In the 2025 Saturday Night Live 50th-anniversary special, Kenan Thompson, Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell play former convicts attempting to frighten a group of teenagers. The sketch’s official title is “Scared Straight – SNL50”; Mikey Day, Marcello Hernández and Michael Longfellow play the teens, according to the official clip description and Peacock’s recap.
What happens in the SNL50 sketch?
The sketch takes the familiar premise of a “Scared Straight” visit and turns the intimidation attempt into the joke. Thompson, Murphy and Ferrell portray the ex-convicts brought in to warn the teenagers; the official descriptions identify Day, Hernández and Longfellow as the teen characters. Peacock’s recap frames the turn this way: the would-be intimidators’ own efforts become the frightening part.
Saturday Night Live published the clip on February 16, 2025. Peacock’s anniversary-special recap includes it among the sketches in the SNL50 special.
Who is in the cast?

These roles are identified in the official SNL clip description and Peacock’s recap.

What the sketch’s title refers to in real life
“Scared Straight” was also the name commonly associated with juvenile-awareness interventions in which young people visited adult prisons and encountered incarcerated people in an effort to deter delinquency. The television sketch uses that premise for comedy; its performances are not evidence about whether the real intervention works.

Federal summaries of evaluations report no established deterrent benefit and raise concerns that the approach may increase offending. The Office of Justice Programs’ 2013 summary of a review by Anthony Petrosino, Carolyn Turpin-Petrosino and John Buehler reported that nine experimental studies found no evidence of effectiveness in preventing later delinquency. The summary covered 946 participants ages 14–20. In an analysis of seven studies, the review found significantly increased odds of both first offenses and repeat offenses.
Those are findings across evaluated studies, not a prediction about every young person or a claim that every program was implemented identically. The National Institute of Justice’s 2022 overview describes the interventions as potentially ineffective and harmful, drawing on two meta-analyses. Its CrimeSolutions profile reports an odds ratio of 1.47 for offending in the Petrosino, Petrosino and Buehler synthesis. That is a meta-analytic result, not an individual’s probability of offending. The profile is a historical government summary and says it is no longer being updated.
