What is Shrek 5 about?
NBCUniversal describes the movie as a “thrilling, magical new comedy adventure,” but its announcement does not provide a detailed plot synopsis. That confirms the broad tone and a return to the franchise, not the film’s central conflict. Until the studio releases more story details, claims about specific events or characters’ roles beyond the announced cast should be treated as speculation.
Where can you watch the earlier Shrek movies?
NBCUniversal reported in June 2026 that Peacock offered the four main Shrek films—Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After—along with three seasons of The Adventures of Puss in Boots and DreamWorks animated shorts featuring Shrek characters. That is a dated catalog snapshot, not a guarantee of current availability. Check Peacock’s listings in your country before subscribing or planning a rewatch.

How large is the Shrek franchise?
NBCUniversal said in June 2026 that the four Shrek films and two Puss in Boots spin-offs had grossed nearly $4 billion worldwide. Licensing International reported in May 2026 that the four Shrek films alone had earned more than $2.9 billion worldwide. These figures cover different sets of films and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Licensing International also reported that the Broadway musical received eight Tony nominations and 12 Drama Desk nominations. Those honors reflect the franchise’s stage adaptation, not the upcoming film.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the Shrek story based on?
The film franchise is based on William Steig’s book Shrek!. The book is a companion read for anyone curious about the source story, not a Shrek 5 tie-in edition.
