Familiar examples include “Jungle Love,” “The Glamorous Life,” “Manic Monday” and “You’re My Love.” The credits can involve more than songwriting: Prince sometimes supplied a demo, produced the released recording or performed on it, so those roles are worth separating.
What songs did Prince write for other artists?
Prince wrote and recorded material for artists and groups in his circle, including The Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Jill Jones, The Family and Mazarati. The Prince Estate also points to songs he wrote for performers beyond that circle. These examples are a starting point, not a complete catalog: the Estate describes Prince’s body of work as an evolving exploration that includes unreleased recordings. The Prince Estate’s account of Originals provides its curated selection and context.
| Song | Artist or group associated with the recording | What the available source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| “Jungle Love” | The Time | Prince wrote the song; TIME reports that the original credits used the names Jamie Starr and The Starr Company, aliases associated with Prince. TIME’s coverage of Originals |
| “The Glamorous Life” | Sheila E. | The Estate credits Prince as songwriter and says he produced the six-track album under the name the Starr Company. The Estate’s The Glamorous Life page |
| “Manic Monday” | The Bangles | A Prince composition recorded by the group. The Estate says the Bangles album Different Light, which contains the song, reached No. 2 on the pop charts; that is an album-chart claim, not a single-chart position. The Prince Estate’s account of Originals |
| “You’re My Love” | Kenny Rogers | TIME reports that Prince used the pseudonym Joey Coco for the songwriting credit. TIME’s coverage of Originals |
| “Nothing Compares 2 U” | The Family; later widely known through Sinéad O’Connor’s version | Prince wrote it for The Family. Originals includes Prince’s own 1984 recording; the Estate says that recording was issued as a standalone single in 2018. The Prince Estate’s account of Originals |
What is the difference between writing, producing and performing?
A songwriting credit identifies who wrote or co-wrote a song. A production credit concerns how a recording was made; a performance credit identifies who sang or played on the released track. These are distinct contributions, even when Prince was involved in more than one.
Prince’s recordings were sometimes demos used as guides for another artist’s version. In other cases, the demo itself served as the master recording, with instrumental changes and replacement vocals. A version performed by someone else therefore does not automatically mean that person created a wholly separate recording from scratch. The Estate’s account describes both approaches. Sheila E. was a collaborator, not simply a replacement vocalist
The Estate says Prince wrote all six tracks on Sheila E.’s The Glamorous Life and produced the record as the Starr Company. It also describes Sheila as an established percussionist and their relationship as a musical partnership. The record reached No. 1 on the dance charts in 1984, according to the Estate. The Estate’s The Glamorous Life page
Aliases can explain credits, but do not settle every role
Some credits use names associated with Prince. TIME reports that “Jungle Love” was originally credited to Jamie Starr and The Starr Company, and that Joey Coco was the pseudonym used for “You’re My Love.” The Estate identifies the Starr Company as Prince’s production pseudonym on Sheila E.’s album and separately credits him as its songwriter. An alias may clarify a particular credit, but a production credit or association alone is not proof of songwriting. TIME · The Prince Estate

How should you compare Prince’s version with another artist’s?
For any particular song, check the credits and recording history rather than treating every association with Prince as the same kind of contribution. Useful questions are:
- Who is credited as songwriter or co-writer?
- Who first recorded or released the song?
- Was Prince’s demo a guide, or did it become the basis of the released master?
- Did Prince also produce or perform on the other artist’s released track?
- Is the recording a song written for an artist, a later cover, a co-written song, or a production or performance credit without songwriting?
Graffiti Bridge offers one example of overlapping roles: the Estate describes it as the first time Prince included songs he wrote and produced for other artists on one of his own albums, naming The Time’s performances and Tevin Campbell’s “Round and Round.” The songs can appear in a Prince-led project while still being performed by another artist.
