A child’s drawings become real monsters in Sketch, a family fantasy-adventure about grief, art, and repairing a fractured family. The film is often listed as Sketch (2024) because it premiered on the festival circuit in 2024. What is Sketch about?
When Amber Wyatt’s sketchbook falls into a strange pond, the creatures she has drawn escape into the real world. What begins as a child’s imaginative artwork becomes a chaotic monster hunt, forcing Amber and her brother Jack to track down the drawings before they cause more damage.
Their father, Taylor Wyatt, is also trying to bring the family back together. The monsters are not random threats: they are closely tied to Amber’s emotional state and the grief the family has struggled to confront. As the adventure unfolds, the creature chase becomes a story about communication, loss, and learning how to face difficult feelings instead of leaving them unspoken.

That premise makes Sketch more than a standard “drawings come to life” fantasy. The supernatural danger gives the film a visual way to show what grief can feel like to a child—large, frightening, unpredictable, and impossible to keep contained.
Why the film is called Sketch (2024) when it was released in 2025
The year attached to the title depends on which stage of the film’s release history a source is describing:
- 2024: Sketch premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and circulated through the festival circuit.
- 2025: Angel released the film theatrically in the United States and Canada beginning August 6, followed by premium home-entertainment availability on August 26.
For that reason, both “Sketch (2024)” and “SKETCH (2025)” can refer to the same Seth Worley film. The 2024 label describes its festival-era identity; 2025 describes its broad commercial release.
Cast, director, and production
Sketch was written and directed by Seth Worley, who also edited the film. It is his feature directorial debut. The project developed from an earlier short-film concept identified in film coverage as Darker Colors.

Is Sketch a horror movie?
Not in the conventional sense. Angel classifies the film as adventure, comedy, and fantasy, rather than horror. It does use scary creature imagery, intense action, and monster-movie tension, but the overall framework is a family adventure with humor, wonder, and an emotional coming-of-age story.
Parents should not interpret “family film” as “entirely gentle.” The official guidance lists scary action, some violence, thematic elements, language, and rude humor. The Angel Guild recommends the movie for viewers aged 10 and up, particularly because of the chalk-and-crayon creatures, intense scenes, music, and mild language.
Rating, runtime, and age guidance
- Rating: PG
- Content descriptors: scary action, some violence, thematic elements, language, and rude humor
- Recommended age: Angel Guild guidance suggests 10 and older
- Runtime: approximately 92–94 minutes, depending on the listing
The most important issue for families is the film’s tone. Younger children who are comfortable with animated or fantasy monsters may enjoy it, while children sensitive to creatures, family conflict, or grief-related stories may find some scenes intense. A PG rating does not rule out anxiety-provoking imagery.

The monsters provide the visible action, but grief provides the story’s emotional engine. Amber’s drawings turn an internal experience into something the whole family can see and confront. Her feelings are not presented as a simple problem to eliminate; they are part of a loss the family must learn to acknowledge.
Drawing becomes a language
Children do not always have the vocabulary or confidence to explain complicated emotions. In Sketch, drawing works as an alternative language. Amber’s artwork communicates what she cannot easily say, even though the magical pond transforms that outlet into a physical danger.

That creates the film’s central tension: art is both an expression of pain and a possible route toward understanding. The family cannot simply destroy the drawings and move on. They have to understand what the creatures represent and why Amber created them.
The monster chase becomes family repair
Taylor, Amber, and Jack must cooperate to deal with the creatures, but the practical mission also pushes them toward emotional honesty. The adventure gives the family a shared task at the moment when grief has been separating them. Their attempt to regain control of the sketchbook’s creatures becomes an attempt to reconnect with one another.
Childlike imagery with monster-movie mechanics
The film’s visual idea is especially effective because it combines the rough, playful look of a child’s drawing with the physical rules of a creature feature. Chalk, crayon, and sketchbook imagery suggest imagination, while the monsters bring chase scenes and real consequences. This contrast lets Sketch move between comedy, wonder, fear, and sadness without becoming a straight horror story.
The film’s creative identity
Critics generally responded positively to the combination of visual invention and emotional subject matter. Release-era Rotten Tomatoes snapshots were highly favorable, although the displayed Tomatometer figure changed between official pages and should not be treated as a permanent score. The more durable critical conclusion is that reviewers praised the imaginative effects, family-adventure structure, and treatment of grief, while some noted limitations in tone or characterization.
The most useful comparison is to an Amblin- or Spielberg-influenced family adventure: an ordinary child encounters an extraordinary threat, and the supernatural premise becomes a way to explore family relationships. That is a comparison of tone and storytelling tradition—not a claim that Steven Spielberg produced, directed, or officially adapted the film.

Worley’s independent-film background is also significant. Sketch began with a short-film idea, expanded into a feature, premiered at TIFF, and then reached a wider audience through Angel’s distribution network. The result is a film with the scale and accessibility of a family fantasy while retaining the personal quality of a filmmaker’s first feature.

- Who could help it?
- What would happen if it had to explain itself?
These are ordinary creative supplies, not official Sketch products or licensed tie-ins. Use washable materials if the activity is likely to leave the paper.
Angel also lists an official SKETCH Monster Maker app. Its App Store description says that users can turn hand-drawn monsters into animated 3D creatures. It is a digital companion experience, not a claim that the film includes a physical monster-making kit.
What viewers should know before watching
- It is fantasy adventure, not straight horror. Expect monsters and tense scenes, but also comedy and family-focused storytelling.
- Grief is central. The emotional material is not incidental to the creature plot.
- The film is aimed more at older children. Angel’s 10+ guidance is more informative than the PG label alone.
- The runtime is short enough for a family movie night. Plan for roughly an hour and a half, allowing for differences among listings.
- Release-year labels vary. Festival coverage may say 2024, while commercial-release listings say 2025.
- Streaming access may differ by location. Confirm the current storefront or Angel Guild availability in your territory.
Final verdict
Sketch uses a high-concept fantasy hook to tell a grounded story about what happens when a family avoids talking about loss. Its most distinctive idea is not merely that drawings become monsters, but that the creatures make private grief impossible to ignore. The result is a visually inventive, emotionally direct family adventure that should appeal to viewers who like imaginative creature stories with a serious heart.

Why is the movie listed as both Sketch (2024) and SKETCH (2025)?
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, which explains the title Sketch (2024). Angel’s theatrical release began in the United States and Canada on August 6, 2025, so commercial listings may call it SKETCH (2025).
