Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opened at No. 1 in North America over December 20–22, 2024, with a settled three-day domestic total of $60,102,146, according to The Numbers. That was less than Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned on its opening weekend, but the third film ultimately led the trilogy in domestic and worldwide lifetime grosses in The Numbers’ franchise data.
What was Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s opening weekend?
The Numbers lists Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s domestic opening weekend, Friday through Sunday, December 20–22, 2024, at $60,102,146. SEGA Corporation rounded the three-day result to $60.1 million in a January 22, 2025, release. The figure is a North American domestic weekend gross, not a worldwide opening.
The Numbers separately lists $6.5 million in Thursday previews. Those previews are not part of the stated Friday–Sunday total.
Why did Sonic 3 finish No. 1?
It opened above its direct weekend competitor, Mufasa: The Lion King. The Associated Press, reporting Comscore’s opening-weekend estimates on December 22, 2024, put Sonic 3 at $62 million and Mufasa at $35 million. Those were contemporary estimates; they differ from The Numbers’ later settled opening figure for Sonic 3.
#1 Best Overall
The films entered the same holiday corridor, but their simultaneous release did not prevent Sonic 3 from taking the top spot. AP quoted Paramount distribution chief Chris Aronson: “We felt strongly that the marketplace could support both movies and we’re certainly holding up our side of the bargain.”
The No. 1 label describes the film’s debut weekend, not a run at the top throughout its release. The Numbers records a second domestic weekend of $37,010,506, down 38%, during which it remained No. 1. It fell to second place on its third weekend.

How did the three Sonic films compare?
The franchise’s results look different depending on whether the comparison is opening weekend or total theatrical gross. The figures below come from The Numbers’ franchise data, accessed in 2026; the first film’s domestic lifetime total has a separate database variation noted below.
| Film | Domestic opening weekend | Domestic lifetime gross | Worldwide lifetime gross | Production budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) | $58,018,348 | $146,066,470 | $302,452,077 | Not stated in the cited franchise comparison |
| Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) | $72,105,176 | $190,872,904 | $403,824,597 | Not stated in the cited franchise comparison |
| Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) | $60,102,146 | $236,115,100 | $489,615,622 | $122 million |
The opening figures show that Sonic 3 debuted below Sonic 2 but above the first film. The lifetime totals tell a different story: in The Numbers’ data, the third film finished with the trilogy’s largest domestic and worldwide grosses.

For the first Sonic the Hedgehog, Box Office Mojo lists a domestic lifetime gross of $148,974,665, rather than The Numbers’ $146,066,470. Box Office Mojo likewise ranks Sonic 3 first in domestic lifetime gross and second in domestic opening among the three films. The databases’ first-film lifetime totals should not be treated as identical.

The Numbers lists a $122 million production budget for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. That is one production-cost figure, not a measure of profit. Box-office gross is not the same as the amount a studio keeps: the budget alone does not account for marketing, distribution expenses, or revenue sharing with cinemas and other parties.

Paramount Global’s Q4 2024 earnings release described the film as “approaching nearly $500 million at the global box office.” That was a contemporaneous milestone, not a precise final total. SEGA later said on January 22, 2025, that the film had reached $425 million worldwide, surpassing the previous film’s $405 million record. The Numbers’ later lifetime listing gives the final worldwide total as $489,615,622.
