Soorarai Pottru is a stirring, romance-led drama about an ordinary man’s dream of making air travel accessible—not a tightly realistic aviation biography. Suriya and Aparna Balamurali give its ambition an affecting emotional centre, though heightened melodrama and a 149-minute runtime sometimes weigh it down. It is best for viewers who want an expansive, uplifting story rather than a nuts-and-bolts account of building an airline.
What is Soorarai Pottru about?
Directed by Sudha Kongara, the 2020 Tamil-language film follows Nedumaaran “Maara” Rajangam (Suriya), the son of a teacher who wants to build an airline ordinary people can afford. The plan pits him against powerful commercial interests, officials and the practical barriers of an industry that demands enormous capital. Friends, family and his community help make the dream a collective effort rather than a tale of one lone genius.
Aviation gives the story its shape, but access is its real subject: who gets to travel, who gets to pursue an unlikely ambition, and whose dignity is taken seriously. The film’s most compelling stakes are often personal, not operational.

Maara’s relationship with Sundari, played by Aparna Balamurali, is the film’s emotional engine. Their chemistry is lively, and the courtship brings humour and warmth to a story otherwise full of setbacks and public confrontations. A bold proposal and Maara’s awkward appeal for financial help show the couple’s playful side without making romance feel detached from the central dream.

More importantly, Sundari is not written as a prize waiting at the end of Maara’s struggle. She has her own independence and contributes practically and emotionally to what he is trying to build. Their partnership helps the film’s aspirational message feel grounded: Maara’s dream becomes more credible when someone can question it, work alongside him and share its risks. The screenplay could still give Sundari more interiority beyond her place in his journey, but she is far more than a passive supporter.
Suriya leads with conviction
Suriya gives Maara an appealing combination of earthy intelligence, impatience and determination. He is convincing in scenes of anger and humiliation, but the performance is strongest when it lets the character be vulnerable—especially in his exchanges with Sundari. His physical intensity and star presence make the film’s rousing moments land.
That presence also has a cost. Maara can seem so forceful and heroic that the story’s idealism becomes difficult to question from within the film. Still, Suriya supplies the energy needed to carry a character whose ambition is meant to fill the screen.

A strong ensemble, a broad opposition
Balamurali is a genuine co-lead in the romance, while Paresh Rawal plays Paresh Goswami, the established airline rival who gives Maara’s ambition a visible adversary. Mohan Babu and the wider cast—including friends, family and villagers—help the project feel rooted in a community. That ensemble presence is one of the film’s useful counterweights to the familiar triumph-of-the-individual formula.
The opposition, however, is drawn broadly. Corporate and bureaucratic obstacles provide momentum, but the film is more interested in their dramatic force than in the complexity of institutions or the people within them. Its conflicts work better as fable than as close observation.
Ambition, not a business case
The premise is immediately legible: make flying affordable, and challenge a system built around exclusivity. Repeated setbacks keep the narrative moving, and the community’s involvement makes the goal feel socially meaningful. The movie understands why the idea matters even when it does not dwell on the mechanics.

That is also its limitation. Launching an airline involves daunting financial and operational realities, but Soorarai Pottru simplifies them in favour of emotional reversals and inspirational momentum. The corporate rivalry and official obstruction can tip into melodrama, and the film sometimes treats determination as a solution to problems that would be more complicated in life. Its emotional truth is stronger than its business realism. Viewers looking for a researched account of Indian entrepreneurship or airline economics should look elsewhere.
Direction, music and visual scale
Kongara moves between romance, family pressures, community life and the public struggle to get Maara’s plan off the ground. She stages the story with vividness and keeps its emotional thread visible even as the obstacles multiply. At times the escalation feels overwrought, but the film has a clear sense of what its dream means to its characters.
Niketh Bomireddy’s cinematography uses a warm brown-and-gold palette that lends the grounded settings a tactile quality, then contrasts them with the promise of flight. G. V. Prakash Kumar’s energetic music helps sustain the film’s forward drive. Together, the visual and musical choices give the story scale; occasionally, that polish also pushes it toward sentimentality.
Is it too long?
At 2 hours 29 minutes (149 minutes), it is a substantial watch. The length accommodates the romance, family and community strands as well as the business conflict, but the momentum is not equally strong throughout. If you enjoy expansive inspirational dramas and big emotional set pieces, the scope may feel satisfying. If you want a brisk aviation thriller or a tightly focused business drama, expect stretches that feel overextended.
Is it a true story?
Soorarai Pottru is loosely inspired by G. R. Gopinath’s aviation career and his memoir Simply Fly, and broadly draws on the story of low-cost airline Air Deccan. It is not a literal biography. The film changes details of its protagonist’s background and personal circumstances, and Maara should not be treated as a one-to-one screen version of Gopinath. Think of it as a fictionalised drama using a real-world entrepreneurial inspiration, not a documentary account.

Verdict
Watch Soorarai Pottru for Suriya’s forceful lead performance, Balamurali’s self-possessed partner, and a romance that gives an ambitious social drama real warmth. Its dream of widening access to the skies is more persuasive than its simplified business plot, and its emotional peaks sometimes run long. But for viewers receptive to heightened, hopeful storytelling, this is a compelling flight—even if it does not always travel by the most realistic route.
