If Snapchat says it could not record video, first close and reopen the app, update Snapchat, restart your phone, and check Camera and Microphone permissions. Then clear Snapchat’s cache and test video and audio in your phone’s built-in Camera app. The symptom matters: a black preview points to camera access, a silent video points to the microphone, and a clip that records but will not send is more likely a connection or app-service problem.
Start with these quick fixes
- Force-close Snapchat and reopen it. Returning to the home screen may leave the app running; close it fully, reopen it, and try a short video.
- Update Snapchat. Check the App Store on iPhone, Google Play Store on Android, or Amazon Appstore if that is where you installed it. Snapchat recommends using the latest available app version.
- Restart the phone. If practical, turn it off completely for about a minute, then turn it back on. This can reset stuck camera, microphone, and app processes, though it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Check Camera and Microphone access. Snapchat needs Camera access to capture video and Microphone access to record sound.
- Switch networks if the Snap will not load or send. Try Wi-Fi instead of mobile data, or the reverse. A connection problem can interrupt loading or sending, but does not by itself explain every failure to capture a local video.
- Clear Snapchat’s in-app cache. This may resolve temporary app-state problems. It does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats.
- Test your phone’s native Camera app and microphone. This helps establish whether the issue is Snapchat-specific or affects the device too.
Snapchat video recording uses a press-and-hold on the Camera button. If the button seems unresponsive, try holding it rather than tapping once. Snapchat’s camera guidance describes this recording gesture. For general app failures, its troubleshooting steps include updating, restarting Snapchat and the device, checking the connection, and reporting a bug.
Identify where the video is failing

Separating capture from saving and sending avoids chasing the wrong cause. A network switch is worth trying for a Snap that will not load or send; it is less likely to fix a camera that will not start recording at all. Snapchat has separate guidance for Snaps that will not send or load.
Check permissions on iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and turn on Snapchat.
- Return to Privacy & Security, open Microphone, and turn on Snapchat.
- Reopen Snapchat and try a short video.
Apple manages app access to these features under Settings > Privacy & Security; see its iPhone privacy controls. If Snapchat is not listed, it may not have requested that permission yet. Try the relevant feature in Snapchat and allow access when prompted.

Look for the iPhone privacy indicator while Snapchat is using the hardware: green means the camera is in use, while orange means the microphone is being used without the camera. If the expected indicator does not appear during a test, revisit permissions and app state. These indicators are clues, not a diagnosis by themselves.
Check permissions on Android
- Open Settings > Apps > Snapchat. If needed, tap See all apps first.
- Tap Permissions, then allow Camera and Microphone while using the app, or choose the closest equivalent shown.
- Check device-wide privacy controls as well: open Settings and look under Security & Privacy, Privacy, or Privacy controls. Make sure Camera access and Microphone access are on.
- Reopen Snapchat and test again.
Android menu names vary by manufacturer and version. Google’s general instructions are under app permissions. On Android 12 and later, a green indicator can signal camera or microphone use; tapping it can show which app or service is accessing the hardware. See Google’s camera and microphone indicators.
Fix silent, muffled, or distorted video
Confirm that Snapchat has Microphone permission and that the device-wide microphone control is enabled. Then record a short voice note or native-camera video and play it back. Disconnect a Bluetooth headset temporarily and test again; an attached audio device can change which microphone is used.

If the sound is muffled or distorted on iOS 26, Snapchat documents a specific workaround: while recording, open Control Center, tap the Snapchat Controls pill, and change Microphone from Voice Isolation to Standard, then try Automatic. This is a targeted workaround for poor audio quality, not a universal fix for silent video. Details are in Snapchat’s iOS 26 audio guidance.
Clear Snapchat’s cache
Use Snapchat’s in-app controls rather than looking for an iPhone system option to clear app data:
- In Snapchat, tap your Profile icon, then the gear icon for Settings.
- Open App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data.
- On iPhone, tap Clear Cache. On Android, tap Clear Data > Clear Cache.
- Confirm, then reopen Snapchat and test a short recording.
Snapchat says clearing its cache does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats. Cache clearing can help with temporary app problems, but it is not guaranteed to fix recording. Follow Snapchat’s cache instructions; do not confuse this with clearing all app data or uninstalling.

Test the phone’s camera and microphone
- Open the built-in Camera app and record a brief clip with the front camera.
- Record another with the rear camera and play both clips back.
- Record audio in Voice Memos on iPhone, or the phone’s built-in recorder or Camera app on Android.
Apple recommends testing Voice Memos and making videos with both cameras when diagnosing microphone problems; see its microphone troubleshooting guidance. Interpret the results this way:

- Native Camera also fails: check device-wide privacy controls and restart the phone. If the problem remains, investigate an operating-system or device issue and contact Apple or the phone maker.
- Native video has sound but Snapchat is silent: focus on Snapchat’s Microphone permission, audio settings, or an app-specific fault.
- Only one camera fails in both apps: the problem may be limited to that camera or its software, rather than Snapchat generally.
Check storage if a clip stops or will not save
Check how much free space remains on the phone. If it is nearly full, move or delete large files, then reopen Snapchat and try again. A full device can interfere with writing video or destabilize apps. Clearing Snapchat’s cache may help with app state, but it is not a substitute for freeing substantial device storage when the phone itself is full.
If a recorded preview plays but the clip does not appear where expected, check Snapchat’s save destination and its access to the relevant photos or media. Snapchat’s Android permissions guidance explains its Camera and Microphone access, among other permissions.

Reinstall only after checking Memories backup
Reinstalling is a later step, not the first one. Consider it only after updating, restarting, checking permissions, clearing the cache, and confirming that the phone’s native camera and microphone work. Before logging out, switching phones, or uninstalling, verify that Memories are fully backed up. Snapchat warns that missing Memories may not be recoverable and advises checking backup status before these actions. Its camera and Memories help topic includes that warning. Do not assume an uninstall is risk-free for locally stored or unbacked-up material.
If nothing works, report the problem
In Snapchat, open Profile > gear icon > Support and Safety > Bugs and Suggestions > Report a Bug. Include details that can distinguish an app problem from a device problem:

- Phone model and iOS or Android version.
- Snapchat version, if visible.
- Whether the native Camera app and microphone work.
- Whether the front camera, rear camera, or both are affected.
- Whether the video is silent, fails to save, or fails only when sending.
- The exact error wording and when the issue began, including whether it followed an app or OS update.
Snapchat recommends reporting malfunctioning features through its in-app bug-reporting route in its app troubleshooting guidance. If the native Camera app or recorder fails too, contact Apple or your Android phone’s manufacturer or service provider. The information here does not establish whether Snapchat is experiencing a platform-wide outage; avoid treating an unverified outage as the explanation for a device-specific failure.
