Who does Sophia Anne Caruso play in The School for Good and Evil?
Caruso plays Sophie, a golden-haired village seamstress whose ambition is to become a princess. She and her best friend, Agatha, are taken to a school that trains fairy-tale heroes and villains. Sophie is placed in the School for Evil, while Agatha attends the School for Good. Netflix released the film on October 19, 2022; select U.S. theatrical screenings began October 12.
Eight details about Caruso and her roles
1. Sophie is at the center of a story about friendship and fairy-tale opposites
Although Sophie dreams of the princess life associated with fairy-tale heroes, the school’s sorting puts her among the villains. Netflix describes Sophie and Agatha as best friends who find themselves on opposite sides of the school’s good-and-evil divide.
2. The film adapts Soman Chainani’s book series
The School for Good and Evil is based on Chainani’s book series. Readers who want to explore the story beyond the film can start with the books behind the adaptation.

3. Caruso originated Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice on Broadway
Before the Netflix fantasy film, Caruso originated the role of Lydia Deetz in the Broadway musical Beetlejuice. The musical is based on Tim Burton’s 1988 film. Warner Records’ material for the original Broadway cast recording also identifies Caruso as Lydia.
4. She played Brigitta von Trapp in The Sound of Music Live!
Caruso appeared as Brigitta von Trapp in The Sound of Music Live!, with Carrie Underwood as Maria. It is a live television production credit, distinct from her Broadway work and later film roles.
5. She plays Miss Goldenweek in One Piece Season 2
Netflix Tudum’s March 17, 2026 cast guide lists Caruso as Miss Goldenweek. The guide describes the character as Mr. 3’s partner, whose hypnotic paint can control the emotions of people who come into contact with it. Netflix said all eight episodes of Season 2 were available to stream at the time of that guide; availability can change.
6. Her credits span stage, live television, film, and a series
These roles show Caruso in several kinds of productions: she originated a character in a Broadway musical, performed in a live television musical, played the lead role of Sophie in a fantasy film, and joined the cast of a live-action series. The credits establish a range of formats without implying that each role has the same size or prominence.
7. The key Sophie credit is specifically the 2022 Netflix film
Caruso’s Sophie is in the screen adaptation, not the original novel. Keeping that distinction clear helps separate the film’s cast from the book characters’ creators and from performers in other adaptations.
8. Beetlejuice offers a related way to revisit her Broadway role
Warner Records documents an original Broadway cast recording of Beetlejuice featuring Caruso as Lydia. It is a useful companion for readers interested in her stage work; the recording’s current editions and availability may vary.
