Showrunner is an early-stage AI entertainment platform from Fable—not a replacement for Netflix. Its pitch combines a catalog of animated, AI-generated programs with tools for making scenes or episodes from text prompts, and in some cases inserting yourself into the story. Fable CEO Edward Saatchi has called it the “Netflix of AI,” but that phrase describes the ambition rather than Netflix-level scale, quality or availability.
Launch coverage in 2025 described an alpha product, with some access routed through Discord. Because current public access, pricing, catalog and geographic availability could not be independently confirmed from the available evidence, treat those details as historical unless you verify them at Showrunner’s official site.
What Showrunner is supposed to be
Showrunner sits between an AI video generator, an interactive story engine, a user-generated-content platform and a streaming catalog. The intended experience is:
- Choose an existing Showrunner story world or begin with an original idea.
- Describe a scene, character action or episode in natural language.
- Let the system generate animated visuals, dialogue, voices, camera shots and editing.
- Watch the result, revise it and potentially share or extend it.
Fable has also promoted the ability to upload a selfie or otherwise place yourself and friends into a generated scene. That makes the concept closer to “playable television” than passive streaming. According to TheWrap’s launch report, episodes were described as running up to 22 minutes. “Up to” is important: it is not a promise that every prompt produces a 22-minute episode, that generation is fast, or that the story remains consistent for the entire runtime.
What can you watch?
The launch title most often cited was Exit Valley, an animated satire set in the fictional “Sim Francisco,” with fictionalized versions of technology figures including Elon Musk and Sam Altman. Forbes and TheWrap covered it as an example of Fable’s own programming. Earlier reports also mentioned Everything is Fine, involving a married couple and an alternate dimension; whether that title remains available requires checking the current service.
The catalog should be understood as a showcase and test of the format, not evidence of a large, stable library comparable with Netflix. The product’s center of gravity may also shift between watching, generating and participating as the platform develops.

How the technology is described
Fable says Showrunner is built on its proprietary SHOW-2 model, following SHOW-1, which powered earlier experiments with AI-generated South Park-style material. Launch coverage attributed a broad production stack to the system: story and episode development, character behavior, dialogue, voice generation, shot selection, animation, editing and continuity.
Those are company or launch-report descriptions, not independent benchmarks. The initial animation-first strategy was also deliberate. Animated characters generally require less compute and fewer real-world consistency details than photorealistic actors, while allowing Fable to avoid directly competing with companies focused on realistic text-to-video.
The gap between “generate a show” and good television
Continuity is still an open question
Earlier reporting said characters could reset between episodes, while later claims emphasized consistency between scenes and episodes. The safest conclusion is that continuity is an evolving capability, not a solved problem. A character that looks and sounds right in one shot can still change appearance, motivation or voice in the next.
Unrestricted prompting can produce weak stories
Fable has acknowledged that fully bottom-up user storytelling can become incoherent or mediocre. Its proposed solution is a hybrid: professionally structured “canonical” worlds that users can remix. That approach limits some creative freedom, but it may produce more understandable results than asking a model to invent an entire serialized universe from scratch.

It began with animation, not live action
Readers should not assume Showrunner can make convincing live-action drama, feature films or effects-heavy cinema. Its strongest near-term applications are likely short-form comedy, playful remixes, prototypes and participation in fictional worlds.
Human creative work has not disappeared
Prompting can automate parts of writing, storyboarding, voice work and editing, but directing, pacing, quality control and rights review remain necessary if the result is meant to function as television rather than a novelty clip.
Can you put yourself in an episode?
That is one of Showrunner’s most distinctive promises. A selfie or other likeness could be used to create a character who appears in a scene. But “appearing as a generated character” is not the same as controlling every action, owning the episode or granting unlimited permission to use your face and voice.

Fable’s earlier South Park experiments reportedly attracted more than 80 million views, according to company-reported figures, but were made without participation or permission from the original rights holders. That history does not mean Showrunner currently lets users generate unauthorized episodes of major franchises.
The later product pitch focused on Fable-owned or controlled story worlds, with possible future licensing deals. Reports discussed hypothetical partnerships with studios, including Disney-style arrangements, but no evidence here establishes that Star Wars, Disney properties, South Park or other major franchises were licensed for Showrunner users.
Ownership is equally unsettled. TheWrap reported Saatchi saying that the model provider would own material created inside a story world it owns. That is a significant statement, not a universal legal rule. Before creating anything commercially important, find out:
- Who owns an episode based on your original idea?
- Who owns work made inside Fable’s world?
- Can you export, monetize or license the result?
- Can Fable reuse, moderate, distribute or train on your output?
- What permissions cover uploaded faces and voices?
- Do creators receive payment when others remix their work?
Forbes reported that Fable intended to share revenue with creators whose intellectual property others used. Unless current terms confirm an operating program, treat that as a proposed business model.
Why Amazon’s investment matters—and what it does not mean
Amazon’s Alexa Fund invested in Fable; the amount was not disclosed. That gives Showrunner additional strategic and financial credibility, but it does not mean Amazon owns or operates the service, that Prime Video distributes it, or that a Prime Video integration exists. Venture backing is evidence of interest, not proof of product quality or mass-market adoption.
Access and price
At launch, Showrunner was described as live in alpha, with access through its website and Discord. Current signup requirements, country restrictions, account rules and catalog status were not verifiable from the supplied evidence. Check the official destination immediately before relying on any access claim.
Earlier reporting described an initial free phase and a planned creator tier of roughly $10–$20 per month for generation credits. That is historical guidance, not confirmed 2026 pricing. A credit model also means “hundreds of scenes” is not the same as hundreds of finished episodes: revisions, longer scenes and repeated failed generations can consume credits.
Is it a streaming service, a tool or a game?
It is best understood as a hybrid. Netflix supplies a finished catalog; a conventional video generator supplies production tools. Showrunner tries to join both with persistent worlds, public viewing and fan participation. The experience may therefore feel less like choosing a completed program and more like entering a story engine that can produce an episode for you.

When comparing services, check persistent characters, multi-scene continuity, voices and audio, editing, episode length, export options, training and commercial rights, public discovery, likeness controls and the cost of failed generations. Do not assume one is “better” without current, like-for-like testing.
What would make Showrunner a mainstream product?
It would need dependable character and narrative continuity, transparent rights and privacy rules, predictable generation costs, strong moderation, a compelling catalog and a reason to watch other people’s creations.
