Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has two extra scenes: one during the credits introduces Amy Rose and multiple Metal Sonics, and a final scene after the credits implies Shadow survived. The ending itself sees Sonic and Shadow join forces to stop Gerald and Ivo Robotnik’s plan and save Earth.
How Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ends
Sonic and Shadow put aside their conflict and work together against Gerald and Ivo Robotnik’s destructive plan. Sonic’s empathy helps Shadow move beyond his desire for revenge over Maria’s death; in the climax, the pair use their powers to save Earth. Paramount’s official synopsis frames their unexpected alliance as central to the story, while Den of Geek’s ending breakdown describes the resolution.
After the conflict, the film shifts back to a friendly race: Sonic challenges Tails and Knuckles, then runs much farther than expected. That moment leads into the first scene during the credits.
First post-credits scene: Amy Rose and Metal Sonic
Sonic arrives in a New York park and is attacked by a robot resembling him. More Metal Sonic copies soon surround him. Amy Rose appears and helps Sonic, wielding her hammer.

The scene introduces Amy as a potential ally and Metal Sonic as a new mechanical threat, but it does not explain where the copies came from, who created them in this film continuity, or whether the scene involves time travel. Amy Rose and Metal Sonic are established characters from Sonic CD, as noted by Tech Advisor and Den of Geek. Their game history is a reference point, not confirmation that the film is adapting that game’s plot.
Final post-credits scene: Shadow’s return
The scene after the credits shows Shadow’s inhibitor ring at the site of his apparent sacrifice, followed by Shadow himself arriving. The implication is that he survived. The stinger does not show how he escaped death or establish how much he will feature in a future story.

What the scenes suggest—and what remains unknown
The Amy Rose and Metal Sonic reveal points toward new possibilities for future Sonic stories, while Shadow’s appearance leaves the character available for another chapter. Director Jeff Fowler described the creative principle behind choosing characters for the films this way: “I think it’s always: ‘Which character is going to give us something new?’” In the same GamesRadar+ interview, Fowler said the choices reflect where the filmmakers want the world to go and what could make future storytelling feel unique or fresh. That explains the creative approach; it does not confirm a particular sequel plot.
Paramount announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is scheduled for theatrical release on March 19, 2027. The announcement confirms the date, not the sequel’s story. It does not establish that Metal Sonic will be the main villain, explain the first stinger’s timeline, or specify Shadow’s role. The first scene’s mechanics and the Metal Sonics’ origin remain unexplained in the cited scene reporting.

What happens to Robotnik?
Robotnik appears to sacrifice himself, but the ending and its two extra scenes do not confirm whether he survived. Neither stinger establishes his return, so treating one as proof that Robotnik is back goes beyond what the film shows.
