Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHRU usually means “how are you,” SB means “Snap back,” and WYLL means “what you look like.” This guide explains 33 common Snapchat abbreviations and separates informal slang from official Snapchat symbols such as hearts, Streak icons, the hourglass, and chat-status indicators.
If someone sends “HRU,” “SB,” “WYLL,” or “FFF” on Snapchat, they are using an abbreviation rather than a special Snapchat code. Most of these expressions come from texting and social media generally; a smaller group asks you to take a Snapchat action, such as sending a Snap, replying, or following an account.
This 2024 reference separates common conversation shorthand from Snapchat-specific requests and from Snapchat’s official interface symbols. Meanings are approximate: capitalization is flexible, and the same abbreviation can mean different things in another conversation.
Snapchat conversation abbreviations
| Term | Usually means | How it is used |
|---|---|---|
| HRU | How are you? | A casual check-in, often intended to start a conversation or prompt a reply. |
| WtM | What’s the move? | Asks what the plan is or what activity is happening next. |
| MK | Mmm, okay | Can indicate acknowledgment, reluctance, skepticism, or mild judgment. The tone matters. |
| ISTG | I swear to God | Adds emphasis or signals sincerity, disbelief, or frustration. |
| HMU | Hit me up | Invites the other person to contact the sender later. |
| LMS | Like my status | Requests engagement with a status or post. In other contexts, LMS can also mean “last man standing” or “let me see.” |
| ASL | Age, sex, location | An older internet expression asking for personal details. It can be intrusive and should not be treated as a safe request to make of strangers, particularly minors. |
| FRL | For real | Can ask whether someone is serious—“FRL?”—or show agreement: “FRL, that was funny.” |
| ion | I don’t | An informal phonetic spelling. Its precise meaning depends on the words around it, such as “ion know” for “I don’t know.” |
| WYLL | What you look like | Usually asks for a photo or a description of someone’s appearance. |
| NRS | No replies | Often means the sender will not be replying or sending Snaps for a while. |
| SMO | Serious mode on | Signals that what follows is meant seriously rather than as a joke. |
| TBH | To be honest | Introduces a candid opinion or personal statement. |
| PU | Pop up | Often invites someone to visit or appear in person. |
| HY | Hell yeah | Shows strong agreement, enthusiasm, or excitement. |
| IDM | I don’t mind | Indicates flexibility or a lack of preference between options. |
| ISK | I should know | Expresses that the speaker ought to know the answer or information. |
| TTM | Talk to me | Invites conversation, an explanation, or a response. |
| SMH | Shaking my head | Expresses disbelief, disappointment, disapproval, or frustration. |
| ICL | I can’t lie | Emphasizes that the following statement is honest or candid. |
| TFW | That feeling when | Introduces a relatable emotional situation, commonly alongside an image, GIF, or meme. |
| YKTV | You know the vibe | Suggests that the other person understands the mood, situation, or shared experience. |
| YKTS | You know the score | Means the other person already understands the relevant situation or context. The abbreviation is YKTS; similar-looking variants may be typos. |
| HIFW | How I feel when | Introduces a reaction or emotional scenario, often paired with media. |
| WYWH | Wish you were here | Expresses that the sender wants someone who is absent to share the moment. |
| TIME | Tears in my eyes | Usually describes something extremely funny or emotionally moving. |
| SSDD | Same stuff, different day | Says that circumstances are essentially unchanged. |
| YNK | You never know | Acknowledges uncertainty or the possibility that something unexpected may happen. |
These reported meanings are compiled from the 2024 Snapchat slang reference published by Fossbytes. They are common uses, not official definitions issued by Snapchat.

Snapchat-specific requests and calls to action
| Term | Usually means | What the sender wants |
|---|---|---|
| AMOS | Add me on Snapchat | A request to connect or add the sender as a Snapchat friend. |
| SCM | Snapchat me | An invitation to send the person a Snap. |
| ESB | Everyone snap back | A request for everyone who received the message or Snap to respond with one. |
| SB | Snap back | A request for a reply Snap. It may be connected with maintaining a Streak. |
| SU | Swipe up | A direction to access linked or additional content from a Story or message. Snapchat’s interface and available Story actions can change, so “SU” does not always describe a currently visible button or gesture. |
| LMR | Like my recent | A request to engage with a recent post, Story, or other recent content. |
| FFF | Follow for follow | A proposal to follow each other reciprocally. |
For example, “SB for the streak” generally means “send a Snap back so we can continue our Streak,” while “FFF?” proposes mutual follows. Whether you should respond is a personal choice; an abbreviation is not an obligation to add someone, share a photo, or disclose personal information.
Official Snapchat symbols and status indicators
Emojis and icons shown by Snapchat are different from informal slang. Their meanings come from Snapchat’s interface and can change with app updates, account activity, or settings. Snapchat says that Friend Emojis are based on how two people use the service and can change regularly. Its official Friend Emoji guide explains the principal examples:
- Yellow heart: you and the other person are each other’s number-one Best Friend.
- Red heart: you have held that number-one Best Friend status for two weeks.
- Pink hearts: you have held it for two months.
- Fire emoji: you have an active Snapstreak with the person.
- Hourglass: the Snapstreak is ending soon.
- Birthday cake: the friend’s Snapchat birthday.
A Streak is an activity status, not slang for a conversation. Snapchat maintains a dedicated Snapstreak Support section covering how Streaks work, expiration, and restoration. Because the rules and recovery options can change, use that current documentation rather than relying on an old claim about exactly when a Streak expires or whether it can be restored.

Chat icons
Chat-screen indicators can show that a Snap or message was sent, opened, received, viewed, screenshotted, or replayed. A gray pending icon may appear when a person has not accepted a friend request, depending on privacy settings. These are delivery and activity indicators—not alternate meanings for abbreviations such as “SB” or “SCM.” Snapchat’s chat-icon documentation is the appropriate reference if an icon’s color or shape is unclear, because the display can vary by message type and app version.
How to interpret an unfamiliar Snapchat abbreviation
- Read the whole sentence. “ion know” is likely “I don’t know,” while “ion want that” means “I don’t want that.” The spelling alone is not enough.
- Look at what came before it. “SB” after a Snap often means “Snap back”; in a different community, the same letters may have another meaning.
- Separate requests from opinions. “HMU,” “TTM,” “SCM,” and “SB” invite a response. “TBH,” “SMH,” and “ICL” mainly frame the sender’s statement.
- Check the tone. “MK” can be neutral, reluctant, or judgmental. Punctuation, emojis, and the relationship between the people may change the intended tone.
- Do not confuse an interface symbol with slang. A heart, fire emoji, hourglass, or chat icon has a platform-defined function; consult Snapchat Support when the symbol affects a Streak, privacy, or message status.
- Ask for clarification when the stakes matter. It is safer to ask “What do you mean by that?” than to guess when the message involves meeting in person, sharing an image, sending money, or revealing personal information.
Safety notes about Snapchat slang
Abbreviations can make a message feel casual, but they do not make a request safe. ASL asks for age, sex, and location and may be inappropriate or intrusive, especially when directed at a minor or stranger. WYLL may similarly be a request for a personal photo. Do not share your exact location, intimate images, passwords, school details, or other identifying information merely because someone asks in shorthand.
“AMOS,” “FFF,” and similar requests can also come from accounts you do not know. Check who is contacting you before accepting a friend request or moving a conversation elsewhere. If a message is threatening, coercive, sexual, or designed to pressure you into sharing content, stop responding, use Snapchat’s blocking or reporting tools, and involve a trusted adult or appropriate authority when necessary.

Are these abbreviations unique to Snapchat?
No. HRU, HMU, TBH, SMH, FRL, ICL, TFW, and many others are general texting or social-media abbreviations. AMOS, SCM, SB, ESB, LMR, and FFF are more closely associated with social-platform activity, but even those are not guaranteed to have one meaning in every group. Snapchat-specific interface terms—such as Friend Emojis, Streaks, and chat-status icons—should be understood from Snapchat’s own documentation rather than from an informal slang list.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Snapchat abbreviations unique to Snapchat?
No. Many are general texting and social-media abbreviations, including HRU, HMU, TBH, SMH, and TFW. Others, such as SB and SCM, are commonly used as Snapchat-related requests, while Friend Emojis and chat icons are official interface features.
What does SB mean on Snapchat?
SB usually means “Snap back,” or send a reply Snap. In a Streak conversation, it can be a request to send a Snap so the exchange continues. Context still matters because abbreviations can have different meanings elsewhere.
What does WYLL mean on Snapchat?
WYLL usually means “What you look like” and is generally a request for a photo or description of your appearance. You do not have to respond or send a photo, especially if the request comes from a stranger.
What does ASL mean, and is it safe to answer?
ASL traditionally means “age, sex, location.” It is an older internet expression and can be intrusive or unsafe, particularly when directed at minors or strangers. Avoid sharing identifying information with unknown accounts.
The Bottom Line
Most Snapchat abbreviations are informal texting shorthand, not official Snapchat terminology. Use the surrounding sentence and tone to interpret them, and rely on Snapchat Support for Friend Emojis, Streaks, and chat icons.
