Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon opened SNL50: The Anniversary Celebration with a duet of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound.” The choice connected the 2025 special to an earlier Saturday Night Live performance: Simon told the audience he had performed the song on the show in 1976 with George Harrison.
How the duet opened the SNL50 special
The anniversary special aired Sunday, February 16, 2025, live from New York on NBC and Peacock, according to the Associated Press’s account of the broadcast. Carpenter and Simon introduced each other, then performed “Homeward Bound” to begin the NBC broadcast. The official Paul Simon site’s February 19 recap likewise described the pair as kicking off the special with the duet.
After the song, the two said the show’s familiar opening line, “Live From New York, it’s Saturday night.” Steve Martin followed with the monologue. Although the special aired on a Sunday, the catchphrase retained its traditional Saturday wording; Simon’s official recap specifically noted that contrast.
Why “Homeward Bound” recalled SNL’s past
Simon linked the anniversary performance to a previous appearance on the program: he said he had performed “Homeward Bound” on SNL in 1976 with George Harrison. The 2025 duet therefore brought the same song back to the show nearly five decades later, with Carpenter taking Harrison’s place in this pairing.

Carpenter responded to Simon’s account with, “I was not born then,” followed by, “And neither were my parents,” as reported by the Associated Press. The exchange made the gap between the two performances part of the broadcast’s onstage conversation as well as its historical context.
What is known about the two performances
The documented connection is the song and the SNL setting: Simon’s account identifies the 1976 performance with Harrison, while the 2025 special opened with Carpenter and Simon singing “Homeward Bound.” The cited accounts establish the performers, song, and placement of the 2025 duet, but do not provide enough detail for a reliable comparison of the musical arrangements.
