Cambridge Dictionary added more than 6,000 words, phrases and meanings in 2025, including “skibidi,” “delulu,” “tradwife” and “broligarchy.” The additions record language in use; they do not mean every term is formal, universally understood or newly invented.
What do the new terms mean?
Skibidi
“Skibidi” is intentionally flexible: it can mean “cool” or “bad,” or be used as a joke without a specific meaning. The Associated Press reports that the term was coined by the creator of an animated YouTube series. Its dictionary entry does not reduce it to one stable synonym. Delulu
“Delulu” is a playful shortening of “delusional.” Cambridge defines it as believing things that are not real or true, usually because you choose to. Its recent visibility does not establish that social media invented it. CBS News, 18 August 2025; Associated Press, 18 August 2025
Tradwife
Short for “traditional wife,” “tradwife” describes a married woman, especially one who posts on social media, who stays home to do domestic work and care for children. CBS describes the trend as controversial and as embracing traditional gender roles. The label refers to a particular identity or trend, not to all married women. CBS News, 18 August 2025

Broligarchy
A blend of “bro” and “oligarchy,” “broligarchy” refers to a small group of men—especially men in technology businesses—who are extremely rich and powerful and have or want political influence. CBS reported the term being used for technology leaders attending the January 2025 presidential inauguration; that is an example of usage, not a definitive list of who the word describes. What the four words reveal about meaning and context
The terms do different jobs in conversation. “Skibidi” is unusually elastic and often functions as internet humor. “Delulu” has a more descriptive definition but keeps a playful register. “Tradwife” names a social-media-associated identity and a contested set of gender-role ideas. “Broligarchy” is political commentary, combining a slangy “bro” with a word for concentrated power.

They also show why a word’s visibility should not be confused with its beginning. A term may circulate in particular communities before it draws broader attention. As sociolinguist Christian Ilbury of the University of Edinburgh put it, “It’s really just the increase in visibility and potential uptake amongst communities who may not have engaged with those words before.” Associated Press, 18 August 2025
Why Cambridge added them
Cambridge said its 2025 additions included words, phrases and meanings, not only slang. CBS reported Cambridge’s precise total as 6,212 additions; the Associated Press described the total as more than 6,000. The scale matters: the headline-grabbing terms were part of a much broader update, rather than the whole list. The Associated Press reports that Cambridge monitors language using the Cambridge English Corpus, a database of more than 2 billion words of written and spoken English. Corpus evidence helps editors observe who uses a term, how often it appears and in what contexts. That evidence informs editorial judgment; the available account does not describe a single automatic threshold for adding an entry.
Colin McIntosh, Cambridge Dictionary’s lexical program manager, said: “We only add words where we think they’ll have staying power.” He also observed: “Internet culture is changing the English language and the effect is fascinating to observe and capture in the dictionary.” A dictionary entry is therefore a record of observed use and an editorial decision to document it—not a guarantee about a term’s future. What a dictionary addition does—and does not—tell you
Adding a word does not make it formal, familiar to every English speaker, or newly coined. It means the dictionary has chosen to describe a form or meaning it considers worth recording. As Ilbury explained, “If you look at what a dictionary’s function is, it’s a public record of how people use language and so if people are now using words like ‘skibidi’ or ‘delulu,’ then the dictionary should take account of that.” Associated Press, 18 August 2025
The practical takeaway is to read each entry in context. A flexible joke word, a playful shortening, a social identity label and a political portmanteau carry different implications; dictionary inclusion documents those uses without making them interchangeable or universally accepted.
