Sophie Grégoire Trudeau said her separation from Justin Trudeau “hurts deeply” in a May 2, 2024, interview on Katie Couric’s Next Question podcast. She also pushed back on the idea that marriage is a success and separation or divorce a failure, describing the family as still bound by love and respect while they work out what comes next.

What Grégoire said about the separation

In the interview, Grégoire reflected on the emotional weight of the split and the labels people attach to relationships. As quoted in a PEOPLE report republished by Yahoo, she said: “It hurts deeply, because in a way we have these two words in our language. You know, marriage is ‘success.’ Separation and divorce is ‘failure.’”

She described an ongoing family relationship rather than a neatly resolved transition: “We are still bound by love and respect and smiles and tears, and we’re still trying to figure it out. And it’s not perfect, but when you keep things honest, Michael J. Fox said, ‘We’re only as sick as our secrets,’”

That quotation is reported from Grégoire’s interview; it is not presented here as an independently verified quotation from Fox. The available report reproduces excerpts, not a complete transcript, so the remarks should be read in that context.

When Justin and Sophie Trudeau announced their separation

The couple announced their separation on August 2, 2023, after 18 years of marriage. In a statement reproduced by CityNews, the Prime Minister’s Office said they had signed a legal separation agreement and remained a close family, focused on raising their children in a “safe, loving and collaborative environment.”

That announcement and the later podcast interview are distinct moments: the 2023 statement set out the separation and the family’s focus on their children; Grégoire’s 2024 comments described her personal feelings about it. Justin Trudeau’s first public remarks after the announcement included thanks to Canadians for respecting the family’s privacy and said he had spent time with his family focusing on the children, as reported by Global News.

The interview also discussed Grégoire’s book

The Katie Couric conversation also covered Grégoire’s book, Closer Together: Knowing Ourselves, Loving Each Other. Its presence in the interview is relevant to her broader reflections on relationships, but neither the book nor the reported comments establish the private reasons for the couple’s separation.

What the public statements do—and do not—establish

The Prime Minister’s Office statement refers to a legal separation agreement. It does not establish a divorce, and the available reporting does not establish the couple’s current legal status. Neither the statement nor Grégoire’s quoted remarks explain why the couple separated. Those details remain private in the sources cited here.
