Society of the Snow is J.A. Bayona’s dramatization of the 1972 crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in the Andes. It follows the rugby team and other passengers who faced an extraordinary struggle to survive, drawing on Pablo Vierci’s book La Sociedad de la Nieve and the testimony of survivors.
What is Society of the Snow about?
The Spanish-language feature tells the story of Flight 571, which was carrying a Uruguayan rugby team to Chile when it crashed in the Andes in 1972. Netflix’s official film listing says 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash.
The film centers on the people left in an isolated, life-threatening landscape and the decisions they made to stay alive. Its subject is a real catastrophe, but the film is a dramatization: scenes and dialogue on screen should not automatically be treated as documentary records or verbatim statements by the people portrayed.
Is the film based on a true story and a book?
Yes. The events are real, and the film adapts Pablo Vierci’s 2008 book La Sociedad de la Nieve. Netflix’s Tudum feature identifies Vierci’s book as the source and reports producer Belén Atienza saying that surviving witnesses were essential to understanding the magnitude of what happened.

That source gives the film a perspective shaped by survivor accounts, but it does not make every cinematic choice a verified historical detail. The story had already been recounted in books and films; the Associated Press described Bayona’s version as a later retelling with an interest in Uruguayan culture and honoring those who died.

Those choices are part of a human response to extreme circumstances, not an invitation to sensationalize or judge the people who faced them. The film’s emotional force comes in part from showing survival as a collective ordeal bound up with grief and responsibility to one another.
How did survivors respond to the film?
Survivor Gustavo Zerbino told the Associated Press that watching the film brought back the ordeal. AP quoted him describing a continuing commitment to bear witness to those who died: “I have a commitment, a commitment from before leaving the mountain to be a witness and transmit the legacy of my dead friends.”

Zerbino’s words are his own statement to AP, not a line to attribute to the film. His account helps explain why retellings carry personal weight for survivors: the story is not only about the people who endured the crash, but also about the friends whose memories they continue to carry.
Where was Society of the Snow filmed?
Production used several locations rather than filming entirely at the crash site. Netflix’s release announcement names Sierra Nevada in Andalusia, Montevideo, and locations in the Andes in Chile and Argentina, including El Valle de las Lágrimas, the real crash location.
