Small Things Like These was the film Cillian Murphy made after Oppenheimer—but it is no longer an upcoming project. The 2024 drama adapts Claire Keegan’s novella, places Murphy in the role of Bill Furlong, and examines the history of Ireland’s Magdalene laundries through one man’s moral and emotional crisis.
What is Small Things Like These about?
Set at Christmas in 1985, the film follows Bill Furlong, a father and coal merchant in a small Irish town. While working, he encounters troubling secrets at a local convent. The story focuses not only on what Bill discovers, but on the pressure of deciding how to respond within a community shaped by silence and fear. Artists Equity’s official synopsis describes the film’s premise.
Is the film based on a book?
Yes. It adapts Claire Keegan’s 2021 novella Small Things Like These. The film’s screenplay is by Enda Walsh. Readers interested in the source can look for Claire Keegan’s novella; this link does not indicate current price or availability.
Who stars in and made the film?
Cillian Murphy plays Bill Furlong and also produced the film. Emily Watson stars, and Eileen Walsh plays Bill’s wife. Tim Mielants directed the movie, with a screenplay by Enda Walsh. Artists Equity credits Murphy, Alan Moloney, Matt Damon, and Drew Vinton as producers, and Ben Affleck, Kevin Halloran, and Michael Joe as executive producers. What history informs the story?
The film draws on the history of Ireland’s Magdalene laundries, institutions where women and girls were confined and made to work. The BFI reports that Ireland’s last Magdalene laundry closed in 1996, so the history was within living memory when the film was made. The drama is not simply a mystery about exposing institutional abuse: its central tension also concerns Bill’s psychological turmoil, intergenerational trauma, and the ways a community can repeat harmful patterns. The BFI’s interview and production feature discusses those themes.
Why did Cillian Murphy want to make it?
Murphy has described the story as deceptively simple and emotionally complex. In an Associated Press interview, he said it addresses “society and complicity and shame and guilt and secrecy and fear.” That focus helps explain why the film’s modest scale does not make its subject small: the story turns on an individual choice and the social pressures that can make silence seem easier. In a separate BFI interview, Murphy put the priority this way: “The scale of any project is secondary – it’s always about the quality of the writing.” The BFI interview also discusses the film’s production and adaptation.
Where was it filmed?
The production filmed in New Ross, County Wexford, the town where Keegan’s book is set. The crew used the town’s actual convent and a real house as the Furlong family home, grounding the fictional story in its setting. The location details are reported by the BFI.
