In a straight race, Jay Garrick has the stronger stated speed benchmark in the official sources cited here—but that is an inference, not a definitive result for every version of Sonic and the Flash. SEGA describes Sonic as “the world’s fastest supersonic hedgehog,” while DC says Jay Garrick can reach speeds approaching the speed of light through the Speed Force. Those descriptions come from separate fictional universes, not a shared test. The answer also changes with the characters’ versions, forms, and the rules of the race.
What do the official descriptions say?
SEGA’s Sonic Origins online manual calls Sonic “the world’s fastest supersonic hedgehog.” That is official character framing, not a precise maximum-speed measurement.
DC’s official Jay Garrick profile says: “By tapping into the extra-dimensional Speed Force, Jay can move at speeds approaching the speed of light.” This benchmark is specifically about Jay; it should not be treated as a single official speed rating for every character who has been the Flash.
Neither source reports a head-to-head result or measures both characters on the same course. “Supersonic” and “approaching the speed of light” are qualitative descriptions, so they cannot by themselves establish a precise race time.

Who is the Flash in this matchup?
The Flash is a mantle held by multiple characters, including Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, and Wally West. The cited speed statement belongs to Jay Garrick alone. A comparison with Barry or Wally would need to specify that character and support the comparison with evidence about that version; Jay’s profile is not a universal Flash stat sheet.
Which Sonic counts?
SEGA’s manual gives a general description of Sonic. It does not rank every version across games, comics, and screen adaptations, or compare standard Sonic with powered-up forms. For a fair answer, name the continuity and form being used rather than treating all portrayals as interchangeable.

Does the race allow Speed Force powers?
A linear footrace and an unrestricted contest are different matchups. DC’s explanation of the Speed Force describes it as a source of abilities that can extend beyond running, including travel through space and time. It also notes that the concept has shifted across stories and writers. Alex Jaffe’s DC.com explainer on the Speed Force puts its narrative role this way: “The Speed Force was introduced to solve narrative questions, not to create them.”
- Straight track, running only: Jay Garrick has the stronger explicit benchmark in the cited descriptions. Calling him the likely winner is a reasoned inference, not a canonically settled result.
- Unrestricted powers: The outcome depends on which Flash, which Sonic, and which continuity’s rules apply. Space-time travel makes this more than a simple sprint, so there is no universal verdict from these sources.
Does the DC x Sonic crossover settle it?
In a September 24, 2024 announcement, DC and SEGA said a five-issue Justice League/Sonic crossover would begin in March 2025 and publish monthly through July. The announcement pairs Sonic with the Flash role, but it does not establish that the comic contains a Sonic-versus-Flash race or declare a winner. The announcement is about the collaboration, not proof of a canonical race result.

Verdict: who is faster, Sonic or the Flash?
If the question is limited to standard game-series Sonic versus Jay Garrick in a straight running race, Jay has the stronger stated benchmark in the official descriptions cited here, so he is the more defensible pick. That conclusion compares unlike fictional descriptions, not shared measurements. Change the Flash, Sonic’s form, the continuity, or the race rules, and the answer is no longer established by these sources.
