Disney’s Snow White entered 2025 with domestic opening projections as high as $65 million to $85 million. By the final days before release, estimates had fallen to roughly $45 million to $55 million—and the film ultimately opened to $42.21 million. The result was not one sudden forecasting error. It was a sequential reset in expectations, followed by an opening slightly below even the reduced late projections.
The live-action musical reimagining opened first domestically because it faced limited direct competition, but first place did not make the result strong. Its opening weekend was well below the expectations attached to a major Disney remake, and its second-week decline pointed to weak theatrical momentum.
Snow White release details
Disney describes the film as a live-action musical reimagining of the 1937 animated classic. Marc Webb directed the film from a screenplay by Erin Cressida Wilson. Marc Platt and Jared LeBoff produced it, with Rachel Zegler as Snow White, Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan.
Disney’s official release details list a PG rating, a runtime of 1 hour and 49 minutes, and a U.S. release date of March 21, 2025. Those details matter to the box-office analysis because this was not a low-budget revisionist fantasy: it was a costly Disney musical built around one of the company’s foundational properties.

The forecast declined in several stages
The central box-office story is the direction of the estimates. Different tracking services use different models and release windows, so their ranges should not be treated as perfectly interchangeable. Even with that limitation, the movement was consistently downward.
| Tracking stage | Reported domestic opening expectation | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Early February outlook | Approximately $65 million–$85 million | Box Office Pro, as cited by Forbes, presented the film as a potential $60-million-plus opener. The Quorum’s data at 42 days before release also pointed to an opening above $60 million. |
| Long-lead tracking | Approximately $63 million–$70 million | The expectation narrowed into the low-to-mid $60 millions rather than holding the earlier high-end upside. |
| Five-week tracking update | Approximately $52 million–$71 million | The lower end dropped meaningfully, and the midpoint was weaker than the original $65-million–$85-million range implied. |
| Late February | Approximately $48 million–$58 million, with some reports centering on about $53 million | The projected opening had moved decisively away from the early remake-sized launch. |
| Final pre-release estimates | Approximately $45 million–$55 million | Forbes, citing trade and analyst expectations, and the Los Angeles Times both reported a mid-$40-million-to-mid-$50-million range shortly before opening. |
The progression is more important than any individual number. The film moved from a plausible $60-million-plus opening, to a low-$60-million expectation, then to ranges centered in the low-to-mid $50 millions, and finally to the mid-$40 millions. That is evidence that the inputs used by tracking models—such as awareness, advance interest, pre-sales, and comparable-film behavior—were weakening as release approached, even though the proprietary details behind those models are not public.
The actual opening came in below the reduced forecast
The Numbers records a domestic opening weekend of $42,206,415. That figure was:
- about $2.8 million below the $45-million low end of the final pre-release range;
- about $10.8 million below the late central estimate of $53 million; and
- about $22.8 million below the bottom of the earlier $65-million–$85-million range.
Compared with the $65-million low end of the earliest cited range, the opening was roughly 35% lower. Against the $85-million high end, it was about half the amount that the most optimistic early forecast contemplated. The final miss was therefore not simply a case of a film falling short of an unrealistic best-case scenario; it also fell short of the already-reset late expectation.
The worldwide launch was approximately $87.3 million, including about $44.3 million from international markets, according to Variety. The film still ranked first domestically during its opening weekend, but the ranking reflected a relatively soft weekend for the title rather than strong audience demand.
Why did the projections fall?
1. Tracking signals weakened before release
The most directly supported explanation is the deterioration in pre-release demand indicators. Forecasts did not merely fluctuate around the same level; their floors and midpoints generally moved lower over successive tracking windows.

- DTS Virtual-X Sound - An immersive sound format creates a three-dimensional sound experience with your TV’s speakers.
- Supports HDMI ARC - Sends audio directly from the HDMI jack to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver, removing the need for an extra cable.
That pattern does not identify one specific cause. Tracking models combine multiple signals, and the public cannot see how much weight each service gives to pre-sales, awareness, demographics, trailer response, social conversation, or comparable releases. But the falling estimates show that the market’s expectation for the opening was being revised downward before critics’ reactions and opening-weekend word of mouth were fully available.
2. The publicity environment was unusually difficult
Trade coverage described a pre-release conversation dominated by disputes over the story changes, the portrayal of the dwarfs, and political controversy surrounding Zegler and Gadot. Variety’s coverage treated those disputes as part of the film’s challenging publicity environment.

There is no reliable public calculation showing that a particular controversy, boycott, or comment cost the film a specific number of dollars. Nor does the available evidence support saying that Zegler alone caused the decline. The defensible claim is narrower: the controversies competed with the film’s intended family-musical positioning and contributed to a difficult information environment around the release.
3. Reviews and audience response did not create strong momentum
Contemporary coverage described the critics’ response as mixed to weak, with the Rotten Tomatoes critics score in the low-to-mid 40% range at the time. The Los Angeles Times reported a B+ CinemaScore.
A B+ is not a disastrous audience grade, but it is also not the kind of enthusiastic reaction that typically helps a large musical remake expand beyond its opening audience. The combination of modest audience satisfaction, weak critical buzz, and extensive pre-release debate is consistent with a film that attracted curiosity but did not generate compelling urgency to see it in theaters.
4. The remake’s demand proposition was less secure than Disney’s recent hits
Disney had previously turned familiar animated properties into major live-action theatrical events with films such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid. However, Snow White was not marketed as a straightforward reproduction of the 1937 film. It was a musical reimagining with new story elements and a different approach to the characters.

That creative direction may appeal to some viewers while reducing the simple nostalgia-driven proposition that helped other remakes. The question was not whether audiences knew the name Snow White; it was whether enough of them felt that this new version needed to be experienced theatrically. The declining forecasts suggest that the answer was becoming less convincing before release.
The second week showed weak legs
The opening was followed by a sharp drop. The Numbers reports that the film reached approximately $52.61 million in its first full domestic week, including previews, then made about $18.76 million in its second week—a decline of approximately 64%.
Industry coverage put the second-weekend decline at roughly 66%. The distinction matters: a full-week comparison and a weekend-to-weekend comparison are not identical measurements. Both, however, point in the same direction. The film did not develop strong post-opening momentum.
A steep decline can have several contributors, including the timing of the release, the arrival of competing films, and the composition of the opening audience. It should not be treated as a pure measurement of audience dislike. In this case, though, the drop reinforced the pre-release evidence that the film was struggling to convert awareness into sustained theatrical demand.

Final box office versus the reported budget
The Numbers lists approximately:
- $87.20 million domestic;
- $118.48 million international; and
- $205.68 million worldwide.
The same source lists a reported production budget of approximately $269.4 million. On that comparison alone, the worldwide gross amounted to about 0.76 times the reported production cost. Variety later summarized the budget more broadly as being in the $250-million range and classified the film among Disney’s major 2025 box-office disappointments.
Gross revenue is not the same as money returned to the studio. Cinemas retain a share of ticket sales, while Disney also incurs marketing, distribution, financing, and other costs. Conversely, a film can generate additional value through digital rentals, physical media, television licensing, streaming, merchandise, and other ancillary channels. Therefore, the $205.68-million worldwide gross does not by itself establish the studio’s exact profit or loss.

Deadline’s widely cited industry estimate put Disney’s eventual loss at approximately $115 million after accounting for ancillary revenue. That is an external financial estimate, not a loss figure Disney publicly reported as an audited result. The broad conclusion remains clear: a worldwide theatrical gross near $206 million was a difficult outcome for a production reported to cost roughly $250 million to $269.4 million before marketing and distribution.
What the numbers establish—and what they do not
| Supported conclusion | Claim to avoid |
|---|---|
| Domestic opening expectations declined from an early range that reached as high as $85 million to a late range of about $45 million–$55 million. | That one person, controversy, or online campaign can be assigned a precise dollar amount of blame. |
| The film opened to $42.21 million, below even the low end of the final forecast. | That the initial $65-million–$85-million range was a guaranteed outcome rather than a forecast. |
| The second-week fall and mixed reception indicate weak theatrical legs. | That the second-week decline proves every viewer disliked the movie or that competition played no role. |
| The reported production cost created an unusually high financial hurdle. | That worldwide gross equals Disney’s revenue or that the estimated $115-million loss was an official Disney accounting statement. |
An official companion for readers studying the adaptation
The film’s reimagining can also be examined through its licensed tie-in material. Disney Books lists an official Snow White 2025 live action novelization by Elizabeth Rudnick, released March 25, 2025. It is a companion product for readers interested in the film’s story and adaptation choices—not evidence of box-office demand—and availability may vary by retailer and region.

Final assessment
Snow White’s box-office problem was a forecast reset that never stopped. Expectations moved from the $60-million-plus range to the mid-$40 millions, and the film then opened at $42.21 million. The subsequent 64% full-week decline, mixed reception, difficult publicity environment, and very high reported production cost compounded the weak launch.
The strongest interpretation is therefore a convergence of factors: weakening pre-release demand signals, an unusually contentious publicity cycle, limited enthusiasm from critics and audiences, uncertainty about the theatrical appeal of the reimagining, and a cost structure that required far more than a merely respectable opening. The available evidence supports calling the film a major commercial disappointment. It does not support reducing the result to a single-cause narrative about Rachel Zegler or any individual controversy.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far below its early forecast did Snow White open?
The film opened to $42.21 million domestically. That was about $22.8 million below the $65-million low end of the earliest cited $65-million–$85-million range, and about $2.8 million below the low end of the final $45-million–$55-million estimate.
Did Rachel Zegler alone cause the box-office decline?
No. Public reporting supports the existence of a controversial publicity environment, but it does not provide a reliable causal breakdown assigning a specific dollar loss to Zegler, Gadot, a boycott, or any single issue. The decline is better described as the result of weakening demand signals combined with mixed reception, controversy, remake uncertainty, and a high cost base.
Did Disney officially confirm a $115 million loss?
No. The approximately $115-million figure was a widely cited Deadline industry estimate that incorporated ancillary revenue. It should not be presented as an audited loss figure publicly confirmed by Disney.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The projection decline was sequential and measurable: Snow White moved from early expectations as high as $85 million domestically to late estimates around $45 million–$55 million, then opened to $42.21 million. Its approximately $205.68-million worldwide theatrical gross was a major disappointment against the reported production cost, but the evidence points to several overlapping causes—not a provable single-cause failure.
