Smile 2 makes a stronger case for itself when it turns its supernatural terror toward fame and public scrutiny. Naomi Scott gives the sequel a compelling center as pop star Skye Riley, and writer-director Parker Finn finds room for biting humor amid the horror. The film’s ending and 127-minute runtime, however, keep it from being an unqualified improvement on the original.
What is Smile 2 about?
Released in 2024, Smile 2 follows fictional global pop star Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) as she prepares for a world tour and begins experiencing frightening, inexplicable events connected to her past. Parker Finn returned as both writer and director. The premise places the supernatural horror inside the pressures of celebrity: Skye is not only confronting something terrifying, but doing so in a life where public attention is part of the job. Paramount’s film listing gives the movie an R rating and a 127-minute runtime.

Does the sequel improve on the original?
It improves on the first film in the distinctiveness of its central target, rather than by simply making everything bigger. Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy describes the original’s concern as generational trauma and says Finn’s focus here—fame—is a better tonal fit. That is a useful way to understand the sequel’s appeal: Skye’s celebrity makes public image, scrutiny and breakdown part of the horror’s dramatic framework.
That shift gives the story a fresh angle, but it does not establish that the sequel is objectively superior in every respect. The available critical case is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus, and a full scene-by-scene comparison would go beyond it. Kennedy’s review gives the film three stars out of four, praising its lead performance and satirical target while also faulting the ending and length. What works: Scott’s performance and Finn’s humor
Scott is the sequel’s strongest asset. Kennedy highlights her committed, emotionally varied performance, which gives the pop-star premise more than a glamorous surface. Skye’s public persona and private distress create a natural tension: the story’s horror is tied to what it means to be watched while struggling.
Finn also threads dark humor through the fear. Kennedy points to the awkwardness of celebrity apologies and grotesque comic set pieces as examples of the film’s satirical edge. The humor does not erase the threat; it makes the machinery of fame feel absurd and uncomfortable at the same time. That tonal mix helps the sequel feel like an expansion of the original’s approach rather than a repetition of its premise.

What holds it back: the ending and the length
The film’s strongest idea does not make every part of its execution equally effective. Kennedy says the script falters as it searches for an ending, and that the movie runs too long. At 127 minutes, it asks viewers to stay with a sustained stretch of horror; the runtime is an official listing, while the judgment that it feels overlong is Kennedy’s critical assessment.
Those reservations matter to the comparison. The fame satire and Scott’s performance give Smile 2 a persuasive reason to exist, but a less assured ending makes its overall shape feel less controlled than its central concept. Whether that trade-off outweighs the sequel’s strengths will depend on how much a viewer values its new thematic direction.

How scary is Smile 2?
It is an R-rated horror film with strong bloody violent content, grisly images, language throughout and drug use, according to the Associated Press review’s account of the rating reasons. Its horror is also built around Skye’s escalating distress and the unease of public exposure, not only graphic imagery. Viewers who want a gentler or less intense film should take the rating description into account.

Paramount’s listed physical formats include DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray. Paramount Germany also lists a limited 4K SteelBook and a two-film collection, so those editions are territory-specific rather than universal options. A U.S. home-video announcement describes extras such as Parker Finn commentary, cast and filmmaker material, a music-and-choreography feature, creature and makeup effects features, and deleted and extended scenes. Choose 4K UHD only if your display and player support it; standard Blu-ray and DVD are alternatives for compatible setups. See Paramount Germany’s format listing and the U.S. home-video announcement for edition details.
