Sky is moving its business towards internet-delivered television, but it has not announced an immediate nationwide shutdown of satellite TV. Sky Stream and Sky Glass are now the company’s strategic direction for new customers, while existing Sky Q households should not assume they must switch immediately.
The important distinction is between Sky reducing or ending new sales of Sky Q, and Sky switching off the satellite service for every existing customer. The first has been increasingly evident; the second has not been given a confirmed UK timetable in the available evidence.
The short version
- Sky’s future television strategy is centred on internet delivery rather than satellite.
- Sky Q has been progressively deprioritised for new sales. Secondary reports said it was no longer available online by late 2025.
- There is no verified universal date by which every existing Sky Q customer must migrate.
- Sky Stream and Sky Glass require reliable broadband, so they are not automatically better for every household.
- Sky Q customers should compare contract terms, recordings, live-TV performance, sports access and outage resilience before changing.
What changed in 2024?
In September 2024, T3 reported that some Sky Q bundles had disappeared from Sky’s website. Sky Stream was being presented more prominently as the alternative, while Sky Q was reportedly still available through other sales routes, including by phone, and existing customers continued to be supported.
That was evidence of a sales and merchandising change—not proof that Sky had switched off satellite broadcasting. “Not promoted online”, “not available to new customers” and “service discontinued” describe three different stages. Treating the first as the third risks misleading existing customers.

What happened after the original report?
By December 2025, TechRadar and What Hi-Fi? reported that Sky Q was no longer available to purchase online. That supports the broader conclusion that Sky Stream is replacing Sky Q as the principal route for new customers.
It still does not establish a fixed shutdown date for every existing Sky Q installation. Availability can also vary by sales channel, contract and market. The safest current description is that Sky is commercially phasing out satellite television for new sales while continuing to serve existing Sky Q households unless and until it gives them different instructions.

Sky’s own material describes Glass and Stream as part of a shift from satellite delivery to internet delivery. In a Sky and Warner Bros. Discovery announcement, Sky said that nine out of ten new customers were choosing Sky Glass or Sky Stream in the context of that announcement. That figure refers to new customers and should not be treated as the percentage of Sky’s entire customer base.

The shift is both technical and commercial. Internet delivery gives Sky a common platform across televisions, phones, tablets and smart TVs. It also makes it easier to update software, integrate third-party applications and present live channels, box sets and subscription services in one interface.

Streaming is particularly useful for Sky’s aggregation strategy. In February 2026, Sky announced plans to bring Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Hayu together within the Sky experience. That does not mean every service is included in every package, but it illustrates the direction: Sky increasingly wants to be the platform through which customers discover and manage television content, rather than simply a satellite channel distributor.
Internet delivery also avoids the need to install a dish, which matters to renters and households where exterior equipment is impractical or unwanted. It aligns television with Sky’s broadband and connectivity businesses. These advantages explain why Sky is steering new customers towards IP-based services even though satellite remains a mature and useful delivery system for many existing homes.
Is Sky Q being switched off?
Not on the evidence currently available as a confirmed nationwide UK event. There is strong evidence that Sky Q is being phased out commercially for new sales. There is not enough evidence to state that every existing Sky Q box has stopped working or that all customers have a mandatory migration date.
Sky’s 2025 corporate communications continued to refer to satellite customers and satellite operations. The absence of a publicly verified universal shutdown date matters: a change in the online purchase journey is not the same as a contractual termination notice.

Customers should also avoid using developments in other markets to infer the UK timetable. Sky New Zealand’s satellite arrangements and reported continuity through 2031 concern a separate business and market; they do not establish what Sky UK will do with Sky Q.
What the change means for existing Sky Q customers
If your Sky Q service is working and your contract remains active, there is no reason to cancel solely because Sky Q has become harder to find online. Instead, check the details of any proposed move carefully.
- Check your contract. Establish the remaining minimum term, current price and any scheduled price changes.
- Test your broadband. Streaming television depends on a stable connection, not merely a high advertised headline speed. Check performance in the room where the television is used, including during busy evening periods.
- Ask about saved programmes. Sky Stream’s playlists and cloud-based programme access should not be assumed to be equivalent to permanent recordings stored on a Sky Q hard drive.
- Compare the complete package. Confirm the channels, sports rights, premium services, multiroom options and third-party subscriptions included in the proposed deal.
- Ask whether migration creates a new contract. A replacement product may involve a fresh minimum term, different cancellation rights or a different equipment commitment.
- Keep the old equipment until the replacement works. Do not return a Sky Q box or cancel the existing service before the new setup has been installed and tested.
The broadband problem Sky Q owners should not overlook
Moving from satellite to streaming replaces one set of failure modes with another. Sky Q can be affected by dish alignment, heavy rain or equipment faults. Sky Stream and Sky Glass can be affected by broadband outages, Wi-Fi dead zones, congestion, router problems and faults at an external broadband provider.
A household may also experience more noticeable delay during live sport when moving from satellite to IP delivery. The exact experience depends on the service and network, but streaming should not be assumed to have identical latency or resilience to satellite.

Homes with poor fixed-line availability, strict data limits, unstable Wi-Fi or a broadband connection shared heavily by multiple users should investigate those issues before committing. A mobile hotspot may be an emergency workaround, but it may not be practical for extended television viewing and could consume a large data allowance.
What about live television and sport?
Moving to Stream or Glass does not mean giving up the concept of live television, but customers should verify the exact package and delivery method. Sky continues to hold major UK rights including Premier League, EFL, Formula 1 and tennis content, while channel line-ups and packaging can change.
Before switching, ask:
- Are the live channels you watch included?
- Are your sports packages available on the replacement service?
- Will live broadcasts have a noticeable delay compared with satellite?
- Are local, regional and public-service channels delivered in the same way?
- What happens if your broadband fails during a major event?
Do not rely on a general claim that Stream or Glass is identical to Sky Q. The relevant differences include channel delivery, latency, programme saving, outage behaviour and hardware.
Which option makes sense?
Stay with Sky Q if…
- Your satellite reception is dependable but broadband is not.
- You rely on local hard-drive recordings.
- Your existing package meets your needs and Sky has not issued a migration notice.
- You want to avoid taking a new minimum-term contract before the benefits are clear.
Choose Sky Stream if…
- You want Sky without installing or maintaining a satellite dish.
- You already own a suitable television.
- Your broadband and home Wi-Fi are reliable.
- You want the clearest expression of Sky’s internet-first direction without buying a new television.
Consider Sky Glass if…
- You are already replacing your television.
- You want Sky’s interface and television hardware integrated into one device.
- You accept less flexibility than a separate TV and streaming box.
Consider leaving Sky if…
You mainly want occasional access to selected Sky content, do not need the full channel line-up or prefer flexible subscriptions. Options include free-to-air television, Freesat where appropriate, individual streaming subscriptions, NOW, independent streaming hardware and another broadband provider. Compare the total cost, sports access, premium drama, live channels, recording, reliability and contract flexibility—not just the introductory price.

Sky’s wider strategy in 2026
The move away from satellite forms part of a wider repositioning. Sky is building around streaming television, broadband, mobile, business connectivity, smart-home services and aggregated third-party subscriptions.
On July 6, 2026, Sky agreed to acquire ITV Media & Entertainment for up to £1.6 billion, subject to customary conditions and regulatory approvals. The announced rationale placed the proposed combination around free-to-air broadcasting, advertising-funded streaming, subscription television, broadband and mobile services. It should be described as an agreed acquisition, not a completed merger.
Together with Sky’s announced integration of major streaming services, the proposed ITV transaction shows why satellite television is no longer the centre of Sky’s product story. Sky is trying to become a broader television and connectivity platform. That strategic direction is clear even though the timetable for existing UK Sky Q customers is not.

A genuine mandatory migration would normally require clearer evidence than a disappearing sales page. Customers should look for a direct Sky communication, updated contract or support notice that specifies affected equipment, timing, replacement terms, pricing and what happens to recordings.
Until then, headlines such as “Sky Q is finished” should be read narrowly. They may accurately describe the end of online availability for new purchases, but they do not automatically mean that an existing Sky Q household has lost service or must move immediately.
