What “wrote entirely by themselves” means
A sole songwriting credit identifies the artist as the only credited songwriter on a particular released song. It does not establish that no one else contributed to its production, performance, arrangement, or recording. Songwriting and production are distinct roles, and a prominent artist’s involvement in one does not prove sole authorship in the other.
Spotify for Artists explains that songwriter credits help listeners identify writers and can make writers more discoverable. The Recording Academy’s Song of the Year category likewise recognizes songwriting achievement. Those credits are useful evidence of credited authorship, not a complete account of how every creative decision was made in a studio.
The strongest example: Taylor Swift’s Speak Now
TIME reports that Swift wrote Speak Now (2010) “without the help of any other songwriters,” making the album a particularly clear album-level example of a major pop star writing without co-writers. That supports a claim about the album’s songwriting approach; a claim about a specific track or edition should still be checked against the relevant release’s credits.

Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is a related rerecorded album, but the fact that it exists does not establish whether any individual track’s songwriting credits differ from or match those on the original. Treat each release version as its own credit check.
How to verify a song’s writing credits
- Identify the exact release. Note whether you mean the original album, a rerecording, a deluxe edition, or a single. Credits attach to released works and versions.
- Check the track-level songwriter line. Look at the release’s liner notes or an authoritative catalog credit. A sole artist name supports calling that song solely credited to the artist; multiple names indicate co-writing credit.
- Keep the roles separate. Do not treat producer, performer, or recording credits as songwriter credits. A song can have a sole songwriter and still involve many collaborators in making the recording.
- Use award records as corroboration, not as a complete catalog. The Recording Academy’s Song of the Year pages can confirm songwriter names for recognized entries, but they do not establish an artist’s full discography.
Streaming services may present credits differently over time. Spotify announced songwriter-credit display on its desktop app, but the interface can change; consult the current track credits rather than relying on a particular menu path or display.

A dependable list of solo-written songs needs track-level evidence tied to specific editions. A compiled list can help identify candidates, but each entry should be verified against the relevant release’s authoritative credits before it is presented as fact. Without that check, an artist’s reputation for songwriting—or a general account of their creative process—is not enough.
Adele has described her approach by saying, “I write a song from beginning to end,” and has also said, “I’m not precious about writing credits-it’s whatever makes the best song.” These remarks offer context about process and attitude; they do not establish that any particular Adele song has a sole songwriter credit.

There is no reliable percentage or total here for how often major pop stars write songs alone. A precise count would require a defined artist set, a consistent rule for versions, and verified credits for every track counted.
