At Seattle’s Black Tech Night on Aug. 8, 2024, Sir Mix-A-Lot joined by video from his home studio for a wide-ranging conversation about electronic music, entrepreneurship, creative tools and artificial intelligence. The appearance was remote because of a scheduling mix-up, but the setting made the discussion unusually revealing: the Seattle rap legend appeared among gold and platinum records, studio equipment and a workshop where he refurbishes musical gear and builds custom amplifiers.
His message was not anti-technology. Sir Mix-A-Lot—identified in the event coverage as Anthony Ray—described technology as one of the reasons he entered music. His caution was directed at what powerful systems can enable, and at the people and institutions that control them.
A Seattle hip-hop conversation with a technology core
The event took place Thursday evening, Aug. 8, 2024, at the newly opened M5 Creative Building at Seattle Center. Professional MC, Microsoft veteran and Hey, Black Seattle! founder Kiesha Garrison moderated the informal conversation.

Sir Mix-A-Lot had been expected to attend in person. Instead, he appeared on a video call, turning the scheduling problem into an impromptu tour of his creative space. He showed attendees keyboards and other studio devices, his awards—including the 1993 Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance for “Baby Got Back”—and the workshop where he works on equipment. A brief glimpse of a Porsche and Lamborghini in his garage prompted a joke about MTV’s Cribs.

Those details supplied humor and celebrity color, but the substance of the evening was broader. Black Tech Night is an ongoing Seattle series intended to bring together members of the city’s Black technology community and allies. An earlier February gathering featured a panel on Black representation and experiences in the technology industry. The Sir Mix-A-Lot conversation extended that community-building work into music, creative business and the future of AI.
Why Sir Mix-A-Lot was more than a celebrity guest
Sir Mix-A-Lot’s relationship with technology began long before the current generative-AI boom. He said he was drawn to music partly because of the technology behind it, citing Kraftwerk and his desire to understand drum machines and synthesizers.
He described fixing equipment he could not afford to purchase, refurbishing musical gear and building custom amplifiers. The account presents him as a hands-on technology enthusiast: someone interested not only in using tools, but in opening them up, repairing them and understanding how they shape the creative process. The available event report does not establish formal engineering credentials, so “tinkerer” or “music-technology enthusiast” is more accurate than presenting him as an engineer.

That history gives his AI comments a useful tension. He is not objecting to new tools from outside the technological tradition. Electronic instruments helped form his musical identity. His concern is what happens when increasingly powerful systems are deployed without adequate safeguards or accountability.
What he said about artificial intelligence
Sir Mix-A-Lot said AI was among the things that scared him, but his position was more specific than a blanket rejection of artificial intelligence.
- Creative assistance: He was not primarily worried about AI helping with lyrics, sound production or other creative tasks.
- Voice manipulation and fraud: He warned about manipulated voice technology being used to impersonate someone and potentially empty that person’s bank account. This was presented as a risk, not as a claim that such an incident had occurred at the event.
- Weapons: He raised the prospect of AI-controlled or AI-enabled weapons and the catastrophic consequences of malicious use.
- Concentrated power: His broader concern involved the executives, companies and wealthy individuals controlling powerful technologies—not simply machines acting on their own.
The conversation was not a detailed policy proposal. It did not establish a comprehensive position on copyright, artist compensation, deepfakes, regulation or music-industry labor. What it did offer was a plainly expressed distinction between technology used as a creative instrument and technology used to manipulate, defraud or cause harm.

From selling tapes to building a career
The entrepreneurial discussion connected music technology to persistence. Sir Mix-A-Lot recalled growing up in Seattle projects and selling tapes out of a window. He said his early motivation was not simply money; he wanted to prove himself.

In his framing, satisfaction can become stagnation. The lesson was not a formal business system, but an encouragement to keep experimenting, improving and looking for the next challenge.
That outlook is visible in the way he described his studio and workshop. The equipment is not merely a display of success. It represents an ongoing practice of making, modifying and learning—one that links the resourcefulness of early independent music entrepreneurship with the hands-on culture of hardware experimentation.

Why M5 Creative mattered as the backdrop
The venue added a second layer to the event. M5 Creative opened in June 2024 in the former Cascade PBS building at Mercer Street and Fifth Avenue. The report described the facility as approximately 40,000 square feet for businesses and creators working in film and television production, audio, technology, gaming and related fields.
James Miles, identified as Seattle’s creative economy manager, described M5 as a creative hub intended to provide lower-cost leases to creators across disciplines, while encouraging collaboration, community growth and business development.
That description places Black Tech Night within Seattle’s wider creative economy rather than treating the evening as a one-off celebrity interview. The venue was designed around the same overlap explored in the conversation: technology, media production, entrepreneurship and community. Because these details come from reporting on the 2024 opening, they should not be read as a current assessment of M5 Creative’s tenants, footprint, programming or operating status in 2026.

A longer history of technology experiments
The Black Tech Night discussion also fit a pattern in Sir Mix-A-Lot’s earlier technology work. In 2016, he worked with Amazon engineers on possible uses of the Alexa voice service with music-studio equipment. In 2011, he partnered with Seattle startup Giant Thinkwell on Mix-N-Match, a social-media game.
Neither example should be treated as evidence of a current Amazon relationship or an active product. Their relevance is historical: they show that his interest in connecting music, interactive technology and audiences predates the latest wave of generative AI.
The larger takeaway: tools are never the whole story
Sir Mix-A-Lot’s appearance brought together two ideas that are often separated. Artists can be enthusiastic early adopters of technology while remaining deeply skeptical of the institutions that deploy it.

For him, a drum machine or synthesizer can expand what a musician is able to make. A repaired amplifier can embody independence and technical curiosity. But a manipulated voice can threaten financial security, and an AI-enabled weapon can turn automation into mass harm. The difference is not whether technology is present; it is how it is designed, controlled and used.
That made the 2024 Black Tech Night conversation significant beyond its entertaining studio tour. It offered a Seattle-specific view of the creative-tech economy: one rooted in Black community, local entrepreneurship and a musician whose career was shaped by electronic tools. Sir Mix-A-Lot’s warning was not to stop innovating. It was to remain alert to who benefits from innovation—and who bears the risk when powerful technology is misused.
