The “last chance today” headline is outdated. Amazon removed Download & Transfer via USB on February 26, 2025. That ended one way to download certain purchased Kindle files to a computer—not Kindle reading, wireless delivery, or USB sideloading for compatible personal documents.
The deadline in that headline is out of date. Amazon removed the Kindle “Download & Transfer via USB” option on February 26, 2025—not August 12, 2026. The change stopped customers from using Amazon’s website to download certain purchased Kindle-book files to a computer and then copy them to an e-reader over USB.
It did not delete customers’ Kindle libraries, end wireless delivery, or disable USB transfers for compatible personal documents. However, Amazon has made a separate change since then: on May 20, 2026, it ended Kindle Store support for Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets released in 2012 or earlier.
What Amazon removed
The discontinued feature was called Download & Transfer via USB. It appeared in Amazon’s web-based content library for eligible Kindle purchases. A customer could select a book, choose the download-and-transfer option, save a Kindle file to a computer, and connect an authorized Kindle with a USB cable.

That workflow was useful for owners of older Kindles, people with unreliable wireless connectivity, and readers who wanted a computer-side copy of purchased Kindle files. It was also one of the more straightforward ways to move Kindle content to a device without relying on the Kindle Store’s wireless delivery system.
After February 26, 2025, Amazon no longer provided that web-library route. A USB cable, a newer Kindle, or the Send to Kindle service does not restore it. In particular, you cannot use ordinary USB storage access to retrieve a DRM-protected Kindle Store purchase from Amazon’s servers.
What still works
Wireless delivery to supported Kindle devices and apps
Purchased Kindle books remain associated with the customer’s Amazon account and can still be delivered over the internet to supported Kindle e-readers and Kindle apps. In practice, the usual route is to open the Kindle Store or your Kindle library, choose the book, and select a supported device or app as the delivery destination.
This is different from downloading a generally usable book file to a computer. Wireless delivery lets you read the purchase inside Amazon’s supported Kindle ecosystem; it does not recreate the retired computer-download workflow.
Send to Kindle for compatible personal files
Amazon continues to support Send to Kindle for compatible personal documents. Supported formats include EPUB, PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTML, and common image formats, although conversion and feature support can vary by file type and device.
You can generally send these files through Amazon’s Send to Kindle website, supported apps, or an approved Send to Kindle email address. Once processed, the document can appear across supported Kindle devices and apps associated with the account.

Send to Kindle is a document-delivery service—not a replacement for downloading purchased, DRM-protected Kindle books from Amazon’s content library. A personal EPUB or PDF and an Amazon Kindle Store book are not interchangeable for this purpose.
USB sideloading for compatible, DRM-free files
USB transfer itself has not disappeared. To sideload a compatible personal file:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Connect the Kindle to a computer with a data-capable USB cable.
- Unlock the Kindle if necessary and open it as a removable drive on the computer.
- Copy the compatible file into the device’s Documents folder.
- Eject the Kindle safely, then disconnect it.
The Kindle must recognize the file format, and the file must be free of DRM that prevents transfer or reading. This method is suitable for documents and other compatible personal content. It does not provide access to a cloud library of Amazon purchases and cannot bypass Kindle content protection.
If a file does not appear, check that the transfer completed, that the Kindle supports the format, and that the file is not DRM-protected. A cable that only charges the device can also prevent a computer from seeing it, but changing cables will not bring back Amazon’s discontinued purchase-download option.
The separate 2026 cutoff for older Kindles
Amazon’s other important Kindle change took effect on May 20, 2026. Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets released in 2012 or earlier were no longer able to purchase, borrow, or download additional Kindle Store content after that date, according to Amazon’s support notice.

Existing books that were already downloaded to an affected device can still be read. The devices were not necessarily “bricked,” and the cutoff was not the same as the 2025 removal of Download & Transfer via USB.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The exact result can depend on the model and account, so identify the device in Amazon’s device-management tools rather than relying only on its appearance or the year it was purchased.
Should you replace an old Kindle?
If your Kindle was released in 2012 or earlier and you want to continue purchasing, borrowing, or downloading Kindle Store content directly to an e-reader, replacing it with a currently supported Kindle is the practical solution. A supported Kindle e-reader, such as a current Kindle Paperwhite, can receive books through Amazon’s supported delivery channels.
That upgrade solves an old-device compatibility problem. It does not restore Download & Transfer via USB, and it does not turn Amazon purchases into unrestricted files that can be backed up to a computer.
Before buying anything, check:
- the exact model listed in your Amazon account;
- whether the device was released in 2012 or earlier;
- whether your goal is continued Kindle Store access or computer-side file preservation;
- whether the books you need are already downloaded locally; and
- whether you primarily read through a Kindle e-reader, Fire tablet, phone, or desktop app.
A replacement Kindle is not necessary merely because Amazon removed the old USB-download menu. Supported Kindles and apps can still receive Kindle books wirelessly, and personal documents can still be sent or sideloaded when they meet Amazon’s format and DRM requirements.
DRM-free Kindle books have a limited EPUB and PDF exception
Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing documentation describes a separate policy effective January 20, 2026. Verified purchasers may download EPUB and PDF files for eligible Kindle books whose publishers have chosen not to apply DRM.

This does not apply to every Kindle book. The publisher must have selected the relevant DRM-free setting, and the book must be eligible under Amazon’s policy. DRM-protected books do not gain an EPUB/PDF download option simply because the reader purchased them.
Kindle Unlimited borrowing is also different: a borrowed title is not downloadable as an EPUB or PDF merely because it happens to be DRM-free. Treat this as a publisher-controlled exception for qualifying purchases, not as a return of Amazon’s old Download & Transfer via USB feature.
What this means for preserving your Kindle library
The safest way to describe Kindle purchases is that they are accessed through an Amazon account and Amazon’s delivery system. The removed USB option previously offered an easier computer-side route for some purchased files, so its removal reduces backup and interoperability options. It does not show that Amazon has deleted every purchased book from every customer’s account.
Recommended Free Tools
Readers concerned about access should take these steps:
- Check your library. Confirm that important purchases appear in your Amazon or Kindle library.
- Download what is currently available to supported devices. This helps maintain offline reading access, although it is not the same as creating a computer backup.
- Check your device model. Do not assume an older Kindle will continue receiving new content simply because it still turns on.
- Use Send to Kindle or USB for personal files. Keep original EPUB, PDF, or document files in your own storage when you are legally entitled to do so.
- Look for the DRM-free option where applicable. Only eligible, publisher-designated DRM-free Kindle purchases qualify for Amazon’s EPUB/PDF downloads.
What you cannot do
- You cannot use a Kindle USB cable to restore Amazon’s retired web-library download option.
- You cannot assume that every Kindle purchase can be downloaded as EPUB or PDF.
- You cannot use Send to Kindle to turn a DRM-protected Amazon purchase into an unrestricted personal file.
- You cannot assume that buying a new Kindle creates a full computer backup of your Amazon library.
- You should not conclude that every old Kindle is permanently unusable; the 2026 cutoff concerns additional Kindle Store activity, while already downloaded books may remain readable.
The timeline in one view
| Date | Change | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| January 20, 2026 | DRM-free Kindle-book policy | Verified purchasers may download EPUB/PDF files for eligible publisher-designated DRM-free books. This excludes DRM-protected titles and does not make Kindle Unlimited loans downloadable. |
| May 20, 2026 | Support cutoff for devices released in 2012 or earlier | Affected Kindles and Fire tablets can no longer purchase, borrow, or download additional Kindle Store content, although previously downloaded books may remain readable. |
| February 26, 2025 | Download & Transfer via USB removed | The Amazon web-library option for downloading certain purchased Kindle files to a computer and transferring them by USB ended. |
The 2025 date is the answer to the original “last chance” claim. The 2026 dates describe later, separate developments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still download Kindle books to my computer?
No. Amazon removed the specific Download & Transfer via USB option from its web library on February 26, 2025. Supported Kindle devices and apps can still receive purchases wirelessly.
Does USB transfer still work on Kindle?
Yes, for compatible personal files that are free of restrictive DRM. Amazon supports USB sideloading into a Kindle’s Documents folder, but this does not retrieve DRM-protected Kindle Store purchases.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I download Kindle books as EPUB or PDF?
Only if the book is eligible, the publisher selected Amazon’s DRM-free setting, and you are a verified purchaser. This EPUB/PDF option does not apply to DRM-protected books or Kindle Unlimited loans.
What happened to older Kindle devices in 2026?
Amazon ended the ability to purchase, borrow, or download additional Kindle Store content on devices released in 2012 or earlier on May 20, 2026. Books already downloaded may still be readable.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Amazon retired one specific computer-download route on February 26, 2025. Kindle books can still be delivered wirelessly to supported devices and apps, and compatible DRM-free personal files can still be sent or transferred by USB. If you own a Kindle released in 2012 or earlier, check its model and consider a supported replacement because Amazon ended additional Kindle Store activity on those devices on May 20, 2026—but a new Kindle will not restore the discontinued Download & Transfer via USB feature.
