Before Garrison Brown died in March 2024, he and his father, Kody Brown, were estranged. On Sister Wives, the family linked the rupture to conflict over Kody’s COVID-era rules and to a breakdown in communication. Janelle Brown said there had been no reconciliation. The phrase “wouldn’t engage” is not verified in the available reporting as a direct quotation, so it should not be treated as something Garrison said.
Why were Garrison and Kody estranged?
The public account centers on disagreements over Kody’s COVID-era family rules and what followed when his sons challenged them. In coverage of season 18, Us Weekly reported that the rift involving Kody and his sons Garrison and Gabriel deepened after Kody demanded apologies if they wanted a relationship with him.

Gabriel described the communication breakdown on the show: “Me and Garrison are at odds with my dad, because when we expressed our discontent at how things were going with COVID, I was met with just a wall.” He added, “There was no line of dialogue. I think that that is what really drove the wedge between us.” Those comments describe Gabriel’s experience and the brothers’ conflict with Kody; they do not provide a complete record of every private conversation or every reason for the estrangement.
What did Janelle say about reconciliation?
Janelle said she was worried about her sons’ mental health amid the family conflict. In December 2023, she said on the show that Kody had not reconciled with the boys, according to Us Weekly’s account. That is the clearest public answer to whether father and sons had made peace before Garrison died: Janelle said they had not.

How the public timeline unfolded
- COVID-era dispute: The disagreements over Kody’s rules and his sons’ objections became part of the family’s season 18 story. The show was filmed in early 2022, according to Us Weekly.
- Broader family changes: The Los Angeles Times reported that Christine left Kody in 2021 and Janelle and Kody announced their separation in December 2022. These events provide context for the family’s difficulties, but do not establish the cause of the father-son rift.
- December 2023: Janelle said there had been no reconciliation between Kody and the sons.
- March 5, 2024: Garrison died at age 25, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing Flagstaff Police Department information.
- September 2024: Kody spoke publicly about wishing he had spent more time talking with and seeing Garrison.
What Kody said after Garrison’s death
In a September 2024 interview, Kody reflected that he and Garrison could have communicated more. “We could have been talking more. I’d get texts, stuff like that, and we could have, retrospectively, we could have done so much more,” he said. He also recalled thinking, “We’ve got forever,” Us Weekly reported.
Those remarks were retrospective expressions of regret, not evidence of a reconciliation before Garrison died. They show what Kody said afterward about missed opportunities to connect; they cannot establish what either father or son privately felt or what might have happened had they spoken more.

What is—and is not—known about Garrison’s death
The Los Angeles Times reported that Garrison died on March 5, 2024, at 25, citing police information. His parents’ joint statement said, “He was a bright spot in the lives of all who knew him,” and asked for privacy, according to the newspaper’s report.
The public accounts describe family conflict and an estrangement, but they do not establish that either caused Garrison’s death. The Sister Wives footage and family interviews offer glimpses into relationships, not a complete account of private life. A May 2025 episode report later covered family members’ on-camera accounts of learning of his death; those accounts likewise should be understood as personal recollections rather than a full explanation of the family’s history.
