Producer Joseph Patel said Sly Stone was not interviewed for SLY LIVES! because health reasons prevented it. The filmmakers instead used archival interviews to bring Stone’s voice into the documentary and spoke with fellow artists about experiences that echoed its themes.
Why wasn’t Sly Stone interviewed for SLY LIVES!?
Patel gave the explanation in interviews about the film, saying the team could not interview Stone for health reasons. In a February 2025 interview with The Walt Disney Company, Patel said, “It would have been great to interview Sly Stone but, for health reasons, we weren’t able to.” He gave the same basic explanation to The Credits, saying the filmmakers “couldn’t interview him because of health concerns.”
Those are Patel’s statements, not a detailed medical account. The cited interviews do not establish a diagnosis or specify what health limitations prevented an interview. They also do not say Stone refused or was deliberately excluded.
How the film includes Stone’s voice and perspective
Archival interviews
After learning an interview would not be possible, the team searched for archival material. Patel told Disney, “Knowing we couldn’t interview him, we went to work searching for archival interviews and found some really illuminating ones.” These recordings let the documentary draw on Stone’s own words without presenting a new interview.

Other musicians’ experiences
The filmmakers also asked artists to discuss experiences they saw as relevant parallels to the pressures explored in the film. Patel described conversations with D’Angelo, Q-Tip and André 3000 to The Credits; Disney’s interview also names dream hampton and Chaka Khan. Their perspectives help illuminate the documentary’s themes, but they cannot speak for Stone’s private thoughts.
Performance and studio archives
The film also draws on historical performance and studio material. Patel told The Credits that Sony provided access to studio archives, while archival producers and private collectors helped locate concert footage. These sources contribute context and texture alongside the interviews.
