In the Saturday Night Live cold open following Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, James Austin Johnson’s Trump interrupted Lin-Manuel Miranda during a Declaration of Independence scene and turned it into a comic defense of his first week in office. The central gag set Miranda’s “never have a king” line against the character’s declaration that he was in his “king era.”
How the cold open began
The scene placed Miranda in a founding-era setting, rapping about America and the Declaration of Independence. When he said, “In America we are all created equal … in America we will never have a king,” Johnson’s Trump cut in: “Never say never.“
He followed with: “Kidding of course,” adds. “But in many ways I’m not. I’m in my king era.” The Independent’s Mary Papenfuss reported the exchange on January 26, 2025, describing Miranda as frozen onstage as the Trump character continued.
What the Trump character said next
The interruption shifted the sketch from its founding-era setup to jokes about the administration’s first week. The character claimed, “just like the Founding Fathers, I am creating a new country,” then added, “And just like them, we’re doing it very whitely.” Another line turned gender into a joke: “From now on, there will be two genders. One to work, and one to cook.”

These are lines from a satirical SNL sketch, not statements by the real Trump in this scene. The report describes political allusions and jokes about executive orders, but it is not an independent account verifying the policy actions referenced by the sketch.
Why Miranda’s presence pointed to Hamilton
The Declaration scene evoked Miranda’s Broadway musical Hamilton, which draws on the founding era and is based on the 2004 biography of Alexander Hamilton. The musical’s use of nonwhite performers and its emphasis on the United States as a nation of immigrants sharpen the contrast with the Trump character’s “very whitely” line. One of the show’s signature songs is “Immigrants (we get the job done).”

That contrast gives the interruption its structure: Miranda’s rap invokes equality and resistance to monarchy, while Johnson’s character adopts a deliberately king-like persona and remakes the founding story as a punchline.

The Independent report identifies this as the SNL cold open after Trump became president again and names Johnson as the performer playing Trump. It presents selected dialogue, not a full transcript, and does not give an episode number. It also does not establish where the episode or Hamilton can currently be streamed, so viewing availability should be checked against current listings.
