Sky Q has been withdrawn from Sky’s main online sales route, but that is not the same as an announcement that existing boxes are about to stop working. In December 2025, Sky’s store began directing prospective customers away from Sky Q with the message “We’ve unplugged Sky Q. Plug in Sky Stream for less.” The move marks a significant commercial retreat; the available evidence does not establish a universal switch-off date for the satellite service.
For current customers, the practical question is whether to stay with a satellite box built around local recordings or move to Sky’s broadband-delivered alternatives. The answer depends especially on broadband reliability, recordings, multiroom needs and the terms of any new subscription.
What does “unplugged” mean?
It refers to Sky Q disappearing from the main online purchase journey, not to every Sky Q receiver being disconnected. Reporting in December 2025 described Sky’s online store directing new customers toward Sky Stream. That is evidence of a change in sales and promotion, not proof that Sky has ended service to its installed customer base. T3 reported on the store message; ISPreview covered the online sales change.

Sky also continues to publish Sky Q setup, recording and software support pages. These are signs that existing service is still supported, but they are not a promise that it will continue indefinitely. No verified universal shutdown date is established by the available information.

New customers may find Sky Q unavailable through Sky’s ordinary online route. Some reports have suggested that a phone or retail enquiry may still be possible, but any remaining availability can depend on stock, eligibility and Sky’s current sales policy. Check directly with Sky rather than relying on an old offer or comparison page.
Sky Q and Sky Stream: what changes?

Sky describes Stream as a puck for an existing television and Glass as a television with Sky’s streaming platform built in. Stream is therefore the more direct hardware alternative if you want to keep your current TV. Glass may make sense if you already need a new television, but it ties the display purchase more closely to Sky’s platform. See Sky Stream’s product details and Sky Glass.
The biggest switching cost: your recordings
Sky says recordings on Sky Q or Sky+ do not transfer to Sky Stream or Sky Glass. A Stream Playlist is not a copy of your recordings: it points to content that is available through the relevant service, and availability can differ from a programme you recorded and kept on your Q box. Watch any recordings you particularly value before migrating, and make a note of series links you will need to set up again.

Sky Store “Buy & Keep” purchases remain accessible through the Sky Store app on the streaming platform, but rentals stored on the Sky Q hard drive do not transfer. Check Sky’s migration information and its Sky Q recording guide before you agree to switch.
Broadband is not an optional extra on Stream
Sky recommends at least 25 Mbps for Sky Stream, 30 Mbps for an additional puck or UHD use, and 35 Mbps for UHD with Whole Home. Those figures are guidance, not a guarantee of smooth viewing in every home. Wi-Fi coverage at the TV, network congestion and other people using the connection all affect the result. Sky says Stream can connect by Wi-Fi or Ethernet; if possible, test the connection where the puck will sit, not only beside the router. Its current requirements are in the Stream FAQ.
With Sky Q, satellite-delivered live channels and local recordings can continue through some broadband failures; on-demand and other connected features may not. With Stream, an internet outage interrupts the delivery route itself. That makes satellite resilience a real reason to keep Q while it remains available, particularly where broadband is unstable or limited. Sky explains which Sky Q features work without broadband.

Check the contract and equipment before accepting a migration
Moving is not necessarily a like-for-like box swap. Sky says customers moving from Sky Q or Sky+ to streaming need to end the current Sky TV subscription and take Sky Ultimate TV; it also says there can be only one Sky TV subscription at an address. Existing minimum terms for add-ons may carry into new minimum terms. Sky’s Stream terms and migration details also say Q equipment may need to be returned within 60 days after the streaming cooling-off period ends.
Before agreeing, ask Sky for the full terms in writing:
- The complete monthly price, including channel packs, add-ons and extra pucks.
- The new minimum term and what happens to any remaining add-on commitments.
- Whether broadband and TV will be billed separately.
- Which Sky Q boxes and Mini boxes must be returned, by what date, and whether non-return charges apply.
- How multiroom will work and what each additional Stream puck costs.
- Whether third-party apps need fresh logins.
Stream pucks ordered in the UK after 23 February 2023 are loaned equipment, according to Sky, and must be returned when the service ends or is downgraded. Confirm how that applies to the equipment in your proposed package.

Who should stay with Sky Q for now?
There is no need to switch solely because the online store says Sky Q has been “unplugged.” If your service works and Sky has not given you a specific change notice, staying put is reasonable while you assess your options. Sky Q is especially useful if you rely on local recordings, have a large unwatched library, use Q Mini boxes, or live with unreliable broadband. It also avoids making broadband the route for live television.
Sky maintains a software-update page for Q. To check the version on your box, go to Home → Settings → System info. The page’s listed software builds can change, so treat them as a snapshot rather than permanent specifications: Sky Q software updates.

- Sky Stream: A reasonable fit if you want Sky on an existing TV, have reliable broadband and do not depend on keeping Q recordings. It avoids a dish and uses a compact puck, but the service depends on internet connectivity.
- Sky Glass: Consider it if a TV replacement is already on your list and you want the Sky platform built into the screen. It is not simply a replacement set-top box, and it is less suitable if you want to choose or replace your television separately.
- Independent streaming or free-to-air TV: If you mainly watch services such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Netflix or Prime Video and do not need Sky’s premium live channels, compare app subscriptions, Freeview or Freesat. These are not like-for-like replacements for Sky’s channel bundles, sports or recording setup. Freeview and Freesat explain their free-to-air options.
- NOW: An app-based route to selected Sky content may suit viewers who want particular passes rather than a full TV bundle. It does not reproduce Sky Q’s local recordings or full service. Check current availability, prices and terms directly at NOW.
Do not compare a headline “from” price with your existing bill as if the packages were equivalent. Include the channels you actually watch, extra-room costs, contract length, broadband and any equipment obligations.
A practical checklist before you switch
- Keep watching normally for now unless Sky has given you a specific service-change notice; “unplugged” online is not an individual shutdown notice.
- Review your recordings. Watch important programmes and note series links; Q recordings will not move to Stream or Glass.
- Test your broadband at the television. Check reliability as well as speed, especially if you plan to use multiple pucks or UHD.
- List your rooms and devices. Ask how existing Q Mini use would be replaced and what extra pucks cost.
- Get the new price and terms in writing. Confirm minimum term, add-ons, returns and possible charges before agreeing.
- Check purchases separately. Confirm access to Sky Store Buy & Keep titles and do not assume rentals or recordings migrate.
- Do not cancel Q first. Confirm the activation sequence and what happens to your service before ending the existing subscription.
Sky Q launched in 2015, and the online sales retreat roughly a decade later is a meaningful sign of Sky’s direction. But a product’s commercial phase-out and the shutdown of an installed service are different events. For now, the sound decision is based on your recordings, broadband and contract—not the “unplugged” slogan alone.
