A fan-made browser project turned one of Severance’s strangest props—the floating-number interface used by Lumon’s Macrodata Refinement department—into something viewers can actually try. Severance turns office software into one of television’s strangest mysteries. The Macrodata Refinement screen is a wall of shifting numbers, and the workers assigned to it are told to search for groups that feel “scary.” A fan project made that fictional ritual interactive: you can sit in front of a browser recreation of Lumon’s terminal and try to find the numbers for yourself.
The original Lumon interface recreation
The project was created by @iamrob_in and reported by iMore on March 14, 2022. It recreated the look of the Macrodata Refinement interface from Severance, giving fans a playable way to explore the show’s most deliberately opaque piece of office technology.
The original experience was not presented as an Apple product or an official Severance game. It was a fan-made browser experiment: a digital recreation of the MDR screen and its unsettling number-hunting task. What you are supposed to do
In the show, Macrodata Refinement employees stare at large fields of numbers and identify clusters that produce an uneasy or “scary” feeling. They then select and process those groups through Lumon’s fictional system.
The fan recreation captures the central idea: scan the floating numbers and look for groups that seem to belong together. It is better understood as an interactive interface recreation or playable fan experience than as a complete simulation of MDR work.
In particular, the original report did not establish that the project reproduced the entire bucket-dragging workflow shown in the series. Descriptions should therefore avoid calling it a complete MDR game or claiming that it reveals what the numbers mean. The appeal is the mystery itself: the project lets you perform a small piece of Lumon’s ritual without explaining the fictional purpose behind it.
Why the screen matters in Severance
Apple’s official description of Severance centers on employees whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives. At Lumon, the “innie” version of each worker knows the office but not the outside world, while the “outie” has no ordinary memory of the working day.

That premise makes the MDR interface more than a stylish prop. The workers perform repetitive, controlled tasks while being denied a meaningful explanation of what they are doing. The screen’s floating numbers, vague instructions, reward system, and sterile presentation turn bureaucracy into a mystery. A fan recreation is compelling because it allows viewers to inhabit that confusion for a few minutes rather than merely watch it on screen.
It also preserves an important boundary. Playing with a field of numbers may imitate the appearance and basic premise of MDR, but it does not provide an answer to the show’s larger questions about Lumon, the data, or the workers’ role in the company.

Other unofficial MDR-inspired projects
The 2022 recreation is not the only attempt to turn Lumon’s interface into something playable. Later fan projects take different approaches and should not be confused with the original site.
Macrodata Refinement by Decapitated
Decapitated’s Macrodata Refinement is described as a free HTML5 project built with Godot 4.4. Its instructions tell players to group numbers according to their movement. Correctly selected groups are boxed automatically; an incorrect selection prevents the group from being boxed.

Liquidream’s LUMON-8 is a much smaller demake created for the 2022 Pico-1K jam. The page describes mouse movement and click-drag number refinement and notes that the project was built under a 1,024-byte code constraint.
Its tiny scale is part of the concept. LUMON-8 is a technical and artistic reinterpretation rather than a full recreation of the television interface. The project explicitly identifies itself as a fan creation unaffiliated with Apple.
Fan recreations have moved beyond the browser
Community projects show that interest in Lumon’s fictional software extends beyond quick web experiments. Posts have described more ambitious playable MDR terminals with five traits, five bins, cursor-sensitive number behavior, and a reveal function. Another project documented a physical terminal made with 3D printing, hand painting, customization, and a Raspberry Pi.

Those examples demonstrate the enthusiasm around the prop and its interface, but they do not establish that an official replica exists, that the projects are commercially available, or that a reliable retail product can be purchased. A community build is evidence of fandom—not evidence of Apple licensing or a supported consumer device.
Is it an official Severance game?
