologies “as part of and for providing the services.”

That wording was broad because it did not clearly distinguish between very different activities:
- Generative music or voice-model training.
- Recommendation and playlist systems.
- Search, tagging, classification, and content organization.
- Fraud detection and moderation.
- Content identification and rights-management tools.
- SoundCloud’s internal systems and access by outside companies.
For artists, the problem was not only what SoundCloud intended. It was what the contract appeared to authorize. The language did not plainly state whether generative training was excluded, whether participation was opt-in, whether artists would be compensated, or whether consent could later be withdrawn. SoundCloud’s current Terms of Use should be read rather than relying on older screenshots or summaries.
When did the change happen?

The available evidence does not establish that it did.
SoundCloud said it had never used artist content to train AI models, had not developed AI tools using that content, and did not allow third parties to scrape SoundCloud content for AI training. It also said it had technical safeguards, including a “no AI” tag, intended to prohibit unauthorized use.

Those are SoundCloud’s representations, not independent proof that no uploaded material was ever used in any machine-learning process. The distinction matters:
- Contractual scope: what the terms appeared to permit.
- Company conduct: what SoundCloud says it actually did.
- Independent verification: what outside reporting or evidence can establish.
It would be inaccurate to turn the 2025 controversy into a factual claim that SoundCloud trained a text-to-music or voice-cloning model on all user uploads.
What did SoundCloud mean by “AI”?
SoundCloud said the clause was intended to cover machine-learning systems used to operate and improve the service, including:
- Personalized recommendations and playlist generation.
- Artist discovery and programming.
- Content organization and tagging.
- Fraud detection and moderation.
- Improvements to content identification.
The company acquired music-intelligence firm Musiio in 2022 and described Musiio-related systems as tools for discovery and organization rather than generative-model training.
“AI training” is therefore not synonymous with training a system that creates new songs or clones a singer. A platform can train or improve models for classification, ranking, moderation, search, or rights detection without using the recordings to build a generative music model. SoundCloud’s defense relied on this distinction, but its original terms did not explain it clearly enough.

What changed after the backlash?
On May 14, 2025, SoundCloud CEO Eliah Seton said the wording was too broad and unclear. The company revised its terms to clarify that it would not use user content to train generative AI models intended to replicate or synthesize:
- A user’s voice.
- A user’s music.
- A user’s likeness.
The current language frames this as requiring explicit consent through an opt-in mechanism. SoundCloud’s AI Partnerships page similarly states that it will not train generative AI models on user content without explicit consent.
This is a narrower promise than “SoundCloud prohibits all AI processing.” It specifically addresses generative models designed to replicate or synthesize voice, music, or likeness. It does not necessarily prohibit every machine-learning use connected to recommendations, classification, fraud detection, moderation, or content identification.
What the current policy still does not answer
The public wording is clearer, but it leaves important practical questions unresolved:
- Is consent requested per track, per account, or across the service?
- Can consent be revoked, and what happens to a model already trained?
- Are backups, cached files, embeddings, fingerprints, or other derived data deleted?
- Does consent cover SoundCloud only or named partners as well?
- Are labels, distributors, and individual uploaders treated differently?
- Does “music” refer to the sound recording, the composition, or both?
- How are featured artists, session musicians, producers, and vocalists protected?
- Are recommendation and moderation models treated differently from generative models?
- Does a private or restricted track remain available for all internal processing?
The sources establish an explicit-consent commitment for the specified generative uses, but they do not establish a universal account switch that opts every user out of every form of machine learning. SoundCloud’s permissions controls concern content availability and sharing; they should not automatically be described as an AI-training opt-out or a guarantee that content is removed from existing datasets.

Why rights ownership matters
Uploading a track does not necessarily mean owning every right embodied in it. An artist may control the master recording while another party controls the composition, publishing rights, samples, artwork, featured performance, or vocal likeness.
SoundCloud’s Community Guidelines place responsibility on uploaders to obtain the necessary permissions, including for remixes and material belonging to other rightsholders. The current terms also distinguish user content from material supplied under separate rights-holder agreements and state that third-party rights-holder material cannot be used for AI purposes without authorization from the applicable rights holders.
That creates difficult cases: a producer might upload a track containing a label-owned vocal; a distributor might upload music for several clients; or an artist might possess a master but not the performer’s voice or publicity rights. An uploader’s consent cannot automatically resolve every right in a collaborative recording.

The existence of these partnerships does not prove that SoundCloud used user uploads to train those products. SoundCloud presents them as tools for creation, discovery, remixing, credit, and rights protection while separately promising explicit consent for the specified generative-AI training uses.

AI-generated music on SoundCloud
Whether SoundCloud may train on a track is different from whether an artist may upload, distribute, or monetize a track made with AI assistance.
SoundCloud has separate guidance on distributing and monetizing AI-assisted content, and its Community Guidelines prohibit impersonation and misleading metadata, including impersonation through artificial intelligence. Distribution eligibility can change, and the accessible help material does not support treating every AI tool or provider as having the same status. Artists should check the current SoundCloud help guidance before submitting or monetizing a specific release.
Keep these questions separate:
- Platform training: whether SoundCloud or another party may use uploads to develop models.
- AI-assisted creation: whether an artist used AI while making a track.
- Distribution and monetization: whether SoundCloud accepts and pays for that track.
- Impersonation: whether the release imitates a performer or uses misleading metadata.
Practical checklist for artists
- Audit ownership. Confirm your rights in the master, composition, samples, featured performers, vocals, and artwork.
- Read the current documents together. Review the Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, creator agreements, distribution terms, and any label or distributor contract.
- Check permissions. Review track-level availability and linked-service settings, but do not treat restricted availability as a universal AI exclusion.
- Save evidence. Keep copies of relevant terms, consent screens, account notices, and settings, with the date and market recorded.
- Ask for written clarification. Contact SoundCloud support if a project involves sensitive voice, likeness, label, sample, or collaborator rights.
- Do not rely on the “no AI” marker as an absolute guarantee. SoundCloud describes it as a technical safeguard against unauthorized use, not as proof that no unauthorized copy can ever be obtained.
Why the controversy matters
The episode illustrates a broader platform-policy problem: a company’s public explanation may be narrower than the permission suggested by its contract. It also shows why “AI” must be defined before a policy can be evaluated. Recommendation ranking, audio fingerprinting, fraud detection, voice cloning, dataset licensing, and music generation carry different risks and should not be treated as one activity.

SoundCloud’s current promise is more specific than the language that triggered the controversy. But explicit consent for specified generative models does not, by itself, resolve questions about derived data, historical copies, collaborators, geography, revocation, or non-generative machine-learning systems.
