No confirmed U.S. ban is established here. In December 2024, Oscar-winning filmmaker Adam McKay said he would not be surprised if Wicked Part 1 were banned in the United States in three to five years—but only if the country continued on its then-current political trajectory. It was a conditional prediction, not a report that a ban had happened.
What did Adam McKay say about Wicked?
McKay posted about Wicked Part 1 on X on December 23, 2024. The Independent reported his comments on December 26. He called the film “one of the most radical big studio Hollywood movies ever made,” praising its storytelling and arguing that its themes were politically pointed.
He described Part 1 as “nakedly about radicalization in the face of careerism, fascism, propaganda.” That is McKay’s interpretation of the film, not an uncontested statement of what the movie means.
His forecast was explicitly conditional: “If America keeps going on the track it is I wouldn’t be surprised to see the movie banned in 3-5 years.” The three-to-five-year period was his forecast horizon, not a measured probability or evidence that a ban was planned. The Independent’s report also notes that McKay compared the film with popular works including The Sound of Music, Citizen Kane, Bridge on the River Kwai, The Searchers and The Hunger Games.

Did McKay say a ban was certain?
No. In a separate clarification reported by The Daily Beast, McKay said: “I don’t know if specifically any movie or book will be banned on state or [federal] level, but I do know this is in the works.” That statement likewise does not identify a specific law, authority, or confirmed ban on Wicked. The Daily Beast’s account distinguishes his broader concern from a claim that this particular film would definitely be prohibited.
Was Wicked banned in Kuwait?
The Independent reported that Wicked had been briefly pulled from cinemas in Kuwait earlier in December 2024. It said local outlets speculated that the withdrawal was connected to LGBTQ+ casting, but the report did not establish that as an official reason. This reported temporary cinema withdrawal in Kuwait is a separate event from McKay’s hypothetical forecast about a possible future U.S. ban; the available accounts do not establish that the situations were legally or politically equivalent.

What is known about Wicked’s status now?
The contemporaneous reports establish what McKay said and what was reported about the Kuwait cinema withdrawal. They do not provide a comprehensive, current account of the film’s legal or exhibition status across territories as of October 7, 2026, or establish whether any U.S. authority or distributor has since restricted it. McKay’s 2024 prediction should therefore not be repeated as a present-tense claim that Wicked is banned.

The film is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Readers interested in the source material can explore the novel separately from McKay’s comments about the adaptation. Encyclopaedia Britannica’s entry on the novel identifies its author and publication year.
