24/7 streaming

Should a YouTube 24/7 Stream Use CBR or VBR Encoding?

YouTube specifies CBR for live encoder settings; its VBR advice is for uploads. Here’s how to choose a live bitrate and plan stable upload capacity for 24/7 streaming.

Use CBR (constant bitrate) for a YouTube Live stream, including a 24/7 stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings specify CBR; its VBR recommendation applies to uploaded videos, a different workflow. For continuous streaming, the key is to keep the encoder and network stable and provide enough upload capacity for the stream.

CBR or VBR: which should you choose for YouTube Live?

Choose CBR in your live encoder. YouTube’s official live settings list “Bitrate encoding: CBR” and recommend video bitrates according to codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate-mode exception for 24/7 streams, so its general live guidance is the relevant basis for a continuous broadcast.

Mode How the bitrate behaves YouTube’s guidance
CBR Aims to keep the encoded stream near its configured bitrate target. Specified for live encoder settings.
VBR Allows bitrate to vary with the complexity of the video. Recommended for uploads, not as the stated live encoder setting.

VBR appearing in YouTube’s upload guidance does not override the setting for a live ingest. Choose the workflow first: a file uploaded to YouTube is not the same as a live encoder sending a continuous stream.

Choose a live bitrate for your resolution, frame rate, and codec

CBR tells you which mode to select; it does not mean every stream should use one universal bitrate. YouTube publishes different recommended video bitrates for H.264 and AV1/H.265. The figures below are live-ingestion recommendations, not upload settings. They are from YouTube’s live encoder guidance accessed in 2026; the help page does not state a publication date.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ingest format AV1/H.265 recommended video bitrate H.264 recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

YouTube also gives minimums. At 1080p30, the minimum is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264; at 1080p60, it is 4 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively. These are minimums, not the recommended targets. For other formats, use YouTube’s full live encoder settings and bitrate table rather than extrapolating from these examples.

Set the encoder’s CBR target to the applicable recommended video bitrate, then account for audio and any additional stream overhead in your overall bandwidth plan. Do not raise resolution or frame rate beyond what the source video and stable connection can support.

Plan upload bandwidth for a continuous stream

YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For a setup with both a primary and backup stream, its guidance is to plan for primary plus backup plus 20%—not just the primary stream’s target. Check outbound upload capacity; a fast download result does not establish that your upload can sustain the stream.

For example, if your primary stream and backup each send video at 10 Mbps, the combined stream bitrate is 20 Mbps; with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, plan for at least 24 Mbps of reliable upload capacity, before allowing for any other traffic or overhead. This is an illustration of the formula, not a YouTube-specific bitrate recommendation for a particular channel.

Configure and preflight a 24/7 stream

  1. Choose the ingest format. Decide on resolution, frame rate, and codec based on the source and YouTube’s live settings table. Select CBR and use the recommended bitrate for that format.
  2. Check network capacity. Measure reliable outbound upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the combined primary and backup stream bitrate, if you use a backup.
  3. Test representative material. Before starting the continuous broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. A static image alone may not reveal problems that appear in the intended content.
  4. Check YouTube’s ingest. Review stream health messages and the Live Control Room preview to confirm YouTube is receiving the stream as expected.
  5. Verify local recording and failover. If your setup records an archive locally, confirm the file is intact and continues to grow. If you use a backup encoder, deliberately test failover rather than assuming it will work.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live. Its HLS guidance presents HLS as an option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP and notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. Those protocol differences do not establish a VBR exception: YouTube’s general live encoder settings still specify CBR. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, Streaming tips, and its HLS ingestion guidance.

Common problems and what to check

  • You see VBR in YouTube’s recommended settings. Confirm that you are reading the upload guidance, not the live encoder settings. Use CBR for live ingestion.
  • The stream buffers or loses health. Check sustained outbound capacity against the full bitrate, including any backup stream, and confirm the recommended headroom remains available. Look at YouTube’s stream health messages and the encoder preview.
  • The encoder cannot hold the selected target. Verify the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate against the target bitrate and available encoder capacity. If the combination is unstable, use a format the system can sustain rather than relying on unused download speed.
  • A backup encoder is configured but may not take over. Test failover intentionally before relying on it for continuous operation; include both streams in the upload-capacity calculation.
  • A protocol or codec choice raises questions about bitrate mode. Use the settings applicable to the chosen ingest format, but do not infer that HLS or another protocol changes YouTube’s stated CBR guidance.
