Its strongest idea is that legacy matters most when it helps a new character understand herself—not simply when it brings familiar names back on screen.

Spoiler-free review
The episode’s central connection is purposeful: Sam, a Kasqian emissary, studies Benjamin Sisko, whose own life became entwined with the Prophets and the emissary role. That parallel gives the Deep Space Nine legacy material a character-driven reason to be here. Rather than treating Sisko’s story as a trivia stop, the episode makes Sam’s curiosity part of her effort to understand the responsibility she carries toward her Kasqian creators.

That focus also creates the episode’s main risk. A beloved legacy character can easily take attention away from the new lead. Here, the premise points back toward Sam’s development, and IGN’s review praised the story as one of empowerment and acceptance rather than nostalgia for its own sake. That is one critic’s reading, not a consensus: the episode’s listed reviews range from 3/5 at TV Fanatic to 8/10 at IGN. IGN review; TV Fanatic review; AIPT review
The episode also asks viewers to bring very different amounts of franchise history. AIPT’s reviewer considered the Sisko material accessible to people unfamiliar with Deep Space Nine, while longtime viewers have more context for the unresolved ending the story revisits. The callback is most effective when it deepens Sam’s question, not when familiarity with the older series becomes a requirement for following her arc.

Full recap: Sam follows Sisko’s trail
Spoilers for “Series Acclimation Mil” follow.
An old mystery with a new purpose
Sam sets out to understand what happened to Benjamin Sisko. In Deep Space Nine, Sisko joined the Prophets and disappeared into the wormhole, leaving his fate open at the end of the series. In this episode, the question is not only what became of him; it is what his experience might mean to Sam as she works out her own place as an emissary.
Coverage by GamesRadar reports that the episode indicates Sisko remains with the Prophets, while leaving the larger possibilities around his future open because of the Prophets’ relationship with time. That is a meaningful return to the old mystery, but not a definitive answer to every question about Sisko’s fate. GamesRadar episode coverage

Jake Sisko and Dax extend the DS9 connection
The legacy story includes Cirroc Lofton returning as Jake Sisko, Benjamin Sisko’s son, according to AIPT’s episode coverage. AIPT also reports a reveal involving Tawny Newsome as the current Dax host. These appearances widen the episode’s link to Deep Space Nine while keeping Sam’s investigation at the center of the premise. AIPT episode coverage
Nahla’s parallel ritual story
The other story follows Chancellor Nahla Ake as she agrees to help a fellow chancellor with an elaborate alien ritual. That parallel is part of the episode’s official synopsis. The available episode descriptions establish the setup but do not provide enough detail to responsibly recount the ritual’s sequence or mechanics.

What the episode adds to Sisko’s story—and what it leaves unresolved
“Series Acclimation Mil” revisits the ending of Deep Space Nine without turning that revisit into a complete explanation of Sisko’s future. GamesRadar’s account supports the narrower reading that he remains with the Prophets, but the episode’s larger time-related implications leave room for questions. That restraint suits a story about Sam’s search: Sisko’s experience can offer a point of comparison without becoming a simple instruction manual for her own path.
The emotional payoff therefore depends on how much weight the viewer gives the parallel between the two emissaries. The continuity is meaningful because it reflects Sam’s self-discovery; it is less compelling if the return to Sisko is treated as an end in itself. Critics differ on how well the episode balances that legacy with its coming-of-age tone, as the contrasting ratings illustrate.
