Why was Chaka Khan being honored?
Khan entered the Rock Hall in 2023 in the Musical Excellence category. Jazmine Sullivan inducted her, describing Khan’s voice as “as raw as it is sweet, as sensual as it is soulful” and saying it had guided listeners “through good times, through desire and despair.” The Hall’s inductee account documents the category and Sullivan’s role.

The honor recognized a career whose sound moved through early-1970s funk with Rufus, late-1970s disco, and 1980s jazz and chart-topping pop. “I’m Every Woman,” performed with Sia at the ceremony, appears on Khan’s 1978 album Chaka.
Khan acknowledged Rufus guitarist Tony Maiden
During her remarks, Khan called up Tony Maiden, a guitarist from Rufus, and credited the band’s part in her journey. The Associated Press reported her saying, “Without him and the band, I would not be here today.” The moment connected the solo honor to the group years that helped establish her musical career.
