Small Things Like These is Claire Keegan’s short, Booker-shortlisted work of fiction about an ordinary Irish businessman who must decide whether to act after confronting cruelty connected to a local convent. Set in December 1985, the story uses Bill Furlong’s moral dilemma to examine the Magdalene institutions, Church-dominated social power, family responsibility, and the communal silence that allows abuse to persist. The 2024 adaptation, directed by Tim Mielants and starring Cillian Murphy, translates that quiet interior crisis into performance and image.

What is Small Things Like These about?

Small Things Like These is a short work of fiction by Irish writer Claire Keegan, published by Faber in 2021. Often described as a novella because of its compact length, it is also officially and widely called a novel. Set in an Irish town in December 1985, it follows Bill Furlong, a working-class coal and timber merchant whose ordinary Christmas-season routine brings him into contact with the local convent’s hidden treatment of unmarried mothers and babies.

The book’s central question is not simply whether Bill discovers wrongdoing. It is whether he will act after recognizing it. The convent is part of the town’s religious, social, and economic order, so challenging it threatens the respectability and security on which Bill’s family depends. Keegan turns a small act of practical help into a test of conscience—and into an indictment of the many forms of silence that allow cruelty to continue.

Synopsis: a moral crisis hidden inside an ordinary Christmas

Bill Furlong is a provider whose life is organized around work, family, and routine. As Christmas approaches, business at his coal and timber yard brings him to the local convent. There he encounters evidence that the women and girls connected to the institution are not being cared for in the charitable way the town’s public language suggests.

Bill’s discovery is especially unsettling because it cannot be dismissed as a distant scandal. He has to decide what to do with what he has seen. The town’s power structure encourages him to keep his head down: the convent is respected, the Church has enormous authority, and Bill’s livelihood and his daughters’ prospects are bound up with the community around him.

His own childhood and family history deepen the encounter. The institution’s treatment of vulnerable women and children resonates with what Bill knows about precarious beginnings and the way a community can decide who is respectable and who is not. His dilemma is therefore both social and personal: he must weigh his obligations as a husband and father against the immediate obligation to another human being.

Spoiler discussion: what Bill’s choice means

Spoilers for the book and film follow.

The story’s resolution is a moral intervention rather than a conventional mystery reveal or institutional takedown. Bill chooses not to return completely to the safety of routine. He offers practical help to a vulnerable person associated with the convent, accepting that compassion can carry social and economic consequences for him and his family.

That choice does not solve the wider system. It does something more limited and more demanding: it refuses to let the system turn an individual victim into an abstraction. Keegan’s point is not that one brave man can repair decades of institutional abuse. It is that institutions depend on a chain of ordinary decisions—looking away, repeating respectable explanations, protecting one’s position, and deciding that intervention is someone else’s responsibility.

The ending’s quietness is essential. There is no triumphant public speech and no guarantee that Bill will be rewarded. His action matters precisely because it is costly, uncertain, and small in comparison with the scale of the injustice.

Why the title matters

Small Things Like These points to the ethical importance of details that are easy to overlook: a person’s visible fear, a locked door, a neglected body, a question left unasked, or the decision to stop and help. The title does not minimize the underlying abuse. Instead, it asks how large systems are sustained—or resisted—through apparently minor choices.

The Booker Prize describes the book as a tale of compassion and quiet heroism while also emphasizing the community’s complicity. That combination is the key to reading the title. The “small things” are not sentimental gestures detached from politics; they are the practical acts through which a person either accepts or interrupts a culture of silence.

The major themes

1. Moral courage versus complicity

Bill is not presented as a professional investigator or a revolutionary. He is an ordinary tradesman who knows that the convent has social power and that the town has reasons to protect it. His moral courage develops through recognition: first noticing what others have normalized, then deciding that private disapproval is not enough.

Keegan is equally interested in everyone who does not act. Complicity here is broader than active cruelty. It includes conformity, fear of losing work or status, deference to religious authority, and the desire to preserve a comfortable story about one’s community. The book asks readers to consider whether “not knowing” is sometimes a form of self-protection rather than genuine ignorance.

2. Fatherhood and inherited vulnerability

Bill’s responsibilities as a father make the consequences of dissent tangible. He is not deciding only what kind of man he wants to be in private; he is deciding what risks his family may have to bear because of his conduct.

At the same time, fatherhood gives him a way to understand the vulnerability of children and young women who have been placed under institutional control. His family history prevents him from treating the convent’s residents as an anonymous social problem. The past he carries silently becomes part of the moral pressure of the present.

3. Religion, respectability, and silence

The book is a criticism of Church-dominated social power and of the community’s willingness to shield it. It is more precise, however, to say that Keegan examines the social conditions that permit cruelty to be committed in the name of religion than to reduce the novel to a simplistic attack on all religious belief.

The convent’s authority is reinforced by ordinary people and local institutions. Respectability becomes a kind of social currency: those who conform are protected, while unmarried mothers and other vulnerable women are treated as problems to be hidden, disciplined, or controlled. The resulting silence is communal, not merely institutional.

4. Christmas, winter, and the contrast between charity and harm

The December setting creates a sharp contrast between public Christmas rituals and the suffering hidden nearby. The town can celebrate generosity while refusing to acknowledge people who need more than seasonal goodwill. Snow, cold, darkness, coal, and domestic warmth all reinforce the difference between being sheltered and being confined.

Christmas also intensifies Bill’s choice. The season’s language of compassion makes the town’s indifference harder to excuse, while the pressure to maintain family celebration and social harmony gives him additional reasons to stay silent.

5. Compression and interiority

Keegan’s restrained prose gives the book a compressed emotional force. It spends less time explaining institutions in abstract terms than showing how Bill’s awareness changes as he moves through work, family life, memory, and the town’s social rituals. The Booker Prize reading guide reports that Keegan felt a longer novel would not suit Bill because he is not someone who says much. That formal decision is important: the book’s silences are part of its subject.

Historical context: the Magdalene laundries

The convent in the story is fictional, but the history it evokes is real. Ireland’s Magdalene laundries, also called Magdalene institutions, were institutions run primarily by religious orders where women and girls were confined and compelled to perform unpaid laundry or other work. Routes into the institutions varied, and the organizations did not all operate in precisely the same way.

Survivor testimony and archival research document restrictions on movement and unpaid labour. The Digital Repository of Ireland’s collection of survivor oral histories is particularly valuable because it preserves first-person accounts that should not be replaced by a purely institutional description.

The Irish government’s Report of the Inter-Departmental Committee to Establish the Facts of State Involvement with the Magdalen Laundries, published on 5 February 2013, includes material on the institutions’ history, routes of entry, State involvement, workplace regulation, finances, living and working conditions, and burial records. It is an essential primary source, but it is not the only source that should be consulted.

Later scholarship, including research associated with University College Dublin, has challenged aspects of official interpretations, including claims about the financial operation of particular laundries. A responsible account should therefore distinguish among government findings, survivor testimony, archival evidence, and subsequent historical reinterpretation. The novel uses this history as the moral and social ground of Bill’s story; it is not a comprehensive history of every Magdalene institution.

The subject is also modern history, not a remote episode. The last Magdalene laundry in Ireland ceased operating on 25 October 1996, and the Irish government issued an apology in 2013. Those dates help explain why the novel’s setting in 1985 remains uncomfortably close to the present.

How the 2024 film adaptation differs from the book

The film adaptation was directed by Tim Mielants and written by Enda Walsh. Cillian Murphy plays Bill Furlong and also served as a producer; Emily Watson and Eileen Walsh are among the other principal cast members. The film premiered as the opening film of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on 15 February 2024, as recorded in the Berlinale’s world-premieres materials.

It received a theatrical release in Ireland and the United Kingdom on 1 November 2024. For viewers elsewhere, availability depends on territory and changes as licensing agreements change. A U.S. availability listing has included Hulu, digital rental or purchase through services such as Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home, as well as DVD and Blu-ray listings; check the live JustWatch page for Small Things Like These before assuming that a service or edition is available in your country.

Comparison point Book Film
Bill’s inner life Presented through restrained narration, memory, and the gradual accumulation of moral unease. Externalized through Cillian Murphy’s performance, framing, sound, gesture, and physical space.
The convent Experienced through Bill’s perspective and the gaps between what the town says and what he sees. Made visible through production design, locations, bodies, distance, and the camera’s attention.
Historical explanation Leaves much of the wider history implicit, keeping the focus on one town and one conscience. Can use images and atmosphere to suggest institutional menace, but still does not function as a full historical account.
Emotional emphasis Compression and silence make the reader participate in Bill’s moral awakening. Performance and audiovisual detail make that awakening more immediately observable.

The useful question is not which version is simply better. The book’s power comes from interior restraint and the reader’s proximity to Bill’s thoughts. The film must make those thoughts visible without losing the source material’s delicacy. A productive comparison should focus on how each version handles Bill’s silence, the visual representation of the convent, the warmth of family life, and the menace of the institution.

The Booker Prize reading guide describes Murphy’s performance as nuanced and searing and notes the adaptation’s effort to preserve the novel’s delicacy despite its compact source. The film is therefore best approached as an interpretation of the book’s ethical problem, not as a documentary record of the laundries.

Is Small Things Like These a true story?

No. Bill Furlong, the town, and the central events are fictional. The historical system that gives the story its setting and moral force is real. Keegan combines a fictional personal narrative with documented history, which means the novel can illuminate the emotional logic of silence without standing in for survivor testimony, archival research, or a full account of the institutions.

That distinction matters. Readers should not use the novel to extract an exact victim count or assume that every Magdalene institution operated identically. Numbers and descriptions vary according to records, scope, and methodology, while the experiences of survivors were not uniform.

Reception and significance

Small Things Like These was shortlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize. The Booker Prize has noted that the 116-page edition was, at the time of its recognition, the shortest book ever shortlisted for the prize by page count. It was also shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize and won the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year Award and the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction. The Booker Prize’s 2022 shortlist announcement places the book’s recognition in that wider context.

Its significance is not merely that it brought the Magdalene laundries to new readers. It demonstrates how literary fiction can approach historical wrongdoing through a deliberately narrow lens. By staying close to one man and one community, Keegan shows how large systems are experienced as ordinary decisions: a delivery made, a door opened, a question avoided, or help offered despite the cost.
