Shane Gillis returned to host Saturday Night Live on March 1, 2025, in Season 50, Episode 14, with Tate McRae as musical guest. The first regular episode after the show’s 50th-anniversary celebrations paired a Trump–Zelensky cold open with a monologue that addressed race and a slate of sketches that drew sharply different reactions from reviewers. NBC’s episode listing confirms the date and host; the Associated Press identifies it as Gillis’s second time hosting.
Why Shane Gillis had been fired from SNL
In 2019, Saturday Night Live hired Gillis as a cast member, but fired him before his planned debut after a 2018 podcast clip drew backlash for an anti-Asian slur and mocking accents, the Associated Press reported. He later hosted for the first time on February 24, 2024, according to Forbes. His March 2025 appearance was therefore a return as host, not a return to the cast.
What happened when Gillis hosted SNL again?
The cold open and monologue
The cold open parodied the recent meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky. James Austin Johnson played Trump, Bowen Yang played JD Vance, Mikey Day played Zelensky, and Mike Myers appeared as Elon Musk, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Gillis’s monologue mixed political jokes with personal material about uncomfortable behavior. The Los Angeles Times review by Omar L. Gallaga reported that Gillis acknowledged one bit was racist and quoted him saying, “It’s a shameful thing to ask. It’s weird. I’ve done it. I’m not proud.” The line was part of the monologue, not a general statement detached from its context.

The sketches
The episode moved through several familiar SNL formats, including:
- A local midday-news panel guessing the race of people described in crime stories.
- A winery-tour sketch about a boyfriend taking photos of his demanding girlfriend.
- “Dad’s House,” a PBS-style children’s show centered on a divorced father.
- A fake antidepressant commercial for “CouplaBeers.”
- “The Sound,” a parody of The Voice.
These descriptions capture the segments; their success is a matter of critical judgment, and the two contemporary reviews did not agree on which sketches stood out.

Weekend Update and Tate McRae

Her album So Close to What had been released shortly before the episode; formats and links are listed by Amazon and on McRae’s official site.
How critics judged the episode
The Los Angeles Times review was sharply negative overall. Gallaga argued that Gillis seldom moved beyond a low-energy version of himself and called much of the material crude, while naming the local-news sketch as the night’s best and praising moments involving Heidi Gardner, Emil Wakim, Kenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim.

Forbes’ Rosa Escandon also found the episode uneven, but highlighted “Winery Tour,” “CouplaBeers” and “Dad’s House” as effective or well matched to Gillis. The contrast is partly about performance range: the Los Angeles Times questioned how much Gillis varied his persona, while Forbes saw sketches that worked by leaning into his established comic type. These are the views of two reviewers, not a measure of audience consensus.
